Evelyn grew up in Mount Angel Oregon where she was born, she went on to raise her two children Donna Banks-Newman and Rodena Champney in Portland, Oregon. Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Margret Hemshorn along with her husband Grover Leon Smith Jr.; Evelyn was her daughter’s hero and their strength. Evelyn is survived by her twin brother Everett Hemshorn and her brother Al Hemshorn, along with her two daughters Donna and Rodena. The funeral will be held at Omega Funeral and Cremation on March 11th along with a committal service at Willamette National.

Larry Kaner 1931 - 2024Dr. Larry Kaner passed away at 92 in Portland, Oregon, on March 1st, 2024. Born SeymourLawrence Kaner in a Manhattan hospital on October 4, 1931, Larry lived in theBronx, New York, with his parents, David and Bertha Kaner. When he was eight,they moved to Superior, Wisconsin, where his father owned a small grocery store.After attending public schools in Superior, Larry completed his undergraduatework and earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.While there, he met his wife, Betty Payne, who he married in 1955. The Kanersremained enthusiastic Badger fans.In 1957, after his medical internship at St Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, Larry took a“temporary” position with a family practice group in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, whileexpecting to report for duty after being drafted to serve as a physician in theKorean War. When the war ended shortly thereafter, he and Betty decided toremain in Two Rivers, where Larry continued his family practice for the next 40years. During that time, Larry and Betty raised three children, Rob, Ric and Lisa,and became an integral part of the community with many close friends. In 1962,Larry and two other local doctors founded the Two Rivers Clinic. Larry was ahighly regarded provider of medical care and advice to the families around TwoRivers, serving 20 years as the community health officer and the certified medicaldoctor for two local nuclear power plants. During his career, Larry delivered morethan 2000 babies.Larry was an active member of the B’nai B’rith and the Synagogue Anshe PoaleZedek in Manitowoc. He was also a member of the Two Rivers Elks Lodge. Morerecently, Larry was a member of the Beth El Congregation in Sheboygan.Upon Larry’s retirement, he and Betty spent winters in Scottsdale, AZ, where theydeveloped another close group of friends. Larry was an accomplished bridgeplayer and enjoyed playing blackjack at the casinos (mostly at $5 tables). Hegolfed with regularity into his 90s. As friends and family knew well, Larry had alarge repertoire of jokes and stories that endeared him to many. In 2023, Larryand Betty moved to Portland, Oregon, where they joined the community at RoseSchnitzer Manor.Larry was proudest of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments.Robert is a pulmonologist and Professor of Clinical Medicine and Clinical GeneticMedicine at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City where he lives with his wifeEllen, a cardiologist. Richard is a professor of materials chemistry at UCLA andlives with his wife Sara, a child psychiatrist, in Pacific Palisades, CA. Lisa retiredfrom her career as a business litigation lawyer in Portland, Oregon, where shelives with her partner, Peter Glade, also a retired lawyer. Between them, thethree produced seven grandchildren who have grown into productive adulthood,proving one of Larry’s favorite aphorisms: “Apples don’t fall far from the tree.”Larry’s wisdom, good humor and kindness will be missed by family and friends.He is survived by his wife Betty, children Robert and Ellen, Ric and Sara, Lisa andPeter, and grandchildren David Kaner and his husband Brennan O’Rear, JolieKaner, Jordan Edelson, Fara Kaner, Rhody Kaner and her spouse Jake Palanker,Zoe Edelson and Gilon Kaner.Services will be held at Ahavai Shalom Cemetery on Monday, March 4th, at 3:00 PM.Remembrances can be made to: the Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association;Lester Public Library, Two Rivers, WI; The Neshotah Charitable Foundation, Inc.,Two Rivers, WI; The Jewish National Fund.

Samira (Teeny) Bitar

Samira (Teeny) Bitar passed away to be in the arms of Jesus on February 23, 2024. She was 86 and passed peacefully in Portland, Oregon. She will be missed. She and Victor Bitar came to the USA in 1964 with nothing but a couple of suitcases and built a life and family in pursuit of the American dream and living a Christian life in a free country. Samira received her Bachelor's degree from the American University of Beirut and then worked in the US for many years as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in a variety of hospitals. She worked retail for many of her later years, retiring from Macy's at the age of 80. Her commitment to excellence extended beyond her career, as she became a loving mother to three children, Pete, Julie and Dan, and proud grandmother to seven grandchildren : Nick, Ella, Ava, Nayla, Sam, Anisa and Eden. She loved gardening and cooking, becoming a professional chef after going to the Horst Mager Culinary Institute in the late 80's. Samira was survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Victor Bitar, her 3 children, Pete Bitar (and wife, Lisa Bitar), Julie Zook (and husband, Ryan Zook), and Daniel Bitar ( and wife, Monica Bitar), 7 grandchildren.. Samira was preceded in death by her parents, Nassif and Jamily Teeny and siblings, Shafiah, Elias, Jean, Joseph, Mounira and Sameer. Many nieces and nephews in the USA, Canada, Bolivia and Lebanon survive her and mourn her loss. She was always "spicy" and loved to laugh. Thank you to all who knew her and were part of her life. As we mourn her passing, let us also celebrate the remarkable life she led, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and faith. Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Happy Valley Baptist Church, 14095 SE King Rd, Happy Valley OR 97086. Left to cherish her memory are her beloved son, DJ; her mother, Tonya; her stepfather, Delbert; her siblings, Duane, Christopher, Brandon, Cheyanne, Breanna, and Ashley; her maternal grandparents, Toni and Mitch; her sister-in-law, Farres; and her extended family, including aunts Pamela and Shirley, uncle Herman, and cousin Deanna. She was welcomed into eternal rest by her father, Jonnie Jr., and her paternal grandparents, Johnnie Sr. and Katherine, along with her dear nephew, Wyatt. Rebecca's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, and she will be profoundly missed. Her legacy of love and joy will continue to live on through her family and friends.

Our beloved LaRonn Marcellus Allen passed away on February 3, 2024 at the age of 39. LaRonn Allen was born in Portland, Oregon on October 12, 1984, to the proud parents Brenda Marie and Ronald James Allen, both preceding him in death. LaRonn completed his primary education in the Portland, Oregon school district. He was known for being a protective loving family man. LaRonn will be remembered for his amazing gentleman-like characteristics. He had a very caring soul and was willing to help those in need. LaRonn possessed a strong work ethic that was unmatched. He held a variety of jobs that cater to various parts of our community. He enjoyed spending time with his elders throughout the neighborhood. In his spare time you could find him riding bikes, fishing, playing sports such as (baseball, basketball, football, and chess). LaRonn found pleasure in the outdoors. He loved spending quality time with his friends while listening to music. LaRonn was known for purposely sharing love through his hugs and smiles. He had a very indigenous personality that left an impression on everyone he came into contact with. His original personality was led by his ability to think outside the box. LaRonn always led with love. One of his common expressions was “I Love You Cousin ” which left a warm feeling in the hearts of many. LaRonn Allen will be missed very much by family and friends, specifically for his star-like qualities and warm spirit. Dennis Havel Wolf, 65, of Portland, died in Portland Oregon on January 24, 2024. He was born in China Lake CA in 1958 to Verner and Marie Wolf; his father was in the Navy who retired in 1968 after relocating to Villa Park, IL, a suburb of Chicago. Dennis attended York High School in Elmhurst, IL and received his degree at Southeastern Illinois College. He was ambitious with an entrepreneurial spirit, working with his brother on inventions and software. He worked as a software developer for a time in Torrance before turning to investments. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his brother and sister, Vern Wolf and Lynn Wolf. He was a generous and kind person, dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed. His girlfriend’s name was Beverly James.

Charlotte Ruth Nordling

Charlotte Ruth (Brandt) Nordling was unexpectedly received into heaven on February 11, 2024, age 91 years, 9 months at her residence of Cherrywood Village in Portland, OR. Her death was due to COVID related weakness which precipitated a fall. She was born to Edward Albert and Alice Rose (Grauer) Brandt on May 11, 1932. She became God’s child by Holy Baptism on June 12, 1932 and confirmed into the Lutheran faith on June 18, 1944. Baptism and Confirmation both occurred at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sheridan, OR. Charlotte graduated from Sheridan High School (1949) and from Pacific Lutheran College (1953) with a bachelor’s of science in nursing.Charlotte loved being a nurse, starting off with clinical rotations at Emanuel hospital and helping to move into the then new Doernbecher hospital. She worked at Emanuel hospital for some time after marriage and then worked part time in skilled nursing and long- term care facilities for the remainder of her career. After retiring from the floor, she started her own podiatry business and made many people happy with her great foot care, while continuing to make friends and connections up and down the Willamette Valley. During retirement, her great joy was to road trip around the USA with her husband Don, visiting family and friends along the way. As travel ceased, she and Don would have a lot of fun playing the piano, violin and singing together.Charlotte was married to Don Gilbert Nordling on May 20, 1956 and was a faithful, loving spouse for 67 years, 8 months and 22 days. She was an attentive, loving wife and became his advocate during his decline. Their marriage was blessed with seven children. She loved being a mom, wanting her children to know Jesus as their loving Savior, and giving her children the gifts of education and music. She will be remembered by her children, grand-children and friends as a happy, sweet encourager, telling others of Jesus and his love for them. Her joy was teaching Sunday School and helping out with LWML and women’s bible studies, recognizing friends, family and God-children with letters and birthday greetings.Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents Edward Albert and Alice Rose (Grauer) Brandt, son Erich Joel Nordling, sister Evelyn (Brandt) DeJong and brother Vernon Brandt. She was survived by her husband Don Gilbert Nordling for 6 days prior to his death. She is survived by siblings Sharon (Lloyd) Willweber, Sarah Wilson, Nancy Lingenfelter, and Edward (Mary Lou) Brandt. Her surviving children are son John (Sara) Nordling, son Olaf (Christine) Nordling, daughter Kirsten (Paul) Birner, daughter Sonja Nordling, daughter Stephanie (Phillip) Brandt, and son Philip (Heidi) Nordling, and 11 grandchildren.The family acknowledge with great thanks the loving care and attention paid to Charlotte as a resident at Cherrywood/Royal Anne assisted living in Portland, OR by both the staff and her many friends at the facility.Funeral Service and reception 1 pm, March 9th, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 5520 NE Killingsworth St., Portland, OR 97218, with River View Cemetery handling arrangements.In lieu of flowers, please send a memorial to The Lutheran Hour.
