LOCAL SERVICES: A Celebration of Life for Brian Duncan will be Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 5:00 PM at the Unadilla Methodist Church in Unadilla, Nebraska. Brian "Duncan" Kelly Duncan, 49, Minot, successfully beat esophageal cancer (military service-connected when deployed in Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf War) and went to heaven on Saturday, November 4, 2023. His wife rang the bell at the cancer care center on his behalf, as God promises that in heaven, his cancer will NEVER return. Duncan was born September 17, 1974, in Lincoln, Nebraska, the son of Norman and Rose (Maloy) Duncan. His hometown was Unadilla, NE. In 1993, he graduated from Syracuse, NE, and joined the U. S. Air Force. While stationed at Minot Air Force Base, he met his wife, Cari Hickman, while cruising Broadway. They married on June 15, 1996, at 21 and 19 years old, and celebrated a 29-year relationship this summer. They lived in Sawyer, ND, before moving to Minot. They have three boys. Employment included USAF, ING, Cognizant, 10 North Main, and most recently, the Ward County State Attorney's office. He also owned a business "selling his nuts" called "Doozy's Delectables. "Many will remember Duncan as a dedicated family man who was so proud of his boys. Duncan modeled to them how to give the most amazing hugs. We will not forget Duncan's smile, charm, quick wit, animated klutziness, gestures and noises, love of ketchup (or other sauces that were dripped and stained on his shirt), cooking with cast iron, funny wigs, and humor that included dad jokes, puns, and gentle teasing. He had such a positive outlook on overcoming circumstances related to his cancer. Even though Duncan was going through a lot, his goal was to make others happy no matter what was happening and remind others that God was still in control. He loved people, giving compliments and giving nicknames. Duncan adored his 26-pound cat (who gained a pound during our "memory" trip to Colorado). He loved to sing funny, made-up lyrics, golf, camp with the Rylanders, and walk, especially at the YMCA. Shows like MASH and The Andy Griffith Show entertained him. Smitten by his Ford Ranger, Duncan encouraged others to talk about, look at, and admire it, too. These past few months, he often talked about how loved he felt with all the reunions of family, friends, and military buddies brought together by his illness. He had a fantastic day during the golfing benefit scramble that brought even more people together, and he believed that the fall foliage that he prayed would linger and hang on a bit longer for him did. The family extends a special thank you for the loving care by the many medical professionals and therapists provided these past months. He softened the protective boundary between client/patient and staff because he loved you all! His soul as well as yours was forever shaped to accommodate the circumstances. He called out to your hearts to awaken your passions and God- given gifts to complete vulnerable tasks that connect us all to our humanness. Duncan is survived by his wife Cari, sons Jayden, Sam, and Charlie; his mother Rose; mother-in-law Leona (Richard) Lochthowe; sister-in-law Leslie "Lillian" (Jr. ) Velazquez; brother-in-law Kris (Donna) Hickman; stepsister-in-law Maria (Kevin) Landrum; stepbrother-in-law Terrance (Jessica) Lochthowe; half-brothers Mike (Gina) Duncan; Larry (Kim) Duncan and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Duncan was preceded in death by his father, Norman, and sister, Connie. He and his wife also suffered the loss of an unborn child.
