Dan Paul Hornby was born on July 30, 1952 in Rapid City, South Dakota to Harry Raymond Hornby and Elizabeth (Betty) Reber Hornby. Dan grew up in Rapid City where he attended elementary school and graduated from Rapid City Central High School in 1970. He played the saxophone in the school's marching band and has always loved music. Dan's father, Harry and grandfather Floyd Hornby were carpenters by trade and Dan decided to follow in their footsteps. He signed up for the Carpentry Union Apprenticeship Program in 1971 and graduated as a Journeymen in 1975. Dan met Cheryl Ann Ferbrache in 1974 and their romance began early in 1975. They fell in love and married on May 1, 1976 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City. Together with the help of family and friends, they built a new home and lived in Rapid City where they welcomed their first daughter, Heidi Marie, who was born on August 19, 1980. After the recession in the late 1970's they decided to sell their house and move to North Idaho the summer of 1981. They made North Idaho their new home and built another "littler house in the big woods" which was later moved onto property they bought on Curtis Creek. On October 1, 1982 they welcomed their second daughter Rachel Rose. Dan and Cheryl were baptized in the Pend Oreille River and joined the Edgemere Seventh-Day Adventist Church in the summer of 1982. Dan served in the church for many years as deacon and worship and children's music leader. Together he and Cheryl were Pathfinder Youth Leaders during the 1990's. Dan taught several of the young people in the valley to play the guitar. In his later years, Dan enjoyed playing music with a group of neighbors every week. Dan also helped build the new church on the Vay Road in the 1990's and again the addition of a beautiful sanctuary in the last few years. Dan was involved in several mission-building projects. Dan was the kind of man that loved to help others. He was never too busy to lend a helping hand to help family, a neighbor, or even a stranger. Dan's love for God and for his fellowmen overflowed in his life to all those who knew him. Dan was a good husband and father who dearly loved his children and grandchildren. Never once did we ever question his love for us. He was a good provider and builder. He loved his garden and orchard. He loved to watch thingsgrow and was very interested in the healing properties of common plants and weeds (as we call them). Dan loved animals, his favorite pets as a boy were a dog named "Tuffy" and a horse named "Stormy". He later had a horse he named "Smokey" and enjoyed many horse rides with his two daughters and many other friends. We had several dogs over the years and he loved each one. One of Dan's favorite pastimes was getting out in the great outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing. The thing he liked most was taking his grandchildren fishing and taking walks through the woods. He loved to hike and explore this beautiful place where he lived. Dan was one of those men who gave you no doubt as to what he believed. He knew and worshiped our great Creator, God in Heaven and loved his Son, Jesus Christ who lived and died for our sins. Dan was a true Christian believer and witness to all those around him. Dan is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl -- his daughters Heidi Marie Meckle and Rachel Rose Lindsey, sons-in-law Marciano Meckle and Brandon Lindsey. Five grandchildren Rylan Dean and Lilyann Elizabeth Meckle and Kekuhi Rose, Kahea Calvin and Puana Anne-Marie Lindsey. He is also survived by his younger brother Tom Hornby and sisters-in-law Lana Hornby and Marcia Krebs. Nephews and nieces Travis and Shauna Hornby and Sunny and Lindsay Hornby and their children, as well as his niece, Aleta Dotson and her children. A sister and brother-in-law, Gary and Debbie (Ferbrache) Hicks and nephew Eli Hicks. Dan was preceded in death by his father and mother, Harry and Betty Hornby and his older brother Ben Hornby. Dan passed away in the garden that he loved, held in the loving arms of his wife, Cheryl, on April 9, 2023 - Easter Sunday surrounded with the love of all his family -- completing a beautiful "Circle of Love" here on earth, and as he died on resurrection day, so we believe he will be raised up when Jesus calls his name on that great glorious resurrection morning soon to come.
