Chris Stroud, Sr. June 19, 1940 - September 8, 2023Bucklesberry- Chris Hardison Stroud, Sr. was delivered from the cares of this life on September 8, 2023. He was born in Lenoir County to the late Donnie Stroud and Minnie Whaley Stroud on June 19, 1940. In addition to his parents, Chris was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Betty Stocks Stroud; and three brothers, Junior Stroud, Bud Stroud, and Nub Stroud. Chris was a farmer through and through. He had a love for the land that ran deep and he was happiest with his hands in the soil. Even after working the farm for hours a day, Chris still enjoyed going home to his garden or watering the flowers in his yard. He took pride in the appearance of his yard and worked diligently to make it a place of peace and enjoyment. Hunting and fishing were some of Chris's favorite pastimes. He and Chris, Jr. enjoyed being in the woods with a gun in hand or on the water, feeling the tug of a fish on the line. There were many good times spent out in his shop cooking and sharing the meals with Betty, Mary and Greg, Chris and Vivian, and his grandchildren. Chris was a natural in the kitchen and when cooking in the shop. He payed no mind to the recipe and only cooked by taste. The one meal that Chris ventured out for each morning was breakfast, and he only went to B. J. 's Grill. With a humble spirit and appreciation for truth, Chris was always honest and never misleading. One of his most memorable comments was, "It ain't gon' get no better!" and he shared it religiously. Chris was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, provider, and friend. A service of remembrance will be held by the graveside at Fairview Cemetery on Monday, September 11, 2023, at 11 a. m. The family will greet friends immediately following the service. Chris is survived by his children, Chris Stroud, Jr. and wife, Vivian, and Mary Mumford and husband, Greg; grandchildren, Bradly Mumford (Ashley) and Bobi Lynn Smith; great-grandchildren, Grayson and Parker Mumford, and Harley and Ed Smith; as well as his favorite fur-companion, Sissy. Randall CarterMay 25, 1946 - November 26, 2023La Grange- Randall "Coon" Earl Carter victoriously met his Savior face-to-face in the early hours of Sunday, November 26, 2023. He was born in Lenoir County to the late George Daniel Carter and Mildred Jones Carter on May 25, 1946. In addition to his parents, Coon was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Rose Ann Thomas Carter; son, Randy Shawn Carter; and brother, Donald Carter. With a stubborn streak a mile wide, Coon was determined, strong-willed, and independent. In the event he called for reinforcements, he expected them to arrive by the time he hung up the phone. If they didn't come when he was ready, he would start or finish the project without them. There was nothing he couldn't fix and no problem he couldn't solve, even at the detriment of his home, tractor, or tools and equipment. Owning his own business allowed Coon the opportunity to teach himself various tricks and trades. He enjoyed the opportunity to tinker on his tractor or start up the chainsaw for various projects. In his earlier years, Coon was a farmer and involved his children in the daily chores and work as well, even if it meant digging potatoes with spoons so as not to damage them. Coon's retirement consisted of gardening and lots of surf fishing. Cooking a good fish stew was always a priority, and his methods left no room for any "modern mumbo jumbo", especially when it came to dipping the eggs. Coon had a sense of humor that never went unnoticed. He was a jokester and, on occasion, a prankster. Even in his final days, Coon continued to plan and calculate just how to confuse and surprise his children to the end. Second only to God was Coon's family. Coon and Rose raised their eight children with completely opposite parenting styles. He was the giver of tough love and she of compassion and patience. He was proud of his children, especially in the way he raised his girls. He often stated that he felt sorry for any man married to a Carter woman. The girls always had a 10 or 11 p. m. curfew and none of the children were allowed to venture out with friends if there was any form of inclement weather. To Coon, rain or snow meant NO, you can't go. As grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, his heart softened but his life lessons were still shared in abundance. He was a loving and supportive father, always present in the time of need. With a powerful and relatable testimony, Coon allowed Christ to transform his life. He served the Lord and his church for many years at Trinity Free Will Baptist. If the doors were open, Coon was walking through them. His church family was dear to his heart and he was a faithful supporter and friend to his pastor. Though Coon's family grieves their loss, they find solace in knowing he is with the Savior of his soul. A service of remembrance will be held at Rouse Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at 2 p. m. Family will receive friends in the hour before the service. Committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery in La Grange. Coon is survived by his children, Donald Carter (Tammy), Debbie Teachey (Mike), Delores Foster (Carl), Sandra Whitehead (Anthony), Stacie Whitley (Keith), Susan Bigler (Coburn), and Michele Slavin (Jason); sixteen grandchildren, Megan, Kristen, Matthew, Benny, Brittany, Brandon, Joshua, Collin, Miles, Ray, Gage, Cassie, Hailey, Logan, Courtney, and Spencer; seventeen great-grandchildren; along with many special family members and friends. Judy HoltNovember 4, 1961 - November 12, 2023La Grange- Judy Ann Holland Holt peacefully slipped away from time into eternity on November 12, 2023. Judy was the daughter of the late Vernon Clark and Martha Brothers Holland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father whom she dearly loved, Irv Holland. Education was of utmost importance to Judy. She attended Atlantic Christian College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Master of Arts in Sociology from East Carolina University. Putting her passion for education into play, Judy was a professor at Lenoir Community College. With an appreciation of fashion, Judy believed in presenting herself with properly styled hair and makeup whenever she went out. Even through her illness, she continued putting forth the effort to be well put-together. She had a love of vintage jewelry and always knew how to pair it with the right outfit. Her creativity sparked as she began making her own jewelry, and even into her love of painting. Judy possessed a tender heart that prompted her to open her home to several well-loved pets throughout the years. She was a devoted daughter and caretaker in her mother's final years. Though her circle was small, Judy maintained several friendships that became lifelong and loyal. Judy was most proud of her daughter, Jenny. She remained her biggest cheerleader throughout her life. Judy is survived by her daughter, Jenny Holt; brother, Jeff Clark and wife, Sue; as well as many family and friends. Linda Carol JonesMarch 24, 1949 - November 17, 2023Ayden-Linda Carol Alphin Jones, 74, passed away on Friday, November 17, 2023 while being cared for at Ayden Court. Linda was born on March 24, 1949 to the late Durwood and Sadie Ruth Ward Alphin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Jones. Starting out early in life working at DuPont in Kinston, Linda Carol dedicated her entire career there and retired after many years of service. Around the home, Linda Carol spent her time either crafting or cooking. With a great attention to detail, she could craft something out of nothing, and made many Christmas ornaments through the years. Everything that came from her kitchen was excellent, and gathering her family around the table was one of her greatest delights. Though Linda Carol was fond of all animals, she simply adored dachshunds. There is no telling how many dachshunds she had through the years, for life simply wasn't complete unless she had her favorite dog by her side. Spending time with family was Linda Carol's greatest pleasure. Traveling with them was always a highlight, and they conquered many destinations including the North Carolina Zoo, Kings Dominion, Disney World, and many trips to the mountains. Her favorite spot of all was the beach however, and each year her family enjoyed a vacation at the Pepper Tree resort. A service of love and remembrance will be held by the graveside at Fairview Cemetery at 1:00 p. m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2023. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation and fellowship from 6:00 - 8:00 on Monday evening, November 20, 2023. Kenneth Lee HowardDecember 30, 1938 - September 22, 2023La Grange - Kenneth Lee Howard passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 22, 2023. He was born in Lenoir County to the late Finnie Howard and Sadie Mae Howard on December 30, 1938. Kenneth was born on a farm and learned a strong work ethic right from the beginning. He continued to work hard all of his life and found his way back to the farm. He served in the United States Army, the 3rd Armored Division. After his service, he worked as a robot welder operator. He always had several jobs going, never one to sit idle. Kenneth loved to ride motorcycles and spent more than 50 years riding as much as he possibly could. His Honda Goldwing was his favorite. He also had a love for fast cars, especially his Corvette. He rode most of the country, simply enjoying the views. He was a man who lived on his own terms and found much joy in life. Kenneth is survived by his grandchildren, Daron Gray and Deanna Gray; and his sisters, Alice Jean Dowdle and Elaine Hill. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Dudley Howard; daughter, Sonia Renee Howard; sisters, Mavis Rouse and Sadie "Darlene" Cox; and brother, Charles Linwood Howard. Mark John Hollar Sr. September 5, 1940 - September 20, 2023Mark John Hollar Sr. passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2023. Born in Hickory, NC, on September 5, 1940, he was the youngest child of the late Alberta Stamey Hollar and Emory Robert Hollar Sr. Mark was an Eagle scout. He was a graduate of Western Carolina University and in the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. Mark received his master's degree from Appalachian State University. For most of his career, he was a Spanish instructor and Director of Admissions at Lenoir Community College. During his retirement, Mark was a Mary's Kitchen volunteer, woodworker, gardener, traveler, and golfer, yet his true loves were his faith and his family. He was a long-time member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church and served the church in many capacities. His large family includes wife Gilda; children, Mark Hollar Jr. , Matthew Hollar (Alex), Lisa Alphin (Carlton), Lori Fulghum (Jabo), William Barnes (Terry), and stepson Charles Davis (Erin); grandchildren Ayla Hollar, Jacob Alphin (Kristen), Madison Upton (Rudy), Tyler Gray, April Wiggins (Jon), Stephen Mozingo, Ellie Davis, and Jack Davis; great-grandchildren Wade & Miles Alphin, Reagan and Anna Gray Upton, William Lee, Maylee and Natalee Wiggins. Mark is also survived by his sisters Carolyn Deal (Jack) and Rachel Childress (Gene), sister-in-law Billie Sue Hollar, brother-in-law Craig Hardy (Leers), fourteen nieces and nephews, as well as colleagues, friends, and neighbors. Judy Jernigan FieldsJune 15, 1945 - September 18, 2023La Grange - Judy Jernigan Fields passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 18, 2023. Judy was born June 15, 1945 to the late Claude Jernigan and Ottie Fields Jernigan in Lenoir County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Fields. Judy was born and raised in Lenoir County and this was always her home. She found her spot on Railroad Street and had the most beautiful yard, only matched by her immaculate home she wanted to keep as close to time period as possible. Her home was built in 1852, but it was loved on by Judy and so cared for, no one would even know its age. She took great pride in keeping everything just so and did not compromise. Judy was known in the community as the face of Wachovia for many years. She retired as the branch manager of the La Grange branch. After retirement, she found a love for traveling that carried her to sights she had only dreamed. She went along with her loving companion, D. L. The two had many treasured experiences over the last 20 years. This included enjoying dancing and listening to country music. While Judy enjoyed the comforts of her home, she looked forward to spending as much time as possible with her daughter and best friend, Tracy. They two of them formed a bond that carried far beyond mother and daughter. From the beach and beyond, Judy would go with Tracy, looking for the most beautiful antique. If she could find the right lamp, her day was made. Judy was an animal lover and known to rescue any cat which she encountered. But her love for animals went far beyond this. She rescued a squirrel that became a pet and adored Tracy's dog, Gus. Judy's heart was huge. She supported her community and was a member of the La Grange Garden Club. She was a wonderful mother, friend, and partner in this life. A Service of Love and Remembrance will be held in the chapel of Rouse Funeral Home on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 3:00 pm. Visitation will take place an hour prior to the service, 2:00 pm. Following the service, the family will receive friends at Judy's home. Judy is survived by her daughter, Tracy Delgado and husband, Tony; her granddaughter, Brooklyn Delgado; her faithful companion and partner in this life for the past 20 years, D. L. Paulette CarlyleSeptember 29, 1943 - September 15, 2023Seven Springs-Paulette Melton Carlyle, 79, exchanged the bonds of this earth for the joys of life eternal on Friday, September 15, 2023. Paulette was born in Onslow County to the late Ernest and Irene Padgett Melton on September 29, 1943. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick Carlyle; sister, Margaret Tucker; parents, Irene and Ernest Melton; and sister-in-law, Angie Melton. Known for her demeaner that exemplified the life of a true Christian, Paulette was sweet, loving, and kind. Whether in the company of friends and family or even strangers, those around her experienced her love through her generous spirit, shining blue eyes, and beautiful smile. Never one to meet a stranger, Paulette could strike up a conversation with anyone and make them feel instantly at ease. Harsh words were simply not part of her vocabulary, and her personality didn't allow for anger or bitterness. Paulette was a faithful servant of God, attending Glen Raven Baptist Church any time the doors were open. When Paulette and Dick's daughter, Paula, was young, Paulette found interest in the things of youth, joining right in with Paula with whatever she was doing. Paulette became just another kid as she played in the yard with the kids, and none could best her in the game of kickball. She was always on the go, spending as much time with her family as she could. Weekly shopping trips were commonplace as Paulette joined her mother and daughter in a three-generation trio. Paulette's skills in the kitchen were not unnoticed. Though the family often looked forward to her great dishes, they couldn't assume the food was for them. Her heart for stray animals saw her take in many dogs, and her cooking was just as much for them as it was for her family. Though short in stature, Paulette's legs were long enough to ensure great speed on the highway. Known for her lead foot, the younger members of her family loved the thrill of riding along with her as each tiny bump felt like a full-fledged roller coaster. Dedicated to her work, Paulette served many years as a lab technician at Glen Raven Mills. Never missing a day of work, her coworkers became friends as they shared day-to-day life. Payday was the day that Paulette splurged a bit on herself, as a trip to the local record store helped her generate a vast collection of 45's containing the hits of all her favorite country music stars. Country music was one of many loves, as Paulette also enjoyed her Almond Joy candy bars and watching wrestling on television. When things got out of hand in the wrestling ring, Paulette became a referee from home as she shouted back at the wrestlers with her view of the match. The love of family made all other loves fail in comparison. The relationship that Paulette shared with her husband was one that any married couple would love to emulate, and she was simply the best mother. Though her life and the lives of her family members were forever changed after Paulette's car accident 28 years ago, the whole family is thankful for the years she was granted after her life was spared. A service of love and remembrance will be held at 2:00 p. m. on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at Rouse Funeral Home with Pastor Gene Miller officiating. The family will receive friends in the hour before the service. Committal will follow the service at Westview Cemetery in Kinston.
