Mr. Herman Reid Sides Jr. , fondly known as Reid by friends and loved ones, transitioned from this life on November 13, 2023, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Born on September 25, 1950, to the late Herman Reid Sides Sr. and Betty Lyerly Sides, of Kannapolis, North Carolina, Reid lived a fruitful life characterized by generosity, kindness, and friendliness. Having battled Alzheimer's disease with courage and strength, he leaves a legacy of resilience. Reid is survived by his loving sister, Myra Sides Combs of Kannapolis, North Carolina; his devoted son, Lieutenant Colonel Wesley Reid Sides (USAF); his cherished daughter-in-law, Dana Duffy Sides; and his adored grandchildren, Wyatt Reid Sides and Hadley Rhys Sides all currently residing in Corpus Christi, Texas. These family members will forever remember Reid's warmth, laughter, and wise advice. Their memories of him will continue to light up their lives, serving as a source of strength and inspiration. Reid graduated from A. L. Brown High School, in Kannapolis in 1968, where he was known for cruising Idiot's Circle in his 1965 Ford Falcon, usually enroute to either Whataburger or Gary's Barbecue. Later, he was fortunate enough to complete his Bachelor of Arts degree from Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina in 1972 despite the numerous hours he spent at Al's Nighthawk Cafe. Hand-in-hand with his fun-loving nature, Reid was an instinctual learner who was always striving to attain new knowledge; these traits he passed on to his offspring and loved ones. His intuition, coupled with his friendly character, served him well in his professional career which spanned nearly five decades. In his professional life, Reid epitomized dedication and integrity, building a successful career in banking where he served for over forty years. His vocation was one in which he thrived, having started from the lowest position by repossessing cars in downtown Charlotte for First Union, to his retirement as IronStone Bank President, an institution he established in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. His colleagues admired him for his innovative problem-solving skills, work ethic, and commitment to bringing the best out of his team. Following his retirement from banking, Reid further solidified his reputation in the financial world by earning his real estate license, helping homebuyers throughout St. Johns County, Florida. No matter the industry, Reid was always a valued member of the community in which he worked and whose service will be remembered. Reid embodied a perfect blend of charm and charisma, alongside his professional commitments. Apart from his distinguished career, Reid indulged in a variety of interests that added value to his life. An avid golfer, he loved playing rounds of golf with his son Wes, creating memories and inspiring in him a passion for the game. Truly, however, his happiest place was on the beach: feet-in-the-sand and beer-in-his-hand. He spent many youthful summers at his beloved Myrtle Beach with Saturday nights reserved for shag dancing at The Pad on Ocean Drive, while his later years he spent parked on the sands of Ponte Vedra Beach, oftentimes looking for elusive shark's teeth. He was a big believer in enjoying every moment and also made sure to incorporate travel into his life. From Ireland, Italy and Germany, to the Caribbean, and even to far flung places like Australia, Thailand, and Japan, Reid never missed an opportunity to experience new cultures. . . and especially food and wine! The memories he made were ones he often shared with family and close friends, inspiring them to explore the rich cultures of our world. Reid was a man of character and a gentleman, frequently described as kind, friendly, and exceedingly generous by those who had the privilege of knowing him. His tempered yet warm personality touched those who got to know him well. He greeted everyone with a smile and always treated those he encountered with kindness, respect, and dignity. The life of Reid - an adored grandfather, loving father and brother, brilliant business professional, and remarkable human - was full of laughter, love, and lived experiences that inspired those around him. His kindness, enthusiasm for life, and enduring spirit will be remembered by all who had the fortune to meet him. Although Mr. Herman Reid Sides Jr. is no longer physically with us, his spirit and legacy remain engraved in our hearts and memories, serving as a beacon of love, strength, and resilience. Here's to Reid - a life well-lived and well-loved.Show more
