In Loving Memory of Chuck On Gee, May 6, 1947 - November 29, 2023
The passing of Chuck On Gee (Zhu Zhuo An ) on November 29, 2023 at the age of 76, in Phoenix, Arizona, marks the end of a remarkable journey that touched the lives of many. Chuck's legacy, rooted in family,
education, and culinary artistry, is a testament to a life well-lived.
Born on May 6, 1947, in Toisan, Guangdong, China, Chuck began his journey as a village high school teacher fostering a love for learning that would become a guiding force throughout his life. His
intellectual pursuits led him to Foshan University (Fo Shan Ke Xue Ji Zhu Xue Yuan ), where he immersed
himself in the world of mathematics, laying the foundation for a future marked by curiosity and
academic passion.
In 1979, Chuck immigrated to the United States, embarking on a new chapter that saw him
leave a lasting impact on the culinary landscape. From the kitchens of the Great Wall
Restaurant and Tangs Cathay, to the founding of his own establishments, New North China and
Ming and Gee, Chuck's culinary expertise delighted countless patrons and left an enduring
impact on the restaurant industry. He continued to share his culinary artistry until his retirement
in 2010.
Chuck's love for teaching extended beyond formal education. Fondly remembered as a great
teacher by his younger brother John, Chuck's influence reached his own children, Elaine, Linda,
and Ronald, whom he tutored in mathematics. His dedication to education and family values
shaped the lives of those he touched.
Post-retirement, Chuck embraced his love for food and travel. Exploring the diverse culinary
offerings of the San Francisco Bay Area became one of his cherished pastimes, creating
memories that added flavor to his retirement years. Chuck's wanderlust led him and his family
on road trips across the western United States, visiting iconic locales such as the Grand
Canyon, Lake Powell, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco. Later, he embarked on a
memorable cruise to Mexico and trip to Hawaii with friends Ellen and Jacob Yu.
Within the Chinese restaurant community, Chuck found a sense of camaraderie and joy.
Attending banquets, winning prizes, and engaging in friendly competition through bowling and
ping pong brought him immense happiness.
Chuck was preceded in death by his brothers, Kenneth and John, who undoubtedly welcomed
him with open arms into the realm beyond. The memories of shared laughter, trials, and
triumphs with his brothers became a part of the rich fabric of his life.
He is survived by his brother, Paul, sister, Judy, and a loving family--his wife, Yip Pen, and their
children, who carry forward the legacy of a man whose passions touched every aspect of his
rich and fulfilling life.
As we bid farewell to Chuck On Gee, let us remember not only the hard working restaurateur
and dedicated teacher but also the loving husband, father, and friend who brought joy and
warmth to the hearts of many. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the flavors of the
