Daniel Scobie Follis of Grosse Pointe - Beloved husband, father and grandfather, loyal friend, mentor, businessman, golfer, sailor, music lover, squash champion, and pool shark, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 1st at the age of 86. Born in 1937 in Detroit to Grace Scobie and Dr. Wesley Follis, he attended Grosse Pointe South High School (then referred to as "The High") and was a proud member of the 1954 high school football state championship team. Dan accepted a basketball scholarship to The University of Colorado, where after playing one season returned home to care for his parents. Upon returning to Michigan, he played three seasons for Duffy Daugherty on Michigan State University's football team. After earning his degree from MSU, the Philadelphia Eagles invited him to camp to play in the NFL, but Dan chose the stock brokerage business which began a long career in investing, radio station sales and ownerships, and managing The Buick Open PGA golf tournament. His favorite gig, though, was as the color commentator of Michigan State Football in the 80's, especially calling the 1988 Rose Bowl game which the Spartans won. Dan loved Michigan State and was a proud member of Sigma Chi, but he reluctantly sent all three of his children to the University of Michigan, often stating that his kids couldn't get in to State. Go Green! In 1964, Dan married Mary Patricia Hoker "Pat", who had three wonderful children from a prior marriage; Shelley, Martin and Tamara. In 1966, Dan and Pat gave birth to their only child, Daniel Scobie Follis, Jr. After a long illness, Pat died in 1977. In 1979 Dan found the next love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Stein "Libby" and the two started a long and wonderful life together. They brought two beautiful children into the world - Annie and Michael. Dan's family meant everything to him. He always expressed how grateful he was to have such a loving wife, healthy and happy children, and a wonderful extended family. Dan was well read (as long as the subject was World War II and Winston Churchill), and he loved his little red MG. He had a magnetic personality, his laughter filled the room, and he had a huge heart. He was a member of the Detroit Golf Club, the Country Club of Detroit, and was a member of the Detroit Athletic Club for 55 years. Dan is survived by his wife of 44 years, Libby, their children Daniel (Maureen), Anne Follis Durkin (Matthew), Michael (Hillary), and 7 well loved grandsons Daniel III, Bailey, Jack, Wesley, Benjamin, Thomas and Charlie, and Dan's sister Margot Klein. Dan was predeceased by his parents and his brother Tom. A memorial mass in Dan's honor will be celebrated at 10:00 a. m. on Saturday, October 21st in the Beaumont Grosse Pointe Chapel. Age - 76

Susan Vallan, 76, passed away unexpectedly at her Grosse Pointe Farms home on Sunday, December 3, 2023. After enjoying her nightly piece of chocolate and a Coca Cola while watching the Game Show Network in her favorite chair, Sue closed her eyes and peacefully rejoined her husband of 50 years, Ronald, who pre-deceased her in 2020. Sue was born in Detroit on April 23, 1947 to Joseph and Marie Stenzel, who, along with two of her sisters, Joan and Ann, predeceased her. She is survived by her children Anthony "Tony" (Shelly), Lisa (Michael Francescutti), and Ronald. Sue was a proud grandmother to Madison (Ben Peters), Nick, Andrew, and Jake. Sue is also survived by her sister, Edna (the late John), brother-in-law, Dave (the late Ann), and many nieces & nephews. Sue was well loved by many friends and seven granddogs who adored her and the belly rubs & treats she gave freely. In addition to being a homemaker, Sue was the "First Lady" of Young Supply Company, accompanying her husband Ron as they hosted dozens of company parties and trips with employees and customers over the years. Live music and dancing were among Sue's favorites and she always lit up the room with her genuine smile and friendly conversation. Sue's family and friends were her priority. She took the role of being a mother seriously, always involved in activities and school functions. Over the years, she remained a mother and grandmother first and foremost, but also became a trusted best friend and continued source of welcomed wisdom & advice to her children and grandchildren. Birthdays, holiday celebrations, and family trips were a must, with details and menus planned months in advance. Sue loved showing her appreciation for others with kind words, gestures, and thoughtful gifts and cards. She cherished her friendships. Before breaking bread with family or friends, Sue enjoyed her signature cocktail - a Woodford Reserve served neat in a snifter glass with a side of ice and a lemon wedge. Sue knew what she liked and while she and her husband dined at some of the finest restaurants in the world, she preferred the comfort foods back at home. Mama Rosa's, Buddy's Pizza, The Original Pancake House, Big Boy, National Coney Island, and burgers at Irish Coffee were among her favorites. Cafe Epicure & Mediterraneo in Florida were other favorites as well as Da Eduardo Grosse Pointe, where she ate once a week at her table. Sue enjoyed dining out and talking with friends she'd see at her regular places, but would also want it noted that she was an excellent cook and made countless meals for family and friends to enjoy. Home cooked Italian meals were a family favorite. Time in the sun was a must. While in Florida for the winter months, "Wine-Down Wednesdays" at the pool was one of her favorite traditions. Sue enjoyed preparing her famous sausage & peppers dish to share with her girlfriends during their weekly gathering filled with stories & laughs. Daily word games played online, with her sister and other friends, was something that Sue enjoyed. Euchre games were serious business and Sue was the one to beat. Slot machines, whether played on her iPad at home, or in-person at a casino, were another favorite pastime. Sue and the video poker machines at The Wynn in Las Vegas had a friendly but ongoing love-hate relationship. In the last few years, Sue looked forward to making her weekly picks in a Pick Six football pool that she played in with over 700 other people. Despite knowing little about football, and never doing well in the pool, Sue's competitive and determined nature finally paid off in the end. A couple of days after Sue's passing, her family and friends couldn't help but smile when they saw that Sue correctly picked all six teams before she passed and posthumously won the weekly pool! A longtime family friend pointed out that this was Sue's way of letting all of her family and friends know that she truly died a "winner" and that, instead of being sad, we should celebrate her wonderful life. Services will take place on Saturday, December 16, 2023. In state 9:30 AM until the 10AM funeral mass at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church - 157 Lake Shore Rd, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236 In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.Show more

Rosemary Green

Rosemary Green

Age - 74

December 3, 2023

On November 25, 2023, Rosemary Green got her wings to walk with the angels after a long battle with respiratory and other health issues. She was 74. Though Rosemary's health was failing for years, few people knew the extent to which she struggled. Her determination and indomitable spirit kept her pushing through the pain. When anyone else would have given up, Rosemary stayed strong. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly looks like. Rosemary was born March 27, 1949 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Mary and Bert Siwak and grew up in Warren, Michigan. It was there that she met and married Danny Green and shared 54 years together in Roseville, Michigan until his passing in September, 2021. During that time, they raised three children, and with open and loving arms, agreed to raise their beloved granddaughter Selina Rain until her passing in January, 2021. The family takes comfort in knowing that Rosemary, Danny and Selina are together again. One of the many ideals Rosemary cherished was her love for babies. Being a mom was everything to her and she delighted in taking care of her little ones, babysitting her grandchildren, watching them play in the swimming pool, going camping, and generally being surrounded by family and friends. While raising her children she was an Avon and Party Lite Representative for many years. In her spare time, she enjoyed perusing cookbooks for inspiration and trying new recipes. Later in life she enjoyed watching the cooking shows and had fun ordering from the home shopping networks. For entertainment, it was always playing cards or games with family and friends. It was not uncommon, while her parents were alive, to play well into the night and early morning hours in between breaking for snacks and conversation. Card playing kept her mind sharp and she was an expert at remembering the rules for the many cards games enjoyed by all. Never once did Rosemary turn her back on her family or someone in need even during the most troubling of family times. In her heart of hearts, she knew there was hope for those who could not see their way through the maze of life's challenges. For that, she is applauded for never giving up on a loved one or surrendering to thoughts of letting go. The simple truth is that the strength of a mother's love endured. During the last few years as her health declined, and had to face the loss of both her granddaughter and husband, she remained strong. She was generous with her love, kind, thoughtful and appreciative even during her most difficult days. Rosemary is survived by her adult children, Melissa Tune, Jeffrey Green, Danielle Pacitto, sister Nancy Franks, brother James Siwak, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family invites you to join in a Celebration of Life at 3 PM on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Triumphant Cross Lutheran Church in St. Clair Shores, Michigan.Show more
