David Matte Obituary

With broken hearts the family announces the passing of David Ronald Matte "Okie" at his home in Levack, Ontario on Saturday, September 9th, 2023, at the age of 61. David is remembered by his mother Joan and father Ron predeceased, sisters Paula, Lisa (Jeff Payne), Gina, and his nephew Max. David will be missed by his aunts, uncles, and many cousins and friends. David will be greatly missed by his hockey "bro" Kevin. David was avid in sports and was a great athlete. He played fastball with the Levack Piccalo's and was their pitcher. We have been told that his pitches were very fast, hard, and not easy to catch. David was also a star hockey goaltender. He played his minor hockey in Levack leading the Huskies to many championships. He then moved to the East Coast winning 3 Allen Cups. In 2011 David had has his #30 hockey jersey retired by the Corner Brook Royals. In 2021 David was inducted into the Newfoundland Hockey Hall of Fame. David also loved sitting with his mom watching the Toronto Blue Jays. A mass to celebrate David's life will be held on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023, at 11:00 am at St. Bartholomew's church in Levack, ON. Friends may gather at the church on Saturday after 10:30 am. Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium with burial alongside his father in Maplecrest Cemetery in Dowling. Reception at the Golden Age Club in Onaping following the burial on Saturday until 4pm. In loving memory of John Charles William Gilbert who passed away peacefully at his residence on December 8th, 2023 at the age of 81. Beloved husband of Theresa Gilbert. Loving and devoted father of Brent (Lorilynn), Darren (Elizabeth) & Johnny (Lisa). Grandfather of 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. John spent over 50 years in the automotive parts industry and worked up until this past year. His dedication to the industry always went above and beyond. He was a fan of many sports but loved his New York Yankees. He very much enjoyed travelling and relaxing in the hot sun on a beach. At John's request there will be no visitation or service. In loving memory of Robert "Bob" James Stevenson 80 years. Passed away suddenly at his residence on Thursday, December 7th, 2023. Beloved husband of 40 years to Theresa Stevenson (nee Jeanveau) predeceased in 2015. Loving and devoted father of Gregory, Jason predeceased, Todd, Sandra, and Jamey predeceased. Cherished grandfather of Amber (Curtis), Brittney (Derek), Hailey (Dylan), Chelsey, and Eric, and great grandfather Adeline, Mason, Hunter, Beau, and Aria. Predeceased by his parents Loral and Constance Stevenson (nee Beaudoin) and baby brother Patrick, brothers Tom and Garry. Brother of Barbara. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by nieces, nephews, family, friends, and Julie Brunelle. Robert was born in Sudbury on January 20th, 1943. He was proud to be a miner and started his career in Thompson, Manitoba with INCO for 6 1/2 years, before starting with Falconbridge where he worked for over 30 years. He loved hunting, fishing and cooking. At his request there will be no visitation or service. Jean-Marion Dionne

Jean Marion Dionne (nee Lawrence) February 4th, 1940 to December 3, 2023 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Dionne at the age of 83 at Trillium Manor, Orillia after a long battle with dementia. She was the daughter of Eugene and Clara Lawrence of Monetville, Ontario. She had 6 half brothers and sisters Frank Georgeff( Jean), George Georgeff(Nova), Lillian(Donald), Larry( Rita), Mary(Donald), Donna(Donald) and was the loving mother of 3 children Muriel Lavallie( Gary), Ron Dionne( Linda), and Allan Dionne and 4 grandchildren Christina(Andrew) ,Amanda(Andre), James(Natalie) , Sara(Austin)as well as 10 Great grandchildren Ava, Bryce, Ryder, Felix, Alexandre, Lexie, Austin, Jade, Eve, Olivia and 1 great, great grandson Mayson whom she loved deeply. She was born in Monetville and after graduating from Sturgeon Falls High school she immediately started a job in Sudbury at the Sudbury Star newspaper where she worked until she retired. Jean got married and moved to Val Caron where she lived with husband Rheal Dionne(pre deceased). Jean enjoyed travelling, fishing, going on cruises and especially playing cards. She loved being a snowbird in Florida for 20 plus years and her many friends and family. Jean will be sadly missed by many but she is now reunited with the love of her life, her husband of 63 years Rheal and all who have passed before her. We will have a celebration of life at Jackson Barnard in the Spring of 2024 .Show more

In loving memory of Doris Pierette Lafantaisie who passed away peacefully December 7th, 2023 at Maison McCulloch Hospice at the age of 82. Beloved wife of Alfred 'Jack' Lafantaisie (predeceased). Cherished mother of Tim (Joy) and Bill (Christine). Treasured Grandmother of Stephanie Lafantaisie (Rodney), and Great Grandmother of Lyra. Dear daughter of William and Simone Garvin (both predeceased). Special sister to John (predeceased), William, Mona (predeceased) and Anne. She will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. After retirement Doris and her lifetime partner (Jack) enjoyed travelling and camping. Doris spent much of her spare time volunteering at the Royal Purple, Club Amicale and the Canadian Red Cross. Doris also enjoyed many visits spending time with her family in Quebec. We would like to thank the staff at Maison McCulloch Hospice for their care and compassion during her short stay. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.Show more

Age - 100

In Loving Memory of Doreen Mary Frances Lewis (nee D'Cruz) The oldest of 12 children, is united with her loving husband, William Lewis, and her eldest son, Richard. She will be sadly missed by her children: Michael Lewis (Brockville), Mark Lewis (Pointe Claire), and Celia Wiley (Sudbury - David predeceased). She leaves behind a legacy of 29 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren who celebrate her life of service and deep belief. A third-order Franciscan, Doreen, inspired by the Holy Spirit, spread the Love of God in community works of Faith. Church communities where she lived her faith were changed by her Loving presence at St. Lawrence, (Karachi), Ste. Suzanne (Montreal), St. Charles Borromeo (Toronto), and St. Patrick's in Sudbury. A dedicated teacher and consummate pedagogue, she left her mark on the hearts of her students for almost 50 years from her beginning in Karachi, Pakistan to Montreal, Quebec. To all who knew her and loved her, she would say " I love you, I bless you, I leave you in God's hands". In place of flowers, please make donations to Maison Mc Culloch Hospice. James Smith

Age - 90

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Dennis Smith at the age of 90. Jim led his life with a beautiful balance of grace and compassion. He was fiercely dedicated to our community and was delighted by the successes of his family. As the retired Director of Education, he was keenly interested in his students as they moved through the education system and transitioned into working life. His volunteer work with many organizations from Dragon Boats to Laurentian University, Health Sciences North, and St. Andrew's United Church will be missed by many in Sudbury. Jim is survived by loving wife Gloria Oldenburg and sons Jim (wife Lisa) and Peter (wife Marsha). He was devoted to his Grandchildren Samantha (Jeff McGarry), Katrina (Mario Marcantognini), Timothy, Bryson, and Jacob. More recently he was delighted to become Great Grandpa "GG" to Daphne, Maia, Micheal, Eleanor, Charlotte, and Mara. Jim was loving uncle to nieces Lori Smith (partner Tom Zanetti and sons Declan and Connor), Stacey Bellmore (Marc and daughters Dani and Mackenna), Glenda Oldenburg (sons Cameron, Evan, and Jake) and nephew Greg Oldenburg (Lisa and daughter Lauren). Jim is predeceased in 1997 by his first wife Betty Lou (Lavigne), parents James (Jim) and Catherine Smith and brother Ken Smith (Ann). Dad was always there to celebrate our successes and to comfort us when challenges faced us. Jim touched the lives of so many in Sudbury and his beloved community of Creighton Mine where he was born. Bernard Franklin

Age - 84

Dr. Bernard Franklin ("Bernie") Bernard passed away peacefully on December 3, 2023. He left us quietly and without warning and was most certainly welcomed by his loving wife Clare, along with other family and friends. Bernard leaves behind a legacy of determination, hard work, faith and a true appreciation of the richness of family. Bernard is predeceased by his wife Clare (nee Fleming). He is survived by his children Louise (Terry Roque), Liesel, and Paul (Traci), as well as his 7 grandchildren, Callum and Benjamin Roque, Gillian, Carys, and Aidyn Franklin, and Grace and Matthew Franklin, all of whom warmly called him, "Grumpa. " He is also survived by his extended family in England and Germany. Bernard was born in 1939 in Northumberland, England, which he fondly referred to as "God's Country. " Early in life, Bernard recognized the value of an education and worked with determination to be granted an academic scholarship to the Durham University School of Medicine. He completed various residencies and internships before choosing obstetrics and gynecology as his specialty. Early in his career, Bernard met a "beautiful and competent" RN, Clare, who became his best friend and wife. Together, they nurtured a family of 3 children, immigrated to Canada and worked together at his practice in their new home of Sudbury, Ontario. Their children were their pride and joy. Life reveled around their family as Bernie and Clare instilled their core values through their love and support of their children, well into adulthood. Family and friends were an integral part of Bernie's life. They were always welcome at the Franklin home, where stories, meals and laughter were often shared, as well as words of encouragement when needed. Dear friends became family and will always retain this endearment. During his many years in medicine, Bernard touched countless lives through his expertise and compassion. As a skilled obstetrician, he brought new life to many families, often through complicated pregnancies and deliveries, as well as performing complex surgeries and intricate procedures as a gynecologist. Bernard recognized the extra needs of the marginalized and disadvantaged. He went to great lengths to ensure all patients received empathy and quality care. Bernard and Clare enjoyed their travels back to England and Germany, as well as to sunny and tropical destinations. They also took advantage of work opportunities throughout the years and journeyed to various destinations while Bernard completed locums. Finlandia Village has been Bernie's home for the past few years, where new friends were fondly met. The family would like to extend their most sincere and heartfelt gratitude to the staff and friends, present and past, who have cared for Bernie at Finlandia Village, in particular those in the Kussi Home area. In Loving Memory of George William Third August 24, 1932 - December 3, 2023 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of George William Third on December 3, 2023 at the age of 91. Born to Eunice (nee Hughson) and William "Bill" Third. Dear Brother of Ed Third (predeceased) (Lily), Hugh Third (predeceased) (Lois), Elaine (Third) McGauley (predeceased) (Dwight (predeceased)). Dear Uncle of Bob, Bruce and Margaret, Lisa (predeceased), Krista and David, and Deborah, Heather and Kristina. Dear Great Uncle to many nieces and nephews. George was born and raised in Manitowaning, where he lived and worked on the family farm and as a wood worker who was well known for his furniture and cabinetry. George spent years curling at the Assiginack Curling Club and in later years at the Little Current Curling Club. He enjoyed beekeeping for a number of years. In the early '90's he sold the farm and moved to Little Current Place apartments where he remained until earlier this year when he moved into the Manitoulin Centennial Manor. He spent a great deal of time over the years, researching family history and was always happy to share this history. He also enjoyed bird watching and building blue bird boxes. Many of his blue bird boxes can be seen along the fence lines on Eastern Manitoulin. He always enjoyed watching sports, especially curling, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He will be greatly missed and always remembered by family and friends. At George's request, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. A private family gathering will take place at a later date. Donations in George's memory can be made to the Manitoulin Health Centre auxiliary. Loving mother of Jamie Lavalley, Rod Lavalley and Daniel Lavalley. Cherished daughter of Lillian and Alcide Lamondin both predeceased. Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Diane loved fishing and boating on Georgian Bay. She loved the family dogs Gizmo, Chance, Scooter, and Sandy. Diane will be remembered as a friendly vibrant person who was kind and caring. She made friends easily and was always quick to help others. The priority in her life was her loving family.
