Obituary Clarence L. "Nick" Nicholson, 91, of Camp Hill passed away Sunday, September 10, 2023. Born February 18, 1932 in Harrisburg, he was a son of the late Charles and Sylvia Nicholson. Nick was the widower, after 42 years of marriage, of Gloria M. Nicholson, since 1997 and also the widower of Ruth H. Freedman. He was also preceded in death by daughters Diane M. Baker and Valerie M. Nicholson. Retired from the warehouse of Harrisburg Grocery, he was a member of Christian Life Assembly, Camp Hill where Nick poured his heart and soul into running the Cumberland County Food Bank for 17 years. He was a graduate of Steel High, where he played football, and a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Nick loved his Lord and Savior and serving Him at the church and the food bank. Surviving are his son Steven A. , husband of Kathleen J. Nicholson of Dillsburg; grandchildren Tanya Matter (Tim), Shawn Nicholson (Bekah), Amy Lebo (Taylor) and Stephanie Nicholson (Nicholas); and great grandchildren Cameron Matter, Jasmine Matter, Ella Nicholson, Chase Nicholson and Matthew Lebo. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, September 14, 2023 at his church, 2645 Lisburn Road, Camp Hill preceded by a viewing starting at 10:00 AM. Beatrice Gyger, 93, of Hummelstown, passed away on Monday, December 4, 2023 at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. She was born on June 12, 1930 in Union City, NJ to the late Frank and Mae (Snyder) Schnorrbusch. Beatrice and her husband, Willi, served as missionaries in French Guiana South America for 43 years with Christian Missions in Many Lands (CMML). She was a devoted member of the Harrisburg Bible Chapel, was active with the Greenwood Hills Girls Camp and a member of Leader Center for Active Life. Surviving is her husband of 69 1/2 years, Willi Gyger, 6 children; Ruth Hamaker and her husband, David of Oxford, FL, David Gyger of Hummelstown, Deborah Oubre and her husband, Bert of Hendersonville, NC, Susanna Gyger of Hummelstown, Daniel Gyger and his wife, Diana of Forked River, NJ, Beatrice Whitley and her husband, Randy of New Cumberland, 4 sisters; Virginia Roeher of The Villages, FL, Joyce Hartwell of Egg Harbor, NJ, Dianne Longo of Egg Harbor, NJ, Mae Whitehead of Lebanon, MO, 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rachel Hamaker, 7 brothers; Frank, Jr. , George, Richard, Daniel, Kenneth, Fred and Roger. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A. Earl Stanley Hoffsmith Obituary Earl Stanley Hoffsmith, 87, entered the presence of his Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 3, 2023 after a courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Earl was born in Annville, PA, on February 18, 1936, to the late Paul and Annie (Herr) Hoffsmith. Earl was also preceded in death by brothers, Harold and Jim, and sisters, Pauline and Lucille. A graduate of Annville High School, he was a carpet and bricklayer by trade, working hard to provide for his family. He will be remembered as someone who loved God and his family. Big Earl, as many affectionately knew him, was kind and generous and a man of integrity. Earl enjoyed a long and happy marriage to his wife, Marion (Graybill) of 66 years. Together they found great joy in building a solid family, including children, Tom (Judy), Beth Coffey (Steve), Karen Gerhart (Steve) and Tim (Belinda), along with 14 grandchildren, David, Jennifer, Eric, Alexander, Kaylee, Stephen, Janelle, Nathan, Julia, Kevin, Lauren, Kent, Kyle and Joel and 24 great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly. He was a faithful prayer warrior for his family, praying by name for each one. Earl always had time for his grandchildren, including attending countless sporting events and cheering them on. As a long-time member of Community Bible Church, Palmyra, he served in various capacities and enjoyed using his building skills on several mission trips to New Mexico, Mexico and France and helping to build the church building. A real joy for Earl and Marion was opening their home that Earl built, providing meals and times of fellowship around the table to countless people, including family, friends and strangers. We grieve but not without hope. Because of Earl's faith in Christ, we look forward to being with him again someday in heaven. A memorial service will be held 1:30 PM Saturday, December 9, 2023 at his church, 1849 South Forge Road, Palmyra. Following Earl and Marion's example and joy in sharing hospitality, everyone is invited to stay and visit with the family and friends over some refreshments. We would love to talk with you. Obituary Albert H. Shirk, 100, formerly of Shellsville passed away Friday, October 6, 2023 at The Middletown Home, Middletown. Born November 22, 1922 in Lebanon County, he was a son of the late Edwin and Mary (Herr) Shirk and widower of Dorothy J. (Grimes) Shirk since June 2022, after 74 years of marriage. He was the last surviving of his immediate family, being preceded in death by brothers Arthur and David and sisters Alma, Mabel, Margaret, Hilda, Lillian, Frances, and Janice. Retired from Olin Miller, Hummelstown, he previously worked for the former Farm Bureau and was a World War II U. S. Army veteran having served in Japan as a lineman in 1945-1946. Albert was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Grantville and lifetime member of the Shellsville VFW Post #9639. Surviving are his children Richard A. Shirk (Cathy), Stephen H. Shirk (widower of Paula), Michael E. Shirk, Randy E. Shirk (Mary) and Mary E. Martz (widow of Michael); and numerous grandchildren; great grandchildren; and great great grandchildren. Cary Lee Engle, 85, of Lemoyne, PA, entered the presence of his Savior on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at his home. Born in Hershey on July 4, 1938, he was the son of the late Clarence L. and Margaret E. Holbert Engle. He graduated from the Hershey High School carpenter shop in 1956 and attended Grace College in Winona Lake, IN, where he met his wife, Barbara. He retired as a self-employed contractor after many years of building and maintenance work for area businesses, churches, friends, and neighbors. He formerly was employed by the Brethren Construction Company, building Grace Brethren Churches in Armagh, Chambersburg, Dillsburg, Lititz, Myerstown and other cities. His life's work and passion were for building the local church, caring for the physical structure as well as the spiritual discipleship of his fellow brothers and sisters with countless hours laboring in love for His Savior. He was known for his quality craftsmanship and as a quiet, patient, knowledgeable, and meticulous worker. He was a member of Melrose Gardens Grace Brethren Church, Harrisburg, since its establishment in 1949 as well as a board member of the Grace Brethren Retreat Center in Denver, PA, for many years. Cary was preceded in death by his sister, Judy K. Calvin. He is survived by his wife Barbara Echard Engle of Lemoyne; his sister Patsy Pacheco of Tallmadge, OH; one son, Lary D. Engle of Lancaster; three daughters, Lee Ann Horst (Blaine) of Norcross, GA, Linda K. Sawanowich (Joseph) of Lemoyne, and Loreen E. Katz (Evan III) of Harrisburg; and two grandsons, Ethan C. Horst (Taylor) of Fort Wayne, IN, and Evan Katz IV of Harrisburg. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 9, 2023, at 11 AM in the Melrose Gardens Grace Brethren Church, 2205 Swatara Street, Harrisburg, with The Rev. Christopher L. Knight and The Rev. Alan R. Echard, his nephew, officiating. Interment will be in the Hummelstown Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the church Friday from 10 AM until time of the services. Shirley M. Wert Bonawitz, 88, of Hummelstown, passed away Friday, September 29, 2023, in the UPMC Community Osteopathic Hospital. Born in Hummelstown on January 28, 1935, she was the daughter of the late John I. and Elizabeth J. Nye Wert. Shirley retired from the Lower Dauphin School District where she managed the library at the Annie B. Nye School in Hummelstown for 20 years. Prior to working for the school, she was a secretary in the Statistics Department of the former AMP, Inc. ; and was a teller and secretary for President Lauer at the former Hummelstown National Bank. Shirley was a 1951 graduate of the former Hummelstown High School. She was a very active member of Zion Lutheran Church of Union Deposit. Shirley enjoyed decorating her home for every season and flower gardening; and had a love and joy of animals. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Bonawitz, on October 19, 2011; two brothers, Wayne W. Wert and Charles C. Wert; and four sisters, Betty J. Cassel, Dorothy I. Lenker, Faye W. Wagner and Mary I. Fisher. She is survived by two sons, John W. Bonawitz, Jr. husband of Debra E. of Harrisburg, and Peter W. Bonawitz husband of Anne L. of Hummelstown; three grandchildren, Michelle A. Stank wife of Zachary R. , and John M. Bonawitz both of Harrisburg, and Kenneth C. Dixon of Denver, CO; two great grandchildren, Jeremy and Amelia Stank; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 6, 2011, at 11 AM in the Zion Lutheran Church of Union Deposit, 5 West Main Street, Hershey, with The Rev. Ursula E. Schreffler, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Hummelstown Cemetery. Friends are invited to the viewing Friday in the church from 10 AM until time of the services.
