Olean- Clifford Earl Lucas March 11, 1935 – August 14, 2023 Clifford E. Lucas, 88, passed away Monday, August 14, 2023 at Cuba Memorial Hospital. Clifford was born March 11, 1935 in Olean, NY. He was the son of the Preston L. and Lucy (McLauglin) Lucas. After graduating from Olean High School in 1953, he followed in his father’s footsteps and began work at Clark Brothers/Dresser Industries. Through the company’s co-op program, he attended the University of Cincinnati where he graduated with a Bachelors of Science in engineering. He continued at the company as a mechanical engineer until 1974. On November 28, 1964 he married Donna Taylor of Olean, NY, who predeceased him on May 26, 2010. In 1974 the family relocated to Emmaus, Pa and he began the next chapter of his career as a mechanical engineer in the L. N. G. division of Air Products and Chemicals in the Trexlertown, PA headquarters where he continued to work until his retirement in 2001. Clifford found a second chance at love when he returned to his home town of Olean, NY and married Maxine (Amore) Miller on December 28, 2013. They shared a happy decade together until she predeceased him on August 6, 2023. Clifford was an active member of First Baptist Church of Olean, both in his youth and after returning to Olean in 2013. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church of Olean, NY, and a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Emmaus, PA. He loved singing as a bass in the choir and volunteered in many various roles at each of the churches as well. Surviving are: Daughters, Heidi (Jeff) Cleveland and Jenny Lynn Lucas; granddaughter Taylor Elizbeth Cleveland; sisters, Shirley DeGroff-Ratts, Kathryn Heinz, Margaret Shultz, and Willarane Sears, Sisters-in-law, Dorothy Lucas and Marsha Reynolds; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Clifford was predeceased by his first wife of 46 years, Donna Taylor Lucas; his second wife of 10 years, Maxine Miller Lucas; brothers Preston L. "Roy" Lucas and Billie D. Lucas. Virginia R. Thropp Allegany, NY Virginia R. Thropp, 94, of 14 W. Main St. , joined her beloved husband and son in eternal life on Monday (November 27, 2023). Born September 20, 1929 in Cuba, NY, she was the daughter of Merle and Ethel Milgate Harvey. On June 30, 1951 in Olean, she married Charles E. Thropp, Jr. who predeceased her May 3, 1983. Virginia loved raising her family of 5 children, and also worked at several businesses over the years. Prior to her marriage she was employed by the former K-Bar Cutlery in Olean. She was later employed by the former Acme Electric Co. in Allegany. For years she worked alongside her husband on his oil leases and refurbished rental properties in Allegany and Olean. Virginia also enjoyed working with her family in their greenhouse, CAL BAN GREENHOUSES in Allegany, planting, growing, and tending to and selling flowers and vegetables. Anyone who had the pleasure of being around her remembers her smile, sincere kindness, quick wit, and keen sense of humor right up until the end. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren in later years. Listening to country music, creating her own homemade wines, flower gardening, and knitting/crocheting, aphgans, scarfs and baby blankets kept her busy over the years. And feeding stray cats! She leaves behind 4 children, Charles E. Thropp, III of Allegany, David (Rhonda) Thropp of Allegany, Cindy (William) Sorokes of Olean, and Mary (James) Nannery of Marlboro, MA; 6 grandchildren, David Thropp, Jr. , Jeffrey (Holly) Thropp, William (Emily) Sorokes, Jr. , Christopher Sorokes, Jennifer (Evan) Hopkins, and Madison Nannery; 6 great-grandchildren, Monica Sorokes, Christian Hopkins, Kaetlyn Hopkins, Caleb Hopkins, Alex Sorokes, and Henry Sorokes; 1 sister Margie VanBuren of Olean, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son Joseph Thropp in 1985; a great-granddaughter Trinity Thropp, and 4 siblings Helen Rogers, Merle Harvey, Kay Hardy, and Joann Lee. The family will receive friends on Friday (December 1, 2023) from 10am until 11am at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd. , Olean. A funeral service will begin at 11am in the funeral home. Rev. Adam Stein, pastor of Creekside Chapel in Allegany, will officiate. Burial will follow in Allegany Cemetery. Arlene W. Mall Allegany, NY Arlene W. Mall, 82, of 3723 Karl Rd. , went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday (November 26, 2023) at her home. Born September 27, 1941 in Buffalo, she was the daughter of Rev. Albert and Eleanor Trank Williams. Her father was a well-known Baptist church planter and pastor in the PA, NY and NJ areas having last settled in Allegany in 1986. On June 7, 1969 at Faith Baptist Church in Fairless Hills, PA she married Rev. Michael P. Mall who survives. Arlene was a graduate of Lockport High School and then attended Baptist Bible Seminary (now Davis College) in Johnson City, NY. She continued her studies at Baptist Bible College (now Clarks Summit University) in Clarks Summit, PA. She ministered throughout her life in many different ways, first by teaching Sunday school starting at the age of 12, and later utilized her talents and training as a musician and teacher. When her father was active in ministry, she sometimes would sing during his local television network and radio station broadcasts. She was multilingual, having studied German, and taught Sunday School in Spanish in Philadelphia, PA. She ministered alongside her husband Mike as they traveled to do missionary work. While they were serving as missionaries in NYC from 1976 to 1979 she used her Chinese speaking ability to teach God's word. She was also a gifted vocalist and studied opera at the Chicago Academy of Music during which time she met her husband to be. Those who listened to her sing God's praises were blessed. She had a lifelong love of helping others and serving the Lord. She enjoyed ministering to the Spiritual needs of children through teaching in several Christian Day Schools throughout NY and Pa. She and her husband had also written their own Vacation Bible School material which they used to minister in many churches throughout the Northeast. Arlene enjoyed other interests outside of ministry by crocheting, especially afghans, entertaining in her home, and participating in community theater while living in DuBois, PA in the 1990's. In DuBois she also worked for radio station WDBA, now a part of Family Life Network. A job she absolutely loved and was well-suited for was as "Lady Liberty" for Liberty Tax in Olean from 2007-2012. She leaves behind her husband of 54 years; 4 sons, Noel "Matt" Mall of Allegany, Michael Paul Lee Mall II of Cherry Hill, NJ, Daniel Albert Williams Mall of Allegany, and David Jonathan Mall of Kingston, PA, and 6 granddaughters, including Rayna, Karis, Lydia, and Eliana, all of Cherry Hill, NJ. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister Peggy Louise Williams in 1969. The family will receive friends on Sunday (December 3, 2023) from 2:30pm to 4:00pm at the Five Mile Baptist Church, 3624 Five Mile Rd. , Allegany. A funeral service will begin at 4pm in the church. Deacon Tom Potter will officiate. Following the service, light refreshments will be offered in the fellowship hall. Burial will be in Five Mile Cemetery, Allegany on Monday (December 4, 2023) at 10am. As blue was Arlene's favorite color, if you like, you may wear something blue in remembrance of her. Olean- Hazel Mary Grimes Hakes Todd passed away unexpectedly Thursday (November 23, 2023) at her home. Born August 11, 1944, in London, England, she was the daughter of Daniel and Irene Martin Grimes. At 18 months old she traveled with her family from London to Ellis Island on the Queen Mary. Mrs. Todd was a graduate of Olean High School. She worked as a bus driver for Cattaraugus County Project Head Start in Olean for 40 years until her retirement in 2009. She was an active member of Harvest Field Ministries in Olean and would often volunteer for their soup kitchen. Mrs. Todd was also a volunteer at the Olean Senior Center. In her free time, she enjoyed knitting, sewing, roller-skating, watching her English shows, and spending time with her family. She is survived by her sister Jane (Robert) Keenan of Hinsdale ; 3 children, Jodi Kunselman of Olean, Rhonda Lewis of Olean, and Carl(Christine) Hakes of Huron, TN. ; her grandchildren Shelbi Work of Olean, Garrett Kunselman of Olean, Chelsey Lewis of Olean, Mary Lewis of Olean, Brandon (Jamie) Hakes of Cottondale, AL, Charles (Linette) Hakes of Lobelville, TN, Jonathan (LaVie-en) Hakes of Lexington, TN, and Anthony (Brianna) Hatzell of Olean; 15 great-grandchildren and a great aunt Evelynn June Young of Allegany. She was predeceased by a son-in-law Bill Kunselman. Friends will be received Wednesday (November 29, 2023) from 5 -7pm at the Casey, Halwig, and Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 West State Road, Olean. Dorothea M. "Dottie" Flynn Olean, NY Dorothea M. "Dottie" Flynn, 86, of 125 S. 5th St. , passed away Thursday (November 16, 2023) after a long and beautiful life. Born November 20, 1936 in Boston, MA, she was the daughter of Charles W. and Marion J. Clifford Foran. On September 21, 1957 in South Boston, MA she married Walter S. "Walt" Flynn who predeceased her August 13, 2010. Dottie graduated from South Boston (MA) High School in 1955. As a mother raising 6 children, she kept very busy as a den leader for the Cub Scouts and as a leader for Girl Scouts and Brownies in Sepulveda, CA. She also held many PTA positions at Langdon Ave. School in California, including that of treasurer. As a resident of Olean, she was a member of St. Bonaventure Church and was very active in its former parochial school. She was a real estate agent for Century 21 and Southern Tier Realty Co. in Olean prior to her retirement. She was also a member of the Cattaraugus County Association of Realtors having served on its Board of Directors. She is survived by 2 sons and 3 daughters, Kathleen Kirby of Akron, OH, Walter S. Flynn, III of Westchester, PA, Maureen Flynn-Bretzin of Olean, Michael Flynn, Sr. of Olean, and Colleen M. Flynn of Greenwich, CT; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; 1 brother Jack Foran of Tewksbury, MA; 1 sister Kathy Middleton of Hudson, MA and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son Patrick Michael Flynn in 2007, and a sister Marilyn Wright. No services are planned at this time. Allegany-Gregory Morris Brown "Father, Grandfather & Friend" We are heartbroken to announce that Gregory Morris Brown, 68 years old, passed away on Monday November 11, 2023. Greg was born on December 14, 1954 in Chicago, Illinois to parents Lellie and Ralph Brown. Greg and his brother Ralph and mother Lellie lived in Coral Gables, Florida where he spent his childhood. Greg spent his summers in Chattanooga, Tennessee with his beloved grandparents and has many relatives in that area to this day that will miss him dearly. Greg was a graduate of Coral Gables Academy in 1973. After moving to New York City with his mother they subsequently settled in Olean. Olean is where he would marry Karen Manners and start a family and career. He was employed at Dresser-Rand/Siemens as a machinist for 42 years having retired just 6 years ago. Greg was happiest when he was outdoors. He loved to fish growing up in Florida and always fished with his grandfather as a young boy. He passed that joy on by fishing with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman he enjoyed skiing, hunting, fishing, and riding four wheelers. He was a friend to all, enjoying just talking with people, hearing their stories, and enjoying their company. He treasured relationships with his friends and family and would always do anything to help someone in need. Greg’s sense of humor was unmatched. People were always smiling and laughing in his company. Greg was lighthearted and always saw the good in situations. Words can’t express how much he will be missed. He is predeceased by his beloved mother, Lellie J. Morris, and father Ralph I. Brown. He leaves behind his brother Ralph (Joan) Brown Jr. of Flintstone, Georgia, Karen Manners of Olean, daughter Jennifer Cunningham (Matthew) and son Keith Brown (Amber) both of Austin, Texas. He also leaves behind loving grandchildren, Noah Brown of Portville, Emily, Caroline Cunningham, Holly and Halen Brown of Austin, Texas. Susan A. Little Olean, NY Susan A. Little, 76, of 417 Paragon Ave. , passed away Monday (November 13, 2023) at Absolut Care of Allegany after a brief illness. Born April 3, 1947 in Oswego, she was the daughter of John and Mary Lynch Little. She married James D. "Jim" Beach who predeceased her January 5, 2008. Susan was raised in Nyack where she attended St. Ann's Parochial School and graduated from Nyack High School. She received her undergraduate degree and her master's degree, both in English, from St. Bonaventure University. She later earned a master's degree in counseling while residing in Maine. She began her career in 1970 as an English and Spanish teacher for Allegany High School. For years leading up to her retirement in 2004, she taught 10th grade English and public speaking classes. She served as chair of the English department, as a class advisor, and as a yearbook advisor. Teaching was her first love, and she strove to give her students an impactful learning experience. Susan was an avid reader and enjoyed her cats. She also loved vacationing at the Beach House in Ft. Myers, FL. She is survived by 2 sisters Kathi (Jim) Bradley of Cuba and Meg (Tim) Koen of Land O' Lakes, FL; 2 brothers Kevin (Beth) Little of Portville and Jon (Jackie) Little of The Villages, FL, and several nieces and nephews. Also holding a special place in her heart are close friends, Bill Fancher and Ken Bailey, both of Olean. At Susan's request, there are no scheduled services. Cassidy of Rogers Road, Allegany and more formerly of 1699 Park Ave. passed away on Friday, November 10, 2023 at the Wellsville Manor. Gertrude was born March 10, 1931 in Cuba and was the daughter of Elmer and Violet Rose Carney Giles. On March 20, 1951 in Florida she married Grant Cassidy Sr. who predeceased her on December 17, 2008. Gertrude enjoyed collecting porcelain dolls, watching TLC movies, murder mysteries but most of all she looked forward to receiving phone calls from her children. Gertrude is survived by; 4 children, Linda D. (Pete) Beardsey of York, SC, Karen S. (Bob) Powers of Kings Mountain, NC, Randy L. (Kim) Cassidy of Allegany and Lary D. (Sue) Cassidy of Olean; 12 grandchildren, Jamie, Cary, Niki, Chris, Bobby, Russell, Randy Jr. , Stephen, Brandon, Lacey and Torey and several great grandchildren. Along with her loving husband, Grant, Gertrude was predeceased by; her parents; a son, Grant Cassidy Jr. in 2009; a grandson, Timothy O. Pascucci in 2020; 4 siblings, William Giles, Robert "Bob" Giles, Betty L. Burrows and Ramona "Doll" Burrows.
