"Daniel James Smith, 46, of Duck, WV, (Clay County), died Thursday September 21, 2023 at CAMC General in Charleston, WV. Memorial funeral service will be conducted 2:00 PM Friday September 29, 2023 at Chapman\u0027s Mortuary Huntington with Pastor Larry Hendricks officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Park. He was a Chef and Carpenter. He was the grandson of the late Rev. Gaines E. and Mattie Smith and the late Wayne and Mabel Webb. Daniel was born May 31, 1977 in Huntington, WV, a son of and Waynette Webb (Gary) Dodrill of Duck. He was also survived by his father, Michael (Patricia) Smith of Huntington, his wife Carrie Craig and son, Daniel J Smith, Jr. both of Chesapeake, OH, two brothers, Wayne (Angie) Smith and Charles Ashley Smith, Aunts, Donna (Otis) Smith and Kelly (Alan) Smith all of Huntington, sister-in-law and very good friend, Kelly Blake, his Browning cousins in Ohio and Louisiana, and his many friends in Huntington, Birch River, Clay, Duck and Gassaway, WV. Sara Frances Tomkies Blethen, mother, teacher, traveler, reader, passed peacefully in her sleep on December 4, 2023 in Florida at the age of 93. . Sara was born on December 16, 1929 to Frank and Clara Tomkies, and spent most of her life in Huntington, West Virginia. She attended Huntington High School and graduated with honors in science and music. She graduated in just three years at Randolph Mason Women's College, and went on to receive her Master's degree plus 45 hours in English from Marshall University in 1951. She married Harry Samson Blethen, Jr. , which later resulted in divorce but also blessed her with four daughters (Mary Katherine, Margaret Joy, Angela Christine, and Anne Harriet). She then spent 26 years raising her family and enriching lives as a teacher, first as a substitute and then as an elementary school teacher in Cabell County Public Schools. Her impact went beyond the classroom as she volunteered and served her community as a historian and leader at Enslow Park Presbyterian Church, secretary and treasurer of AAUW, committee chair of Delta Kappa Gamma, and board member of Stella Fuller and Cridlin. Retirement did not slow her down as she volunteered at Lucy's Attic and Hospice, served the Women's Club as secretary, treasurer, and committee chair, and at her local chapter of AARP as vice president and secretary. Sara could always be found with a book in hand. She was an avid reader, and any time she visited family a trip to the bookstore was a must. She also loved to travel, visiting such places as Australia and Thailand. Education was her passion, and even in conversation she was always teaching, leaving no story untold. Sara was predeceased by her parents and siblings, two brothers Frank and Charles, and sister Clara; as well as her daughters Margaret Tucker (Bruce) and Angela Christine Bias. She is survived by her daughters Mary Stowasser (Gary) and Harriet Romans (Richard), and their families, including multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held 10 a. m. Monday, December 11, 2023 at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens of Huntington. Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.Show more

Ernest Bryson "Ernie" Golder, 91 of Huntington, WV, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at The Village at Riverview, with his family by his side. He was born October 7, 1932 in Nescopeck, PA to the late Ernest B. Golder and Bessie Hooper Golder. He is survived by his beloved wife, Helen Golder, of sixty seven years; their son, Stephen Golder; his brother, Robert Golder of Berwick, PA; two nieces in PA and his two very dear friends, Tommy and Janet Arthur. He worked his entire life for ACF Industries at various locations, Berwick, PA, Milton, PA, St. Charles and St. Louis, MO and Huntington, WV the longest. Ernie and Helen lived in the same home in Huntington for over fifty years until recently moving to The Village at Riverview in Barboursville. He was a graduate of Berwick High School and served four years in the United States Air Force. He was a Veteran of the Korean War. Ernie was a graduate of Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA with a B. S. degree in Commerce and Finance. Most of his work with ACF was in the field of finance until 1985 when he was made plant manager in Huntington. Ernie was a member of Knapp Lodge #462 F and AM and Royal Arch Chapter 218 of Berwick. His interests were his family, playing golf, traveling, cooking, Marshall sports and German Shepherds. He was the first President of Council at Hope Lutheran Church in St. Charles, MO where he and his family were charter members. He continued to serve his Lord at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Huntington. Ernie served several terms on Church Council and was Treasurer. He served on many committees regarding the finances of the church including the Audit Committee. Beard Mortuary is assisting the family. There will be no visitation. Gloria Jean Ward (Pritchard), 77, of Huntington WV ended her courageous battle with cancer on Sunday December 3rd, 2023, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. Gloria was born to the late Lavera Calfee Pritchard Lilly and Howard Thomas Pritchard in Mullens WV on December 29th, 1945. Gloria was a proud alumna of Marshall University. She not only obtained a bachelor's degree in education, but also a master's degree in guidance counseling. Gloria retired from Clear Channel Radio after 22 wonderful years working in advertising, with more friends and treasured experiences than she could count. However, Gloria's shining achievement and greatest joy was her family. Gloria tied the knot here in Huntington WV with her soulmate, James Donald Ward, on November 11th, 1989. Together, they built a life they loved. They are now reunited in the Kingdom of Heaven. She was a devoted mother to Billy Price and Lisa Price Borden, and stepmother to Gemmie Sue Morris, Donald (Kim) Ward, and Fred (Lynn) Ward. She adored being a "Gigi" to her grandchildren, Mason Price, Holly Price, and Grant Borden. Her memory and legacy will be survived and honored by both her children, grandchildren, and treasured cousin Mark Calfee. Gloria was a social butterfly who loved her family and friends fiercely. She made an instant impact on those she met and brightened every room. She never missed an opportunity to showcase her quick wit and never made anyone wonder what she was thinking. Her absence is deeply felt by all who knew and loved her. A celebration of Gloria's life will be held at Beard Mortuary on December 14th from 4-6 pm, with service to follow. Vivian V. Hall, 92, passed away on November 25, 2023, at Ashtabula County Medical Center. She was born on November 9, 1931, to the late Virgil Keefer and Lucy (Williams) Hook in Huntington, West Virginia. She married John "Bill" Hall and shared 54 years of marriage, eight children, and numerous grandchildren. Her husband John "Billy" Hall passed on April 10, 2023. He was born July 9, 1937, in Tioga, West Virginia to the late Earl and Mabel (Gregory) Butcher. Vivian retired from MFG after 30 years of service to the company. Bill worked as a truck driver for numerous companies throughout his career. Vivian was a wonderful woman and was very environmentally conscious, she enjoyed her daily walks, and didn't leave the house without her bag to collect the litter she found along the way. She loved animals and fed the neighborhood cats and worked with the city to get them fixed. She and Bill enjoyed traveling. They spent the last 26 years in Florida, she recently moved back after Bill's passing in April. They are survived by children, Mitzi (Cliff) Housel, Donna (Randy) Noce, Gina (Tony) Gagliardi, Patty (Vic) Headly, Judy Thomas, David Greogory, Cheryl (Tom) Hanna; Bill's siblings, Delores Horvath, Terry (Sherri) Butcher, Rosetta McKinley; andnumerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. They were preceded in death by their daughter, Krystal Sundstrom; Vivan's sisters, Evelyn Adkins and Ann King; Bill's siblings, Betty Butcher, Barbara Johnston, Carl Hall, Gary Butcher, and Delmas Butcher; and their parents. He was born on April 10, 1961 in Huntington, WV, to the late Helen Gay Carter and Clarence Arthur Carter Sr. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by one brother, Edward Frye. Arty spent his life as a heavy machinery operator. He was a socialite and free spirit. He spent his free time riding his Harley, working on numerous projects, and listening to music. To know Arty, was to love Arty.
