Anne Ward

Anne Ward

Age - 69

December 1, 2023

Anne Ward, a Cleveland original, a longtime Bethlehem resident, and a proud Spencer, Indiana transplant, whose sharp wit could only be matched by her sharp mind, has taken her final curtain call on November 27, 2023, after a valiant battle with leukemia. Born in April 1954, in Cleveland, Ohio, Anne was the kind of person who could find the humor in almost anything, and she'd insist you do the same, even now. Educated at the Hathaway Brown School, Anne could outwit any of the kids at a time when girls were supposed to be more seen than heard. She carried that fiery spirit to Mount Vernon College of Washington D. C. , diving into history with the zeal of a detective unraveling a mystery. Her piercing, analytical approach to her schooling laid the groundwork for a life spent questioning everything, and challenging herself and everyone around her. Anne's love for history was second only to her love for her family. She leaves behind a legacy in her sons, Lou Capwell with his wife Laura Stantz, and Al Capwell, with his wife Dana Okray, who both inherited her intellect as well as her love for adventure. Certainly not to be forgotten is her beloved cat, Buddy, whose legendary life will continue as a part of Lou and Laura's herd of pets. She is also survived by the boys' father, Steven Capwell, with whom Anne remained friends to the end. While some folks collect stamps or coins, Anne collected volunteer hours like they were going out of style. She loved sharing her time and spirit with the Tivoli Theatre in Spencer, where she happily filled popcorn buckets on weekends. She also pitched in with the Owen County Democrats, canvassing and campaigning for local candidates. Back in Pennsylvania, she was deeply involved with the Boy Scouts, filling various roles on the camp staff at her beloved Camp Trexler, making lifelong friends. Anne's interests were as eclectic as her book collection. She was an avid movie watcher, a voracious reader, a dedicated public radio listener (and donor- you should be, too!) and an aspiring gardener-- finally finding success in recent years with beautifully potted flowers every summer. But it was on her front porch where she truly shined. There, she'd sit with a smoke, ready to offer a smile or smalltalk with anyone who passed by. It was her happiest place, and she loved watching the seasons change from her favorite seat. Anne was smart, giving, and downright funny. Whether she was describing an episode of television that she didn't want to spoil the ending of, or discussing the news of the day, she'd do so with a sharp wit and a twinkle in her eye. Her laughter was infectious, and she loved nothing more than to catch up with someone and brag about her favorite people. So here's to Anne Ward, her life well-laughed and well-lived, and the legacy she leaves behind. Her departure leaves a void in the tapestry of our lives, but there's so much of her to carry with us and smile about, as anyone who knew her could attest. The history books may not mention her, but the history of our hearts will never forget her incisive intellect, generous spirit, and love for everyone she held in her heart. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to her two favorite causes: 88. 1 FM WDIY of Bethlehem, PA, and the Spencer Tivoli Theater of Spencer, INShow more
