Memphis, TN

"Memphis has lost one of its most radiant stars. Frances McFadden Condon Calil, affectionately known by all as Dodie, passed into eternity on February 23, 2024, at Baptist East Hospital, with her dearest friends by her side. Born into the esteemed Condon family on January 2, 1949, Dodie was the embodiment of grace and vivacity from the very beginning, captivating everyone with her brilliant green eyes and an indomitable spirit that would define her life. A true jewel of Memphis, her early promise was recognized when she was crowned Queen of the Chi Omega Festival at Rhodes College, a prelude to a life lived in the spotlight. Her education at The Hutchison School and Holton Arms School, followed by studies at Mount Vernon College, paved the way for a dazzling journey that took her from the heart of Memphis to the global stage. Dodie's foray into the world of high fashion saw her grace the most illustrious runways, from New York to Paris, where she became a muse for the likes of Pierre Cardin. It was in London's glittering social scene that she met her future husband, Ely Calil. Together, they welcomed their beloved children, George and Katherine, into a world filled with love and laughter. Dodie's knack for hosting, her warmth, and her Southern charm, made her an icon of global hospitality, seamlessly blending Memphis's heart with the cosmopolitan flair of London. In 1995, Dodie returned to her roots in Memphis, enveloped once more in the warmth of lifelong friendships and a community that revered her. Her role on the Board of Directors of the Brooks Museum was but one of her many contributions to the city she adored. Dodie's essence was her unparalleled ability to make everyone feel seen and cherished, a testament to her genuine soul. Her devotion to her family knew no bounds, especially when her grandson Felix faced a health scare. Dodie marshalled an army of support, embodying strength and compassion that saw the family through to Felix's recovery at St Jude’s Hospital, a testament to her unwavering spirit. Survived by her son George Calil, his wife Mariana, and their children Ely Gabriel and Samuel; her daughter Katherine Scorer, her husband Alexis, and their children Leo, Felix, Leila, Mia; her siblings Alice Bingham Gorman, Katherine Condon, Louisa Barrett, and Martin Condon IV, as well as her many nieces, nephews and godchildren. Dodie's legacy is one of love, grace, and the indelible mark she left on every life she touched. Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 PM Friday March 1, 2024 at Canale Funeral Directors with the service following at 3:00 PM. As we prepare to celebrate Dodie's extraordinary life, the family graciously requests that donations in her honor be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a cause close to Dodie's heart. Dodie's light, though no longer with us in this world, will forever illuminate the paths of those who were blessed to know her."
