Mr. John Pressley Steele, 81, of 166 Hallmark Road, Statesville, was born on June 1, 1942, and was the son of the late Augustus and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Cowan Steele. He departed this life on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at his home following an extended illness. He was a graduate of Unity High School and received an Associates Degree. He served with the United States Army and was honorably discharged. He owned and operated a Professional Auto Body Repair Shop. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Sykes Steele, who survives. In addition to his wife, he leaves to celebrate and cherish the memory of his life his children, Matthew Dixon of Washington, D.C., Johnathan Steele of Fredericksburg, VA, and Lawrence Morgan of Concord, NC; his daughters, Nakia Little of Statesville, NC, Jamiah (Clyde) Willis of Winston-Salem, NC and Daliese (Ryan) Kreider of Statesville, NC; his grandchildren, Markia Little Kreider of Stephenville, TX, Zaria Willis of Winston-Salem, NC, Ian Kreider and Greyson Kreider, both of Statesville; his brothers, Dallas (Irene) Steele, Jimmy Steele and Clarence Steele, all of Harmony, NC; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rosa Grant of Emporia, VA, Paul Sykes, Betty Webb and Erma Vick, all of Garysburg, NC and Johnnie (Glenda) Sykes of Hampton, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, church family, neighbors and friends. "Fully Rely on God" Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Friday, February 23, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Harmony, NC. Reverend Sylvester Reed, Pastor will officiate and Reverend Burrel Brooks will eulogize with burial following in the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery where Military Rites will be performed. Mr. Steele will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie in state at 12:00 p.m. Members of the family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 p.m. until 1:00 p.m., but will assemble at the residence at other times. Mary Ellen Wrightsman, age 83, of Statesville, North Carolina went home to our Lord Jesus and Savior on Friday, February 16, 2024, at 8:30 in the morning. Mary was born on Sunday, June 2, 1940 in Bloomington, Indiana to Roscoe and Gladys Miller. Mary was raised by her adopted parents, Frances and Lowell Smith, due to the untimely death of her parents. She was a twin and one of six sisters and one step-sister. She was employed at RCA in Bloomington, Indiana for a few years. She also helped her husband Bud to farm their land. She married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Albert(Bud) Wrightsman. They were married for 62 years. They had two children, Scheryl and Jeff. Mary and Albert enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, anything to do with horses, riding, camping, farming their land, sports, and riding their motorcycles. She loved her family and would do anything for them. She was a very devoted woman of faith. You would often throughout the day find her reading the word of God and praying for family and friends. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing and play the piano. She was a member of and attended Diamond Hill Baptist Church with her daughter Scheryl, son in law Ron, and grandson Travis. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Wrightsman; her parents, her son Jeff Wrightsman; granddaughter in law, Jessica Clines; her twin sister, Helen and three other sisters Mary is survived by her daughter, Scheryl Clines(Ron); daughter in law, Tammy Wrightsman; grandchildren, Craig Clines(Jessica), Travis Clines, Chad Wrightsman(Melissa), and Kayla Wrightsman; great grandchildren, Kyle Clines(Lydia), Carlynn Clines, Chad Wrightsman Jr., Salina Wrightsman, and Savanna Wrightsman and her sister, Gwen Phillips. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Diamond Hill Baptist Church beginning with a visitation at 10:30 am and service at 11:00 am. Pastor Larry Holleman will be officiating as well as her grandson Travis Clines.

Janette (Tumpy) Gryder-Crider, 74, of Statesville passed away on February 13, 2024 at her home surrounded by family and ascended to her heavenly home. She was born January 30,1950 in Statesville to the late John Wesley Gryder and Doris Aileen Gryder who survives.She graduated from Statesville Senior High School in 1968, then moved on to take some classes at Mitchell Community College.In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband Hoke Crider, a daughter Crystal Allison (Bobby), a grandson Noah Kennedy (Marytza Salgado), three sisters , Mary Wilson (Johnny) of Monroe, Barbara Millsaps (Rick) of Statesville and Doris Sams (Charlie) of Troutman, one brother David (Buddy) Gryder (Margarette) of Statesville. She has several nieces and nephews that she loves very much especially Wesley Sams , who gave her the nickname ,Toto, years ago. She also has a big extended family through her husband, Hoke, that she loves very much and her fur baby, Rowdy, that she loved to spoil. She was predeceased by her father, John Wesley Gryder.Janette loved to go camping, especially at the beach. She loved to travel and see new places. And she loved butterflies. Janette was a member of Bible Baptist Church.A memorial service will be held on February 24, 2024 at 3:00 with a visitation starting at 2 at Bible Baptist Church on Gilbert Road in Statesville. Flowers can be sent to the home at 160 Pottery Drive. The family is asking any monetary donations to be made to Gordon’s Hospice House.

Mr. David R. Jolly, Jr.

Mr. David R. Jolly, Jr., 81, of Statesville, North Carolina, went to his heavenly home on Saturday, December 9, 2023, after a lengthy illness. He was born on November 16, 1942, in Iredell County. He was the son of the late US Army Private First Class David R. Jolly, Sr., who was killed in action in WWII, and Mrs. Mary Eveline Byrd Jolly, of Statesville, N.C. David graduated from Statesville Senior High School in 1962, and attended Mitchell College, majoring in Industrial Maintenance Engineering Technology. He worked at Raylass Department Store during high school. In 1972, he took a job at Hoechst-Celanese, formerly Fiber Industries, in Salisbury, N.C., and worked there in maintenance there for 33 years. He always said he was an A-1 mechanic! He enjoyed working in the shop at Celanese with his friends for many years. He also worked at the Statesville Auto Auction for a brief time, before finally retiring in 2013. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, David attended First Wesleyan Church, on Shelton Ave. He later converted to the Baptist faith, and began attending Calvary Baptist Church. David was a faithful Christian all through his life and loved Jesus. He loved watching UNC Chapel Hill Tarheel basketball games, especially during the Dean Smith era. He was a devoted Tarheel fan since 1957. He would yell “Go Heels!” every time they scored. In the fall months, he also enjoyed listening to Statesville High School football games on the radio. David always had an interest in studying the weather and space exploration, often saying he wanted to ride the clouds someday. He had a certificate from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for SKYWARN Storm Spotter training. He was also a member of the ALPCA (Automobile License Plate Collector Association), and collected license plates from various places. He enjoyed crafting bluebird boxes, going to bluegrass and gospel concerts, and going on train trips with his son, Eric, with who he shared an ongoing interest in railroading and model railroading. He also enjoyed taking trips to both the mountains and the beach. David was a kind and loving father who always there for his son. He was also a good friend, he never met a stranger, and he loved everyone. He often gave away Red Bird mints, replying, “thank you for thanking me”! He loved nature, animals, and kids. He was a very humble and always thankful fellow, who will surely be missed by all. Mr. Jolly is survived by one son, Eric D. Jolly, of Statesville, who cherishes his memory. Services for Mr. Jolly will be held on Friday, February 16, 2024, at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m., with Pastors Dermont Crabtree, Randall Mitchell, and Howard Wagoner officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to share a meal with the family after the services. Eric would like to thank everyone that took care of his father during his time of illness and sickness, especially Dr. John Nicholson. Kathleen “Kat” Nancy (Holcombe) Bartlett, 101, passed away February 5, 2024, at Brooksdale Peach Tree in Statesville, North Carolina. She resided at Givens Gerber Park, Asheville. Born in Weaverville, NC, she was the wife of the late Claude Franklin Bartlett, to whom she had been married 60 years before his passing in 2002. She was the daughter of the late Robert Bradford and Virginia Esper (Dover) Holcombe. Kat was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Holcombe, and a sister, Carolyn Freeman. She received her education at Weaverville High School where she was voted prettiest girl in her class. She furthered her studies at the Junior College of Saint Genevieve of the Pines. Kat and Claude were married August 16, 1942 at Carolina Beach, NC, and they later moved to Reems Creek, NC. They also lived in Buckroe Beach, VA, Tullahoma, TN, Enka and Arden, NC. She found solace and community in her worship at Arden First Baptist Church (Radiant Church). Kat worked at America Enka Plant for 10 years. She was a strong and caring woman, known for her gentle soul and sense of humor. She lived her life guided by her faith in God and cherished her relationships with others. Throughout her life, Kat made many friends during her 20+ years at Givens Gerber Park. She had a passion for cooking and enjoyed sharing meals with her loved ones. Family was of great importance to her, and she was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Kat is survived by her children: Dennis Bartlett (Joyce), of Yorktown, VA, and Rick Bartlett (Carolyn) and Patricia “Pat” Furness, all of Statesville; seven grandchildren: Sydney Bartlett (Paul ) of Sarasota, FL, Whitney Galley (Mike) of New Port Richie, FL, Blair Dames (Mike), of Holly Springs, GA, Bart Furness (Hanna) of Lexington, KY, Alex Elkins (Jack) of Cleveland, NC, Arik Bartlett (Tori) of Hamptonville, NC, and Landon Bartlett (Cassie) of Statesville. Also surviving are her many great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with Dr. Timothy Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Pisgah View Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to the service, from 1 to 2 PM.
