Douglas P. McCarthy, affectionately known as Doug, passed away on February 11, 2024 in Christiansburg, VA. He was born to Patrick and Bridget McCarthy on April 17, 1984 in Springfield, MA. He grew up in Ludlow, MA and enrolled in the Navy in 2006 aboard the US Oak Hill (LSD 51). Doug was a dedicated and proud brother, leaving behind his two sisters, Kathryn and Jennifer, his brother Joseph and his wife Kathleen. Doug was a proud uncle of three nieces, two nephews, and had countless aunts, uncles, cousins; whom he loved dearly. As a soldier, Doug served two deployments and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, serving in the Vessel Board Search and Seizure Team. He was trained in Blackwater and spent years traveling the world. Doug’s brilliance was noted in his journalism and his natural way with words. He shared his world with his poetic words that captured the hardships and truths of life. He channeled this by helping and advocating for Veterans by establishing numerous federal grants to help homeless Vets. Doug was naturally drawn to helping others. His love and support will be missed dearly. A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 10:30am at St. Elizabeth’s Parish, 181 Hubbard St., Ludlow, MA followed by a Veteran’s sendoff at St. Aloysius Cemetery. She was born in Christiansburg, Va. on June 29, 1950 to the late Walter Reid and Eunice Smith Arrington. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Phil Arrington. She graduated from Blacksburg High School in 1968 and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Christiansburg. She was formally employed at the Vintage Cellar. She loved her children and grandchildren, Virginia Tech football tailgating, high school reunions, the gourmet cooking club, and traveling. She is survived by her husband of 52 years. Robert D. Hockett, daughter and son-in-law, Lauren and Shawn Reed, son and daughter-in-law, Robbie and Tanya Hockett, grandchildren, Brody, Cooper, Nora, Natalie, Luke, sister, Diane Arrington, brother, Tommy Arrington, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Susan and Jim Gray, a niece and several nephews; as well as many special friends. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, February 9, 2024 at 11:00 am in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel. Her infectious laugh and generous nature made her a favorite among both regular customers and colleagues. A passionate basketball fan, Shaye's enthusiasm for the game was evident whether she was playing on the local courts or cheering from the sidelines. Her love for the sport was paralleled only by her ability to make people smile. Shaye's sense of humor and her genuine interest in the happiness of others were her most remarkable traits. Above all, Shaye cherished the time spent with her family and friends. Her presence was a source of comfort and joy, and the memories created during those precious moments will be treasured forever.
