Obituary Helene Scholes Moore of Laughlintown, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2023, at Brookdale Care Home in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Born in Indiana, PA, on May 14, 1936, Helene's legacy is one of love, accomplishment, and a profound connection to the pursuits she held dear. She graduated from Indiana High School in 1954 and earned a bachelor of science from Pennsylvania State University in 1959 with a certificate in medical technology. At Penn State, she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Helene worked for several years as a medical technologist and in a lab at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh before focusing on raising her two sons. She also had a great love for literature. She did graduate work in literature at the University of Pittsburgh, where she developed a lifelong love of the novels of Jane Austin. On August 18, 1961, she married Richard (Dick) William Moore. They were married for 44 years until his death in April 2006. Helene is survived by her two sons, David and Brian (Renee), and three cherished grandchildren, Sydney, Ronan, and Eamon. A woman of many passions, in the 1970s, Helene began an interest in the art of nature printing. She became an active member of the Nature Printing Society, serving as Secretary and Newsletter Editor for several years. Several of her nature prints were featured in a Smithsonian Museum traveling exhibition on the art that toured the country. Helene's love for Weimaraners led her into the world of dog breeding when she founded the kennel Sirius Weimaraners. She took great pride in the remarkable success of her dogs in obedience, companion, field, hunting, natural ability, and retrieving competitions. Notably, one of her dogs was inducted into the WCA Hall of Fame, and another won the Weimaraner National Field Trial Championship. Helene's passion for her dogs expanded when she joined the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA), where she was one of the very first female judges in Pennsylvania. Other Weimaraner breeders acknowledge her as restoring the breed of Weimaraner as a prominent hunting dog. In Pittsburgh, she and Dick formed a bond with fellow members of the 3rd Presbyterian Church. This bond of friendship lasted Helene's entire life and continues today through her surviving friends and their children. Dick, Helene, and their friends moved to the 6th Presbyterian Church, where Helene served as a Deacon for several years. Upon moving to Laughlintown, PA, she and Dick joined St. Michaels of the Valley Episcopal Church in Rector, PA. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Helene's passions: the Nature Printing Society, NAVHDA, or a charity of your choice. Read MoreShow more
