"It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Courtney, our beloved sister and friend to all whose lives she touched, on September 5, 2023. S. Courtney McCluney was born in Mecklenburg County, NC in 1965 and raised in Virginia Beach, VA. For the past several years she has called Memphis, TN her home. She loved fiercely, protected passionately, and had a wicked sense of humor. She often presented a tough exterior, but she was an extremely sentimental soul. She never met a stranger and never passed anyone without a smile or perhaps a detailed recap of a documentary she just watched. She was known for her unique sense of style and fashion from her high-end shoes to her extensive collection of sunglasses, watches, and snarky t-shirts. Courtney was a hard worker and from a very young age cared for people through her many years in the customer service industry. Her passions included cooking a good meal, enjoying fine libations, spending time with her fur babies, watching her favorite teams play football, writing songs, photography as well as being a lover of History. Courtney was predeceased by her parents, Richard Clark McCluney, Jr. and Jean Foushee McCluney as well as sister-in-law, Virginia B. McCluney. She is survived by her siblings, Richard McCluney, III, Kelly Shaner (Larry) and Scott McCluney (Sue). "Aunt Coco" will be missed by her beloved nieces and nephews Andrew McCluney, Phillip and Allison Shaner, and Taylor and Connor McCluney. Her loss will also be deeply felt by her loving aunts, uncle and cousins. Those who knew her will remember her for her legendary humor, love to share a good story and compassion for others. In celebration of her life, take time to raise a glass and share your favorite Courtney story with those you love. If you would like to honor her memory, the family suggests memorial donations may be made to the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, the SPCA, or the Trevor Project. "

She was the first of four daughters born to Elsie Caldwell Burch, an accomplished equestrian, and Lucius E. Burch, Jr. , a lawyer, environmentalist, and political activist. Although Sarah lived her entire life in Memphis, she remained close to her family in Nashville and had many fond memories of summers and holidays visiting her grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Lucius E. Burch, at Riverwood, their historic home in Nashville, and at their summer mountain cottage in Beersheba Springs. Sarah attended the Hutchison School and the Holton Arms School in Washington, DC. In 1956 she married John Gratz, a local radiologist, and they had four children during their almost thirty year marriage. Sarah was an active volunteer in the community, often through her membership in the Junior League, and over the years could be found giving tours at the Pink Palace Museum or working at a local day care center. She loved animals of all sorts and was known to come home with exotic family pets such as a kinkajou, an alligator, a porcupine, and snakes of all sorts. Sarah always said that her happiest memories were from when her children were young. She was a natural mother who loved having fun and playing pranks. Sarah was known for her dry wit and outgoing personality. She believed in the strength of family, of unconditional love, of making the best of whatever life handed you, and of not complaining or taking oneself too seriously. She spoke her mind without restraint and throughout her life served as a thoughtful advisor to many of those in her orbit, whether it be family, friends, neighborhood children, or the many who assisted her and became her support network in her final years. Sarah leaves behind three children - Sarah Gratz Land of Memphis, Lucy Gratz Weymouth of Washington, DC, and John Gratz III of Boulder, CO. She is predeceased by her child Ashley Cooper Gratz of anywhere she could travel. She is also survived by three grandchildren - Kristen Weymouth, Sarah Gratz, and Kelly Weymouth. Gary Meloni Sr

Gary Meloni Sr

Age - 83

December 2, 2023

"Gary Anthony Meloni, Sr. , passed away on November 27, 2023, at age 83. Born on October 31, 1940, in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, Gary spent his early years working (or playing) at his family's grocery store in Cardale, Pennsylvania. In high school, he was honored as an All-American football player. In 1959, after being recruited by several Division I universities, Gary accepted a full athletic scholarship to Memphis State University. When asked, why Memphis? He always laughed, "they had the prettiest girls. " Although Gary's football career at Memphis didn't go as planned, it was at the University that he met the "prettiest girl he had ever seen", Sandy Shanks Meloni. After dating for just two weeks, the young couple eloped at a chapel in Mississippi. When asked by their grandchildren where the chapel was located, neither could recall. It didn't matter because they were together on that day and for fifty-four wonderful years until her passing. In 2017, Gary married his lifelong friend, Ann McCarthy Meloni, and they spent many happy days together, traveling across the country. Gary spent decades coaching youth football in East Memphis, his positive impact fondly remembered by the men he coached. Gary was an avid golfer, a pastime he shared with his father, son, and grandsons. True to his Italian heritage, Gary loved to make "Meloni Italian Sausage" with his family. As an adopted son of Memphis, he also loved to smoke ribs and make his own bar-b-que sauce. Gary was known for his loving, kind, and accepting personality that always put people at ease. Professionally, Gary owned and operated an architectural metal firm. He loved his job, his company, and his customers - never willing to retire and barely ever slowing down. Even after the countless jobs he completed, his favorites were always commissions for his children and grandchildren. Gary is preceded in death by his wife, Sandy Meloni; daughter, Kim Meloni; mother, Nellie Meloni; father, Silvio Meloni; and brothers, Salvatore and Michael Meloni. He is survived by his wife, Ann Meloni; his son, Gary Meloni (Barbie); his daughter, Halle Meloni Whitlock (Derek); and his sister, Silvia Meloni. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, one great-grandson, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Thursday December 7, 2023, at 10:00 am at St. Michael Catholic Church, 3863 Summer Ave, Memphis, TN 38112. Reception to follow.
