Lyle V. Johnson, age 84 years formerly of Oswego, Illinois, passed peacefully surrounded by family on November 21, 2023, at Solaris Medical Center in Plant City, Florida. Lyle was born on September 1, 1939, in Aurora, Illinois to Laverne ("Monk") and Ruth Johnson.
He was raised the son of a farmer with many family, friends and fellow farmers throughout the Platteville, Illinois community. Lyle learned a strong work ethic as a young man helping on the farm which served him well in many endeavors throughout his life. He attended McCauley school on Caton Farm and Schlapp Roads in Kendall County and Oswego High School, graduating in 1957. He maintained strong friendships with several classmates from OHS that affectionately called themselves "club 57". Following graduation, Lyle attended Joliet Junior College before transferring to the University of Illinois where he graduated with his Bachelor's degree in Accounting. In July of 1961 he started his career with Northern Illinois Gas Company, but his career would be temporarily paused due to the draft. He honorably served in the United States Army from 1963-1965. Lyle was stationed in Ft. Eustis, Virginia where he was trained as a tandem Rotor helicopter repairman. He was stationed in Korea during a large portion of his service. Lyle returned to Illinois in 1965 and resumed his career at Northern Illinois gas where he worked as the Manager of the pipeline rates department until his retirement in 1995. During his 34-year career, he spent many hours working numbers, balancing spreadsheets, and testifying on behalf of the rates department in Washington DC. He had a remarkable knack for working with numbers and his children often deferred to him for help with math homework, personal finances, and advice. Lyle was dedicated to service at his church homes and held positions as treasurer at both St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Aurora, Illinois as well as The Church of The Good Shepherd in Oswego, Illinois. He also served as a trustee on the Oswego Village Board for several years during the 1970's. In his retirement Lyle enjoyed spending time with his wife, Roberta at their Wisconsin home as well as wintering in Leesburg, Florida. He was a great navigator and was always up for a fun day trip or even a few days on the road to a new destination. Lyle was notorious for working on a project or helping his children with projects at their homes. His friends and family would be the first to tell anyone that he had a fabulous sense of humor and spent much time laughing, teasing, and telling a silly joke. In fact, it is his jovial and easy-going personality that will be missed so much by all of us who know and love him. He has been a loving and faithful husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Lyle is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Roberta (nee Brookman), his Children, Scott Johnson of Oswego, Illinois, Cynthia (Brad) Marsh of Plant City, Florida and Carol (Victor) Melgoza of Plant City, Florida.
