Stephen Richard Parelli

Jan 23, 1953 - Feb 19, 2024

location-icon

Bronx, NY

Stephen Richard Parelli was born in Syracuse, New York State on January 23, 1953 to Richard Parelli and Dorothy Mills. He was the eldest of three children. At a young age he became a follower of Jesus. He was actively involved in his church’s youth group and in his Senior year, lived with Christian missionaries on the island of Martinique, France for several months. There he gained a love of languages and the many cultures of the world. Steve pursued his love of ministry by attending Baptist Bible College where he attained his BA of Bible and BRE (Bachelors of Religious Education). He went on to seminary at Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary to get a Masters of Divinity. He married and had 4 children. His service as Youth Pastor and later Senior Pastor spanned almost 20 years. However, marriage and ministry did not change his orientation as gay man. In 1997 Steve became partners with Jose Ortiz. They later married in 2008 when NY State decided to recognize same-sex marriage licenses of couples who married in other states that had legalized such unions. In 2004 Steve felt the call to share their story of being gay Christians with the resistant yet increasingly aware Christian community worldwide. In Mexico, for the first time Steve and Jose shared their experiences and understanding of how their orientation and faith were reconciled. Thus began their involvement of 13 years of sharing the good news of God’s inclusion in 30 countries around the world when Steve became the executive director of an NGO called Other Sheep. This organization, which started in Argentina, worked for the full inclusion of sexual minorities within the respective faith traditions. He also earned a MA in Teaching ESL and for a time taught English to Spanish-speaking adult students in his home. Steve loved Biblical languages, history, nature, camping, and travel. His world travel spanned 60 countries mostly with his husband and sometimes alone. Steve is survived by his brother Jeff, and the children from his first marriage: Jennifer, Heidi and Christopher. His eldest daughter Rebecca Hamdy predeceased him in 2016 but left him a son-in-law Ammar Hamdy of Alexandria, Egypt, who is like a true son. Steve leaves behind his husband and life partner of 27 years - Jose Ortiz. He will be remembered as a joyful, witty, wise and caring person who loved making new friends everywhere he went, be it the subways of NYC or the crowded train stations of India. Those who met Steve noted right away his love of people, deep and intelligent conversations, adventure and seeing new places. He will be missed by friends world-wide as he is joyfully received in the realms of Glory where his Savior will wrap him the biggest, warmest, and most satisfying embrace.
