Denis Ray Della Vedova, 80, of West Des Moines, Iowa (formally of Albia, Iowa) passed away on October 3, 2023. He was born on May 25, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri. Denis, affectionately known as "Disco" was a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, whose loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him. A memorial service to honor Denis' life will be held 2 P. M. , on October 11, 2023, at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Indianola, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer's Association. Denis was a man of great kindness, generosity, and a wonderful sense of humor. As the Patriarch of an Italian family, he was stubborn and controlling, but always put his family first. He had a creative spirit and took pleasure in working with his hands. Denis had strong values and a worldly perspective, always seeking intellectual growth, and embracing new experiences. Throughout his life, Denis built a successful career in the field of construction. His passion for the craft began in the family business at the age of fourteen, and he excelled as a builder with a particular affinity for the artistry of concrete. Denis was truly a master finisher, and his dedication to his work was unwavering. In 1989, Denis and his wife, Virginia, took the opportunity to establish their own business, DDVI, Inc. As a General Contractor, Denis embraced the responsibilities of business ownership, while still imparting his expertise and guidance to his team. Under his leadership, DDVI became one of the most reputable contractors in the state of Iowa. While Denis was devoted to his career, he also found joy in various hobbies and activities. He enjoyed playing golf (until his back wouldn't allow), creating in his workshop (sets for Rock Island High School Group Interp & Drama productions and props for Indianola School District "sock hop" fundraisers), and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan and enjoyed staying informed by watching Fox News. Denis also took pleasure in working with young people, attending Show Choir Competitions, and spending peaceful moments with "Ginny" on the porch, rocking and drinking coffee. He had a gift for storytelling and had a knack for making connections with people from all walks of life. Denis will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his wife Virginia Della Vedova of West Des Moines, Iowa, his son Rino C. Della Vedova of Bettendorf, Iowa, his daughter and son-in-law Gina and Rich Piper of Indianola, Iowa, his grandsons Tyler Piper of Omaha, Nebraska, Nicholas and Logan Piper of Indianola, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father Rino Della Vedova, his mother Ruth Della Vedova, father-in-law Dom Scala, and mother-in-law Katie Scala. Denis will forever be remembered as a man of integrity, dedication, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy of kindness, craftsmanship, and his ability to bring people together will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him.

"Janice Kay Toopes, age 69, of Albia, Iowa, formerly of Centerville, passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, under the care of EveryStep Hospice at Oakwood Specialty Care Center in Albia. Janice was born on December 17, 1953, to Jack and Norma (Spradling) Petersen in Wagner, South Dakota. She grew up and graduated from Maplewood Academy High School in Minnesota before attending Iowa Western Community College where she received her LPN. In 1980, Janice was united in marriage to Robert Toopes at the First Baptist Church in Albia. Janice and Bob later divorced. Janice had a huge heart, was very generous and compassionate, who devoted her life to taking care of others in her long career in the nursing field. She worked as an LPN in different long term care facilities in the area before going to work for the VA Hospital in Knoxville, Marshalltown, Iowa City, and Ottumwa. Janice was always very proud to help take care of veterans. She also volunteered to help those in need, even traveling to Mexico to assist those with cleft palate. Janice enjoyed watching Lifetime movies, drinking coffee and loved a good margarita. Above all else, Janice loved her family and her dog, Ruby. Janice is survived by her 3 children, Travis Nagel, Trinia Clark, and Amanda Toopes; 6 grandchildren, Samantha (Jacob) Fuller, Ryne Fuller, Owen (Skylar) Fuller, Michael Fuller, Jacob Nagel and Jaxson Nagel; and 6 siblings, Meridel (Wendell) Folkerts, Michael (Annette) Petersen, Karen Morman, Terry Petersen, Jack (Lori) Petersen, and Reed Petersen; and her good friends, Margie Riemersma, Sherry Kass, Monica Ridout, Becky Gustafson, and John (Gail) Barnes. Janice is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Norma Petersen; a sister, Leann Petersen; and a nephew, Michael Petersen. "Harold Dean Rogers, age 94, of Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Albia, IA, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023, at Valley View Village in Des Moines. Harold was born on October 25, 1929. He was the sixth born child to Claude and Maud Rogers in the Rogers family home in rural Albia, IA. Harold was raised on the family farm located south of Albia. The farm was 120 acres where the family milked Holstein cows and grew corn and beans. Harold and his five brothers and three sisters helped on the farm milking cows and taking care of the livestock. Harold recalled having a "great time" growing up on the farm with his siblings. There were "ponies to ride and cows to be milked. " Harold and his siblings walked through the fields or rode a pony each day to attend school in a one room schoolhouse. The family did not have modern conveniences that city dwellings had. The farmhouse was updated with indoor plumbing in 1945 and electricity in 1947. Harold graduated from the Albia High School with the class of 1947. Harold joined the United States Army on November 18, 1952, serving in the Korean War. His position was a gunner, shooting 60 mm mortar. He recalled his time in the Korean War as "a great adventure. " He returned from Korea on October 23, 1954. Upon returning from the war, Harold got a job as a Produce Manager at Thriftway Grocery in Des Moines. He met his future bride, Phyllis Rees while roller skating on "Ladies Night" at a skating rink in downtown Des Moines in 1954. He was hired at Colonial Bakery as a bread route delivery man in 1955. Harold and Phyllis were married on February 5, 1956, at Park Avenue Christian Church in Des Moines. They purchased a newly constructed home on the south side of Des Moines and raised their family there. Harold and Phyllis were blessed with three children, Ronald, Karen, and Phillip. They enjoyed spending time with their family boating, camping, water skiing, riding motorcycles, and going on family vacations. Harold continued working at Colonial Bead until 1980. He then purchased Brownberry Bread franchise in Des Moines. The sales territory was larger than what Harold had at Colonial so he hired another route man, his son, Ron and later his nephew, Glen. Harold continued to deliver Brownberry Bread until he was offered an opportunity to sell the franchise. During retirement, Harold and Phyllis spent time traveling. They toured all 50 states as well as Canada and Mexico. They also went to Ireland and were able to see the area where Phyllis's ancestors had lived. Harold also had several part-time jobs after he retired including delivering checks for the courier service, delivering parts for Wykoff Heating and Air Conditioning, and delivering Meals on Wheels for Wesley Life. Harold enjoyed gardening, weekly poker games with his friends, watching football on television with his lovely wife, and playing with his grandchildren. Harold is survived by his wife of 67 years, Phyllis; a son, Ronald (Becky) Rogers and their son, Nick (Kellie) Rogers, Nick and Kellie's children, Cole and Brenna; a daughter, Karen (Bryan Sr. ) Nevins and their son, Bryan Jr. (Hailey) Nevins, Bryan and Hailey's children, MaKayla, Grafton, and Myia; a son, Phil (Lynn) Rogers; two brothers, Jim Rogers and Karl (Susan) Rogers; and a sister, Donna Corliss. Harold is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. Harold is preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Maud Rogers; a grandson, Matthew in infancy; a great grandson, Will in infancy; two sisters, Rena and Pauline; and three brothers, Dwight, Clifford, and Lee. A Celebration of Life will be held from 11:00 a. m. -1:00 p. m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at the Valley View Village Chapel in Des Moines, IA, with Harold's family present to greet family and friends. Burial with military honors provided by the American Legion of Albia, Lovilia, and Melrose will be held at 11:00 a. m. on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Monroe County. "Walter James Harnden, age 75, of Albia, IA, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Oakwood Specialty Care in Albia, surrounded by his loved ones, under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice. Walter was born on October 7, 1948, in Albia, IA, to Thomas "Ted" Z. and Alice Louise (Parker) Harnden. He grew up attending school in Albia before moving to Middletown, IA, where he worked on the assembly line at the ammunition plant for 10 years. On December 1, 1968, he was united in marriage to Linda Mondorf at the First Christian Church in Albia. To this union, 4 children, Tammy, Christine, Michelle, and Wayne, were born. Walter and Linda were blessed with nearly 55 years of marriage prior to his passing. Walter and Linda moved to Danville, IA, where they lived for 15 years before moving back to Albia in 1989. Walter went to work at Mick Furniture for many years where he helped with furniture deliveries and other tasks. Walter enjoyed being outdoors, especially fishing and camping. He was a great bowler. He volunteered his time putting up the flags around the town square for Memorial Day. He enjoyed visiting with others and never knew a stranger. Above all else, Walter loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Walter is survived by his wife, Linda; 3 children, Tammy Harnden, Michelle (Robert) Parks, and Wayne (Robbie) Harnden; 4 grandchildren, Rebecca (Austin Godwin), Nathan (Mariah Smith), and Colton Parks and Avery Harnden; and 2 brothers, Dean (Dixie) Harnden; and Roy Harnden. Walter is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. Walter is preceded in death by a daughter, Christine Harnden; his parents, Ted and Alice Harnden; 4 sisters, Erma Allison, Mary Parcel, Lucille Sleeth, and Ruth Courtney; 3 brothers, Elmer, Thomas "Tommy", and Chester Harnden; 3 half-brothers, Clifford, Melvin, and Carl; and a half-sister, Inez. Louanne was born on January 5, 1943, in Trenton, MO, to Frank and Margaret (Sullivan) Musick. They moved to Chariton, IA, when she was five and she graduated from Chariton High School in 1961. On November 4, 1961, she was united in marriage to Paul McGrath in Melrose, IA, and to this union, 2 sons were born, Gary McGrath and James McGrath. Louanne was a stay-at-home mom for most of her life. She worked at the Albia Newspaper for a few years helping to get the papers sent out. Louanne enjoyed being outdoors and flower gardening. She also liked to do crafty type things and going to yard sales. In the winter months, she liked to do puzzles and crossword puzzles. She always found a way to keep busy. Louanne is survived by her 2 sons, Gary McGrath and James McGrath; 3 grandchildren, James McGrath Jr. , Amanda Tyler, and Alison McGrath; 2 great grandchildren, Audrey and Clara Tyler; and 3 brothers, Bill (Carolyn), Richard, and Mike (Linda). Louanne is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul McGrath; her parents, Frank and Margaret Musick; and 2 brothers, Roger and Robert Musick. "Lois Ann Kendall, age 74, of Albia, IA, passed away on Friday, November 10, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones at her home, under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice. Lois was born on August 1, 1949, in Oskaloosa to Ed and Mary (Adams) Kitzman. She grew up attending Kingsburg country school and later Deep River-Millersburg High where she graduated with the class of 1968. Lois attended Indian Hills Community College in Centerville where she earned her LPN degree. On January 7, 1971, she was united in marriage to Carl Kendall in Deep River, IA, and to this union, 3 daughters, Chris, Cyndi, and Carla, were born. Carl and Lois were blessed with 52 years of marriage prior to her passing. Lois worked for different nursing homes in the area, including Golden Age Care Center in Centerville and the Albia Manor before she went to work at the VA Hospital in Knoxville. She worked there for 32 years prior to her retirement in 2015. She was very kind, caring, generous and compassionate which led her to her nursing career. Lois enjoyed being outdoors and flower gardening. She was a talented seamstress and enjoyed doing needle point and refinishing old furniture. Lois was very active in the county fair, volunteering countless hours, serving on the Monroe County Fair Board for many years and as Superintendent for the exhibit building. She took much pride in watching her children and grandchildren show livestock, taking first in every class at some point over the years. Her faith was very important to her and on Sunday mornings, she could be found watching the livestreamed church service. She also enjoyed watching old television shows. She loved her dog, Ed. She looked forward to lunch get togethers once each month with her old friends and co-workers. Lois loved her family and cherished all the time she spent with them, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lois is survived by her husband, Carl; 3 daughters, Chris (Bill) Knowles, Cyndi (Jim) Wilson, and Carla (Chris) Kendall-Duncan; 10 grandchildren, Travis (Taylor), Becca (Daniel), Dylan (Hailey), Ashlee (Jeremy), Rylin, Branden, Caleb, Shyanne, Madison and Clayton; 3 great grandchildren, Brinley, Harper, and Carter; and 2 brothers, Charles (Betty) Kitzman and Larry Kitzman. Lois is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Mary Kitzman. "Terrence Jack Pope, age 30, of Ottumwa, IA, formerly of Albia, IA, passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. Terrence was born on November 12, 1992, in Canberra, Australia, to Terry and Ramanee "Mickey" (Wickramasekera) Pope. He grew up attending school in Albia and then obtained his Associate of Applied Science degree in Diesel Technology. Terrence had several jobs. One of his favorites being at US Cellular where he was proud of his accomplishments. His most recent job was working construction. Terrence enjoyed being outdoors and hunting and was an avid gun enthusiast. He had a great sense of humor and loved to spend time socializing with his friends. He enjoyed grilling, listening to music, gaming, and singing karaoke. His friends and family often saw him jump up and dance to Hips Don't Lie by Shakira. His true joy in life was spending time with his family and friends. Terrence is survived by his dog, Tomahawk; sons, Jack and Maverick Pope; his father, Terry Pope (Katherine); his mother, Ramanee "Mickey" Pope (Matt); his siblings, Jordan Pope, Michelle (Adam), Tammy (Dale), and Alexandra (Curtis); his grandmother, Elaine Ondaatje; his grandfather, Ananda Wickramasekera; his uncles, Charlie, Merle, and David, his aunts, Vivian and Thushanthee; his cousins, Jake, Jared, Julie, Melody, Daye, William, Benjamin, Jonathan, Michael, Christiana, Steven and Thomas; and his nieces and nephews, Tyson, Samantha, Tiana, Alexander, Connor, Thor, and Zylus. "Charles "Chuck" Mason Conger, age 86, of Albia, Iowa, passed at home surrounded by his loved ones on November 1, 2023. Chuck was born to Harlan Armstrong Conger and Laura Edith (Mark) Conger on January 12, 1937, in a farmhouse near Adel, IA. He graduated from Adel High School in 1955, attended Iowa State College graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor's degree in farm operations and as a member of the ROTC. He married his high school sweetheart Doris June Huston on April 28, 1957. They moved to Lexington, NE in 1959 where he took a position as Farm Broadcaster for KRVN radio. He continued his career by returning to Iowa as the Farm Broadcaster for KBIZ/KTVO in Ottumwa. He was recognized for his skills as Iowa Farm Broadcaster of the Year. The Conger family moved to Albia in 1972 pursuing his dream of owning land and building a cow-calf operation. In 1980, he and Doris established the first liquid lawn fertilizing company in Southeast Iowa called, "Lawn Chief. " To this union were born 4 children: Randall James (Melanie), Susan Marie, Sandra June (Russell), and Jeffrey Mason (Janice). Continuing his legacy are 12 grandchildren: Meredith (Kenny), Catherine (Mark), Courtney (Daniel), Christopher, Cameron, Jessica (Jared), Michael (Emily), Amanda (Mason), Nicholas, Kaitlynn (Donny), Schylar (Colin), and Justin (Brooke) and 9 great grandchildren, Sam, Sutton, Marcus, Cyrus, Scarlett, Leah, Josephine, Wyatt, Carter; and baby girl due in the spring. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary and Rose Marie; a son-in-law, Mark; and a great grandson, Sawyer. Per his request, no public celebration of his life will be arranged at this time. A private family celebration will be held at a later date. "Dean Fred Miller, age 81, of Albia, IA, passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2023, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, IA. Dean was born on August 21, 1942, in Albia to Dexter and Nola (Pinkston) Miller. He grew up attending school in Albia and graduated from Albia High School in 1962. On August 25, 1963, he was united in marriage to Sharon Kay Ford in Newton, IA, and they were blessed with 5 children, Jeff, Shelley, Mary Beth, Robert, and Tim. Dean and Sharon shared 58 years of marriage prior to Sharon's passing on April 22, 2022. Dean was a lifelong farmer. He also worked at Vernon Company Sales and Advertising in Newton where he was a machine operator and later the warehouse manager until his retirement in 2006. Dean was a member of the Albia Baptist Temple and a member of the American Legion in Albia. He enjoyed being outdoors, especially fishing and golfing with his brothers and sons. Dean enjoyed putting puzzles together, which he often glued and framed, as well as playing card games such as farkle, cribbage, and solitaire. Dean loved to visit with others and never knew a stranger. He was a very generous man with a huge heart and was always willing to help anyone in need. Above all else, Dean loved his family and cherished all the time spent with them, especially his grandchildren. Dean is survived by 4 children, Jeff (Loretta) Miller, Shelley (Daniel) Johnson, Robert (Tresa) Miller, and Tim (Lindsey) Miller; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. Dean is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.
