Cindy Mapes, Dunkirk, died Wednesday October 4, 2023 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital following a sudden illness Born in Buffalo, New York on March 29th, she remained the age of "26" to those who knew her best Cindy grew up in Buffalo and lived in Florida before moving to Indiana She graduated from high school in Indianapolis and received an Associates degree in Nursing from Ivy Tech As a Licensed Practical Nurse and Unit Manager, she worked at Albany Health Care & Rehabilitation Center for the past 12 years Cindy organized and participated in Albany's annual Alzheimer's Walk and enjoyed sewing and crafts - particularly those with glitter or sparkles She was loving, big-hearted, selfless, and always put others before herself She was a loving and devoted Nonnie to her boys: Jamie and Zane Mapes, both of Dunkirk; daughter of Barbara "GiGi" Mapes, Albany; partner of Abby Whetsel, Dunkirk, and Nonnie to Trinity Mapes, Serenity Mapes, Jackson Mapes, and Silas Weeks Her father: Howie "PePa" Mapes and sister: Debbie Nafzinger are deceased In accordance with her wishes, cremation will take place In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association To to the family or in memory of Cindy Mapes, please

Dennis C. Thompson, age 85, Albany, died Friday December 1, 2023 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Union City, Indiana on October 9, 1938, he grew up in Richmond and lived there before moving to Albany in 2001. Dennis was a 1957 graduate of Richmond High School and remained a loyal Red Devils fan. He worked at Cinram Recording, Richmond, for several years and retired there in 1996 as Distribution Manager. He was a member of Knights of Columbus (lifetime member) and Elks Lodge, both in Richmond, and Albany Golf Club. Dennis enjoyed sports of all kinds and was a golfer and bowler over the years. Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years, Marie Thompson; daughter: LeeAnn Case (husband: Mike), McComb Township, MI; step-son: Kevin Conley, Speedway; step-daughters: Kim Karras, Danville, and Kandice Granato (husband: Tom), Beavercreek, OH; 6 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father: Donald E. Thompson, mother: Ludena (Caron) Thompson, and a sister: Nancy Atkins. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a. m. on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Meacham Funeral Service, Albany. Visiting hours are from 11 until 11:30 a. m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Corydon, IndianaCharles Alvin Stewart, Jr. 85, died Thursday, November 30, 2023, in New Albany, Indiana. He was born September 11, 1938, in Louisville, Kentucky to Charles Alvin Stewart Sr and Rosine Ann Peters Stewart. Charles joined the U. S. Army in 1957 where he served as a Special Forces Green Beret. He was a life-time member of VFW 2950 post (Corydon, Indiana), a member of Special Forces Association, the International Union of Operating Engineers for 25 years. He was also a member of the Eagles Organization, Knights of Columbus, and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Corydon, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, David, Tony, and Arthur Stewart. Those he left behind to cherish his memories are his wife, Brenda Larue Stewart of Corydon; Sons, Charles C. Stewart (Grace) of Navarre, Florida; Timothy J. Stewart of New Middletown, Indiana, Jeffery W. Stewart (Sandy) of Corydon, Indiana; Jonathan A. Hubert Melvin Mefford, 89, of New Albany, IN passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. He was born in Lagrange, KY to the late Arthur Dora and Hattie Lucille Curtis Mefford, part of what would become a family of twelve children. Hugh grew up farming and hunting around Kentucky and Indiana. He continued to enjoy keeping a garden and roaming the woods to hunt deer way into his adult years. During his youth, he also developed his vocation as a top-notch Pressman, enjoying the many challenging and interesting projects that came his way from various businesses in both the cities of Philadelphia and Louisville. While in Philadelphia, he became an avid Phillies and Eagles fan, and then a loyal Wildcat fan once he settled back in his hometown in Kentucky. Attending numerous games and gatherings to root for his teams kept him boisterous and active. His enjoyment of Bluegrass music took him on many camping trips through the years, as he found it hard to pass up a good festival, especially if he could hang out with his siblings along the way. On most occasions, Hugh/Papaw came prepared in the "Big Horn" for impromptu card games and corn hole. Above all, his smile and hugs were felt on numerous occasions and milestones that he attended with his beloved family! His loving presence and desire to serve his family have left beautiful memories and great recipes for generations to come. He is preceded in death by daughter, Brenda Jo Mefford; stepson, Robert Lewellen; son-in-law, Jimmy Angell; granddaughter, Lindsay Angell; great-grandson, Matthew Stoess; and 5 siblings. Left to cherish the memory of Hugh are his wife of 38 years, Barbara Mefford; 7 daughters from his previous marriage to the late Emma Lee Mefford, Marilyn Mefford, Annette Mefford, Theresa Angell, Debbie Mefford, Becky Bernhard (Bill), Nancy Smith (Jeff), and Kim Lane (Doug); stepdaughter, Debbie Bowen (Wayne); stepson, Kenny Lewellen (Tammy); 17 grandchildren, 23 great grand-children, 3 step-grandchildren, 2 step-great-grandchildren; 6 siblings, Fran, Punky, Buddy, Phyllis, Jerry, and Linda; and many extended family and friends. A funeral service for Hugh will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023, at 10 am at Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Home, 706 W Jefferson St, LaGrange, KY 40031. Janiece Evelyn (Seacat) VanMeter, 95, of Marengo, Indiana passed from this life on November 29, 2023 at Baptist Health- Floyd Hospital in New Albany, Indiana. Janiece was born on October 27, 1928 in Milltown, Indiana to the late Paul Edwin and Mae (Jones) Seacat. She married Charles D. VanMeter on March 15, 1947. Janiece was co-owner/operator of Van's Restaurant in Marengo, Indiana, along with her husband, Charles D. VanMeter for many years. She sang in the Marengo Trio, which consisted of Phyllis Crandall, Mary Newlin, and Virginia Vance sang with them sometimes, forming a quartet. She loved the outdoors, fishing on Blue River, mushroom hunting, feeding the squirrels and birds, gardening, loved the holidays and entertaining, and most of all, loved her family. She is survived by her sons: Scottie VanMeter (Rickie) of Marengo, Indiana and Dean VanMeter (Kyle West) of St. Louis, Missouri; former daughter-in-law: Cheri Smith; grandchildren: Michael VanMeter (Laura), Jason VanMeter (Jamie), Crystal Bullington (James), and Chase Van Meter; 9 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles D. VanMeter; a brother, Lowell Wayne Seacat and his wife, Betty Seacat. Funeral services will be on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 12:00 p. m. at the Marengo Independent Methodist Church, 1449 N. Hardy Road, Marengo, Indiana 47140. Interment will follow in the Union Chapel Cemetery near Milltown, Indiana. Visitation will be on Saturday, December 2, 2023 from 10:00 am until time of the service at 12:00 p. m. , at the church.
