Connie June Houseman-Riley, 52, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, September 8, 2023. She was born on May 16, 1971 in Cape May, New Jersey. She is survived by her daughter, Corey Chrislyn Riley and her fiance, Matthew Lyles; son, Christian Zachary Riley and his fiance, Sirena Richter; sister, Cheryl Breisch and her husband, Paul; parents, Walter Glen Houseman and Ruth Melonie Houseman; granddaughter, Katarina Riley; her "daughter", Meghan Ward and her husband Tad and their daughter, Eva Ward. Anna Page (Harris) Francis, 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. A native of Portsmouth, she was born on May 11, 1934 to the late Isaac and Elsie Harris. She is also predeceased by her daughter, Chandra Vaughan; three sisters, Elsie and husband Kenny Wright, Frances and husband Paul Hockenberry, and Mildred "Butch" Burgess; two brothers, Lloyd and wife Betty Harris and John and wife Joyce Harris. She is survived by her loving son, Kevin Francis and wife Angie; seven grandchildren, Taylor Vaughan (Meaghan), Courtney Kees (Chase), Max Vaughan, Stephanie Francis (Phillip), Zachary Francis (Alyssa), Jacob Francis (Alex), and Scottie Vaughan; four Great Grandchildren, Colby Vaughan, McKenna Vaughan, Anna June (AJ) Kees, and Alaya Francis; her brother-in-law James "Jim" Burgess; and several nieces and nephews. She surely loved her grandchildren and she will be truly missed. Anna graduated from Churchland High School in 1952 where she played Softball (co-captain) and Basketball. She went on to a long career at C&P Telephone, Bell Atlantic, and then AT&T as a telephone operator for many years. Afterwards, she was a telephone operator at Sears Greenbrier and QVC where she finally retired at the age of 84. She loved to socialize and spent many hours hanging out at the Pancake House, Westray's Diner, Shoney's, Chesapeake Square Mall food court and Hometown Diner with her many friends over the years. She spent many years in attendance of Pinecrest Baptist Church and then Grove Park Baptist Church. She spent almost the last five years at The Chamberlin on Ft. Monroe Hampton where she kept up her tradition of meeting new people and forming friendships with them. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 8, 2023 at 1 PM at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel officiated by Rev. Scott Pond. Alice Auston Hughes entered into eternal rest on November 23, 2023. Alice was born to the late Edmond and Lucy Auston on May 14, 1926 in the rural community of Norfleet, which islocated just outside of Scotland Neck, North Carolina. The eldest of eight, she was feisty, strong-willed, charismatic and determined. She exhibited those traits throughout the entirety of her 97 year life. In spite of challenges associated with sharecropping, Alice graduated from Brawley High School in Scotland Neck, North Carolina at the age of 16. Shortly thereafter she moved to Suffolk, Virginia where she worked and selflessly sent money back home to help her family. While living in Suffolk, she met her beloved husband, Elvin A. Hughes. They relocated to Norfolk, Virginia in 1951. She worked as a Nurse's Aide at Norfolk Community Hospital until becoming a full-time Funeral Director and Office Manager for E A Hughes Funeral Home in 1952. She worked tirelessly at the family business until the building experienced a lightning strike in 2005. Alice accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Saint Stephens Baptist Church in Scotland Neck, NC. A woman of faith, she always had a church affiliation. She joined Metropolitan Baptist Church while in Suffolk, and after moving to Norfolk, she attended Oakwood Chapel Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ before joining Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. She was a founding member of the Philadelphia Fellowship (Baptist), led by founding pastor Dr. Ronnie D. Joyner. She was a dutiful church worker as she sang in the Senior Choir, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School classes, served as a Deaconess, and was a member of the Missionary Board. She loved her church family unconditionally and welcomed any and every opportunity to teach and bear witness to the goodness of God. Alice is pre-deceased by her husband of 47 years, Elvin A. Hughes, Sr. , her parents Lucy and Edmond Auston, and siblings Emma Anthony, Pat Griffin, James "Peter" Alston, and Lee Haywood Alston. She leaves to cherish her memory four children: Elvin A. (Bernetia) Hughes, Jr. , Everard A. (Peggy) Hughes, Sr. , Elveta H. Phillips, and Esther A. Hughes; threesiblings: Joan Smith, Carrie Hardy, and Bettye (James) Newkirk; a bonus son: Tyrance Alston Hughes (Marty); ninegrandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends, including her dear friend and confidante, Lois Sharp. CHESAPEAKE - Josephine Ramsey Preedy, 78, of 2725 Lake Ridge Crossing went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 24, 2023. She was born on November 18, 1945 in Manchester, Kentucky to the late Millard Robinson and Julia Jones Ramsey. She worked for IBM in Kentucky in her youth then worked for many years as a meat merchandiser for Farm Fresh Stores. She later retired from QVC. Josephine was a talented musician who played piano by ear and sang at Greenbriar Presbyterian Church where her father was a Minister. She was a beautiful person with strong faith in God who would do anything for her family and friends. She had an uncanny ability to light up a room with her presence. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters; Grace Rebecca Ramsey, Deborah Ann Miniard, Ica Hulda Carey and Donna Sue Burton. Those left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Julia Aline and Latricia Ann Bailey. Their father, George Earl Preedy III and Latricia's children's father, Carl "Chipper" Stanley Bailey Jr. will remember her fondly. She will be missed immensely by her two grandsons and their children's mothers; Carl Stanley Bailey III, Staci Nicole Bailey, Andrew Austin Bailey, and Tiffany Michelle Parfitt. She was blessed to have four great grandchildren; Carl S. Bailey IV, Andrew Austin Bailey Jr. , Lucas Randall Bailey and Gracie Cole Bailey. She also has many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
