Virginia Craig

Virginia Craig

Age - 92

August 30, 2023

Virginia Elizabeth Price Craig, 92, of Odenton Maryland passed away on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 in Gambrills, Maryland. Virginia was born on May 11, 1931 in Milford, Massachusetts and grew up in Warren, Rhode Island. She was the daughter of the late Theodore W. Price and the late Bertha Irene Jacques Price. Virginia was the ultimate family person. She adored her parents, who navigated the family through the tribulations of the Great Depression and World War II. The values she learned from her parents and from the family's experiences served her well throughout her lifetime. Growing up, Virginia enjoyed picnics by the roadside with her family and fishing with her father at streams and rivers all over Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Her older brother, Teddy, would let her borrow his car when she attended school at Warren High. She was even closer to her beautiful sister, Cece, sharing a bedroom at 23 Harding Avenue overlooking quahogs and fish in the waters a stone's throw away from their bedroom window. After graduating from Warren High School in 1950, Virginia took a job with the telephone company as a switchboard operator. A few years later, she was married and living in Washington D. C. A few years after that, she had made several more moves in the Washington area, to Virginia and then to Maryland while beginning to raise her three children, Jimmy, Billy and Cyndi. What a big change for a small-town girl! Virginia was a great mother to her children, always encouraging them, never doubting them and forever loving them unconditionally. She took them back to her childhood home in Warren most every summer, where they made many memories with their cousins, Derrie, Stevie, Tommy and Grant at wonderful places such as "the raft," Crescent Park, Goosewing Beach, Gray's Ice Cream and "Flintstone Park" in Little Compton. When difficulties came to the family in the late 1960's, Virginia stood tall. She found herself alone, with three children to finish raising, a mortgage and little to no outside financial support. She didn't flinch, leveraging what little work experience she had and a lot of moxie, to find a job with Levitt and Sons in Bowie, Maryland. She kept the roof over the family's heads and saw that her children all graduated and went on to lead successful lives of their own. She also loved all of her grandchildren and loved spending time with them as they grew up. Virginia's professional career spanned many years. After several years with various companies in the Bowie area, Virginia finished her career as the main receptionist and switchboard operator at Digital Equipment Corporation in Lanham, Maryland. But even in retirement, she remained busy, volunteering with the Bowie public television station, and winning awards, in various roles for several years. Virginia was the last of her generation of the Price family, having been predeceased by her brother, Theodore W. Price, Jr. and his wife Sally of White Plains NY, and by her sister, Cecelia M. Cordeiro and her husband Ernest of East Hampton, Connecticut. She is survived by her children, James L. Craig, Jr. and his long-time partner Elizabeth J. (Jean) Matherne of Millersville MD, William J. Craig of Cedar Park TX and Cynthia S. Greathouse and her husband Donald S. (Stuart) Greathouse of Gaithersburg MD; grandchildren James L. Craig, III, Cara Lynn Braswell and husband Clifton B. (Blake) Braswell, Michael J. W. Craig and his wife Laura, Mark A. Craig, Heather M. Willis and her husband Cory J. Willis, Cynthia V. Craig, and Donald W. (Wayne) Greathouse; great-grandchildren Nora Craig, Hadley Willis and Harrison Willis; nieces and nephews Derrie A. Cordiero, Steven Cordeiro and his wife Camille, Thomas Cordeiro and his wife Kimberly, Grant W. Cordeiro and his girlfriend Laura Filippone, and Boyd W. Price; and a host of grand-nieces, grand-nephews and other extended family. Virginia was totally dedicated to her family, always putting their interests ahead of her own. Up until her late eighties, she remained very active, regularly attending classes and events at the O'Malley Senior Activity Center in Odenton, Maryland, taking walks and spending quality time with relatives and friends. She particularly treasured weekly visits by her daughter, Cyndi; weekly phone calls with her sister, Cece; seeing her son Bill's plays in person or recorded; and long holiday weekends at Craig House featuring the best omelets in the entire world. The family would like to thank the nurses and other caregivers at Arbor Terrace Waugh Chapel and Luminis Health Gilchrist Lifecare Institute for their excellent, compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Virginia's name may be given to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave. , Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601. A funeral service will be held at the Price family plot at Mt. Hope Cemetery, North Attleboro, Massachusetts at 10:00 AM on September 2, 2023. Show more
