Gary Checkai

Gary Checkai

Age - 55

December 1, 2023

Gary Lee Alan Checkai, 55, fell asleep in death on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at his home in Waukesha, Wisconsin, surrounded by family after a 4 1/2 year battle with metastatic colon cancer. Gary was born on November 1, 1968 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was the first son of Rodney and Julia Checkai. He grew up in Racine, Wisconsin and after high school he began working for Wil-Kil Pest Control where he spent a 30 year career and emerged as a true leader, earning the respect of those he worked with. Gary loved history and often said he was born in the wrong decade. He took pleasure in collecting old, full soda bottles and finding unique items at flea markets and festivals. He was quick witted, had a corny sense of humor and was never above a practical joke. His family knew him to be a stickler for being on time and thinking all should embrace his opinions. He was exceedingly proud of his kids and reveled in amazement at becoming a grandpa. Whether to warm up or ease the cares of the day, his go to was a nice, hot, bubble bath, preferably with "Mr. Bubble". He also greatly enjoyed traveling with his wife, Betsy, and especially their adventures in the Caribbean. Gary was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in December 1987. He had a very strong hope that there would be a resurrection to life on a paradise earth for those in God's memory, and found comfort in the promise at Revelation 21:3-4 that suffering, pain and death will be no more. Gary is survived by his wife Betsy Checkai whom he loved very much; his children Jessica (Sean) Piquett, Brandan Checkai (Ashley Thorpe and daughter Mya); grandchildren Bennett, Maverick & Elsie Piquett and Eli Checkai; and his mother Julie Checkai. He was preceded in death by his father, Rod Checkai and his brother Darren Checkai. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 2:00 PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 8720 S Sunnyview Dr, Oak Creek, WI 53154.Show more
