Melvin Earl Chappel was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 12, 1942, to parents Juanita Chappel and James Crossgrove. November 21, 2023, Melvin Chappel, 81, of Antioch, California, passed away peacefully in the hospital surrounded by family and friends. After Melvin graduated from Englewood High School in 1960 and obtained his Associate Degree in Accounting from Kennedy King College, he also studied Accounting and Finance at Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, he pursued his Master's in Business Administration. In his adult life, he served in the branch of the military Air Force as a communications specialist with top-secret clearance from 1963-1966. Melvin moved to California in 1978, where he met his love, Cassandra. Melvin and Cassandra married in 1979 and resided in Oakland, California, with son Eric and daughter Monique. In 1990, they moved to Antioch, which they have called home for over 30 years. Melvin worked as a supervisor in the U. S. Federal Government of the Health and Human Services Department for over 30 years. In 2003, Melvin retired and spent his time serving two terms with the Contra Costa County Civil Grand Jury and as a Fire Commissioner for Contra Costa County. Melvin also served on the Sales Tax Citizens oversight committee for the City of Antioch and was a CCC First 5 of Antioch Board Member. Melvin was a huge sports fan and collector of many gadgets, coins, stamps, books, music, and clothes. Melvin worked as a Pac-10 official for 14 years at the college and professional levels in football and basketball. He retired in 1999. Melvin's favorite pastime was BBQs, hosting family events and birthday parties, watching sports, researching his coins, working on his crossword puzzles, watching MSNBC, riding his electric scooter to the store, shopping on Amazon, calling Geek Squad, listening to his music, and hosting Thanksgiving dinners each year. Melvin was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a loving, caring, and compassionate person. Melvin had a great sense of humor and welcomed everyone into his home and life. He loved to travel, go cross country in his RV, head to the casinos with his wife, and read especially about Chicago. He was baptized at an early age and loved Jesus Christ. Melvin adored spending time with his family, especially his sons, daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends. Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, Juanita Chappel and James Crossgrove; his mother-in-law, Grace Smith, nieces Cynthia Williams, Nicole Gibson, and Sherri Howard; brothers-in-law James Galbert and Vernon Booker; and sisters-in-law Shirley Howard and Brenda Booker. Melvin is survived by his wife, Cassandra Chappel, the love of his life. Melvin leaves to remember him with love, his children, Dardi Hammonds (Larry), Malcolm Chappel (Norma), Eric Chappel (Desiree), Monique Chappel, Roxane Slaughter (Wes), Michael Russell Chappel (Kathy), Tami Bialk (Richard), siblings Toni Crossgrove, Paul Crossgrove, Selina Jackson, his nephews Cameron Barnes, Chris Barnes, Ian Crossgrove, Alexander Crossgrove, his grandchildren Steven Hammonds, Matthew Hammonds, Brandon Chappel, Eric Chappel Jr. , Tristan Chappel, great-grandchildren Elijah Hammonds and Saxton Hammonds, sisters-in-law Celestine Galbert (James-deceased), Cecilia Belue (Eric), brother-in-law Andrew Howard (Yolanda), cousins Barbara Muse (Ray), Rea Francis Howard, Betty Center, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
