Michael Mcavoy

Age - N/A

December 11, 2023

August 22, 1942 November 18, 2023 Michael John McAvoy was many things in his full and unique life: son, big-brother, student, track star (self-proclaimed), veteran, dedicated worker, devoted husband, father, uncle, teacher, voracious reader, fly-fisherman, grandfather, author, shepherd, story-teller and world-class curmudgeon. Quick witted with an inclination towards Irish blessings, Robert Service poems, sad Willie Nelson songs and hunting dogs, Dad could sit a spell and spin a yarn with the best of them. He liked his coffee hot, his whiskey Irish & neat, his weather drizzly and his politics revolutionary. Loyal to a fault, his support for family and friends knew no bounds, but he didn't suffer bullies, fools or arseholes and he let them know it. Raised in Berlin, Wisconsin, his childhood was filled with hunting & fishing, family and a love of literature, especially Westerns. As a youngster he tailed his stoic Grandfather where he developed pride of his working class Irish roots, support of the underdog and a healthy distrust of Englishmen. He married the love of his life, Karen Williquette in November 1965 and together had three children. They moved to Oregon in the mid 1970's falling in love with the natural beauty of the Northwest. Karen passed in 1981, leaving Dad to figure out how to raise three children by himself. Retiring after 30+ years in the ball and roller bearing industry, Dad bought a 40 acre plot of land on Puget Island in the Columbia River of SW Washington. Through hard work and pure stubbornness, he built a barn and house and turned that hunk of marsh and "god-damn thistles" into The Faded Rose ranch, raising Irish Dexter cattle, Katahdin & Dorset sheep and some of the longest eye-brows known to mankind. On the farm he toiled in the pastures amid the clover and the mist and perfected the art of becoming a hermit. It was the knees that finally slowed the SOB down. Spending his winters in Sun City, AZ, Dad discovered the joys of early morning swimming, lawn bowling and incessantly emailing his children. This second retirement allowed Dad time to travel, build close relationships with his six grandchildren and to do the thing he loved best, read a good book in a cozy chair and have a little nap. Blessed with the gift of gab and an innate ability to embolden everyday life with flourish, zest and a healthy dose of BS, Dad's stories and letters have entered into lore and are cherished by friends and family. Dad passed away peacefully on November 18, 2023, with his children at his side. He was a completely one-of-a-kind individual who lived life fully on his terms. He will be missed. Celebration of Life and Remembrance tentatively planned for July 2024 in Portland, OR. Dad supported Columbia Riverkeeper in their efforts to protect and restore the water quality of the Columbia River and all life connected to it, from the headwaters to the Pacific Ocean. Dad's beloved Faded Rose Ranch is on an island in the middle of the lower Columbia River and is directly impacted by water issues. https://www. columbiariverkeeper. org/donateShow more

Janet Howerton

Janet Howerton

Age - 90

December 9, 2023

Janet Altheria Howerton, our beloved mother and grandmother, at age 90, has gone home to her heavenly father. She passed away after a valiant six-year battle with dementia on December 3, 2023. She was preceded in death by her father, John Alexander Stuart, mother Polly Dicy (Penrod) Easley, stepfather George Raymond "Pete" Easley, sister Norma Constance "Connie" Stratton, brother Norvel Dean Stuart and her cherished son Randy Stuart Pinson. Janet was born in Lakeside, AZ. on May 28, 1933. She lived in the White Mountains on a homestead until she was eight years old. In 1942, her family moved to Phoenix where she lived for the remainder of her life. Throughout her life, Janet had many hobbies and passions. She loved to dance (square dance and ballroom dance), travel, ride horses, bowl, read, do puzzles, play cards (Uno, Phase 10, Gin Rummy) and Dominos. In 1995 after 25 years, she retired from Motorola. For the next two years, she took trips to many places in the U. S. that she wanted to visit. When her mother had a stroke in 1997, she put her life on hold and spent the next two and a half years caring for her in her home. It was no easy task as she was partially paralyzed and could speak very little. Her love and selflessness was an inspiration to those she loved. When her mother passed away in 2000, Janet was able to go back to enjoying her retirement. She returned to taking trips and spending every summer at her cabin in the White Mountains, which she loved. Janet was also a savvy business woman. In 1975, at the age of 42, with help from her mother and stepfather, she acquired her first rental property. She was able to turn that first home into a portfolio of five homes. She worked tirelessly to maintain the properties and keep them rented. As a single mother with a fulltime job and a two-year old, this was a lot of work. But she persevered and would say, "Not too bad for an old broad". Janet made an impact in many lives through her generous and caring nature. She loved, and was loved by many. Janet is survived by her son, John Dean (Kelly) Pinson, daughters Nola Eileen (Louie) Giddings and Yvette Polly (Matthew) Rushford, two grandsons, six granddaughters and ten great grandkids. A visitation will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023 at 11AM at Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary, 719 N. 27th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ. 85009. Her funeral will be at noon with committal to follow.Show more
