Melvin Chavis, husband, father, grandfather, and friend has gone to be with his Lord. Nicknamed "Papa-Doo" by his family, this gregarious and glad-hearted patriarch passed away on December 5, 2023. Melvin was a friend to many, a stranger to none. With a twinkling eye and a wry smile, he amused and charmed so many during his nearly eighty years on this earth. His playful spirit and humble nature have touched many hearts; his absence is already being keenly felt. Melvin was the second of five children born to Elzie and Leona Chavis. Following a successful childhood, Melvin graduated from Columbia High School with fond memories and great hopes for the future. In 1959, while at Columbia High, Melvin met the woman who would become his high school sweetheart and eventually his beloved wife, Frances Patterson. They settled in Lexington and brought two wonderful children into the world, Mel and Angela. Melvin was a loving and attentive father, and remained so even after his children were grown. Melvin's career is defined by his many years with Shakespeare, beginning in 1962, before moving to Glassmaster in Lexington, S. C. He created the monofilament division in 1980 which survives to this day under a different name. Glassmaster also had a marine division, Glassmaster Boats, which produced what were considered among the best boats manufactured. Melvin returned to Shakespeare in 2008 before retiring to his lake home in 2016 with his beloved Fran. During retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, attending South Carolina Gamecocks football and baseball games, and spoiling his granddaughters. Chavis is survived by his wife; son, Mel; daughter, Angela (Tim Hill); sisters, Joyce, Becky, and Donna; and granddaughters, Ashely Jonaitis and Madison Hill. He is predeceased by a brother, Clyde. The Chavis family will receive visitors at Barr-Price Funeral Home in Lexington on Monday, December 11, 2023 from 5 p. m. until 7 p. m. A celebration of Melvin's life will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at Beulah United Methodist Church with Pastor Tony Rowell officiating. Burial will follow the service at the church cemetery. Memorials or flowers may be given, or you may donate Gideon bibles in Melvin's name at Papa-Doo, we love you. Your love and gentle spirit will live on in our hearts.Show more
