Susan "Sue" Bear Willson Susan "Sue" (Bear) Willson, 81, passed away on February 24, 2024, in Burlington, North Carolina. She was born on October 6, 1942, in Columbus, Ohio, to Lawrence K. Bear, Sr. and Mary E. Bear (nee Bakes). Sue was a dynamic woman who touched the lives of many. If we all get at least one gift from God, Sue's gift was the gift of encouragement. This was no more evident in her life than when she counseled parents and students with learning disabilities. She was their champion in so many ways, providing resources, meeting with parents, and guiding them on a path to success for their child. The strokes that eventually claimed her body and silenced Sue were five in all. During her seven year journey one of her greatest loves was attending Stroke Camp each year. To show you her indomitable spirit, check this link to her first Stroke Camp in 2018 where she began to speak: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gLlRECfR9Q Sue graduated from the University of Michigan School of Nursing in 1964. She began her nursing career at Boston Children's Hospital, the Jimmy Fund Clinic, and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. She then worked at the Royal and Ancient St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, England, before returning to the United States. In Ohio, she briefly worked at University Hospital at The Ohio State University before marrying Bob Willson. Sue continued her nursing career at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia, a pediatrician's office in Cincinnati, and as a visiting school nurse in the Lakota School System in West Chester, Ohio. After retiring from active nursing she continued what she termed her "chicken soup practice" in the neighborhood. Nurses will know what this means. Sue was a passionate gardener and her green thumb was well-known. Many have transplanted her famous hostas in their own gardens. She also enjoyed exercise, walking, hiking, biking and spending time outdoors. Raised in the North Broadway United Methodist Church in Columbus, Sue and Bob accepted Christ as their personal savior while attending Clovernook Christian Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sue is survived by her brother, Daniel C. Bear of Westerville, Ohio; nieces and nephews, Christen Bear of Dubai, Matthew Bear of Westerville, Ohio, Michael Bear of Lawrence, Kansas, Benjamin Bear of Columbus, Ohio; sister-in-law, Candy Bear of Dublin, Ohio; children, Anna M. Hinson (Dean Hinson) of Seagrove, NC, and James R. Willson (Annie Lovell) of Lexington, North Carolina; grandsons, Tyler J. Willson, Jeremy D. Willson of Jacksonville, Florida, and Lucas D. Willson of Lexington, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence K. Bear, Sr., mother, Mary E. Bear (nee Bakes), brother, Lawrence K. Bear, Jr., and infant daughter, Rachel Susan Willson, aged 14 days. Sue's memorial service will be held on February 28, 2024, at 1:00 PM in the May-Foley Chapel at Twin Lakes Community, Coble Creek Healthcare, 3802 Wade Coble Drive, Burlington, NC 27215. A time of visiting with the family will follow the service. Additionally, a celebration of life will be held on March 9, 2024, at 1:00 PM in the chapel at Christ's Church at Mason, 5165 Western Row Road in Mason, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, Sue's family kindly requests that donations be made to one of the following organizations: Retreat and Refresh Stroke Camp in Peoria, Illinois (www.strokecamp.org), Hospice Care of Alamance County, AuthoraCare Collective in Burlington, NC (www.authoracare.org), or the University of Michigan, School of Nursing, Undergraduate Scholarship Fund (www.nursing.umich.edu/giving).
