Dolores Greene

Dolores Greene

Age - 81

September 16, 2023

Dolores "Dee" Greene was born on December 31,1941 to Finis and Edna (Walter) Greene in Kansas City, Missouri, where she grew up with her two brothers, Ronyon and Kenyon. She graduated from Central High School and later from Doan College in Crete, Nebraska. After one year of teaching elementary school in Nebraska, Dee decided that teaching was not her forte. Dee was married to Rocco Vanasco, from Italy, for seven years during which time they moved frequently, and spent time living in Washington state and British Columbia, but eventually they landed in Wichita, where Rocco was a professor at WSU. Dee spent almost ten years working at the Salvation Army Booth Memorial Home and Hospital for unmarried, pregnant teenagers. She was able to connect to the most difficult girls and thoroughly enjoyed her work at Booth. While living in Chanute, Kansas, she decided to enroll in graduate school. She moved back to Wichita so she could commute to KU with a group of her close friends. She graduated in 1982 with a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree and began working at Family Consultation in Wichita. After several years of working there, she decided to start her own private practice. Together with Joann Harder, who acted as business manager, they started Adult, Child and Family Counseling. She absolutely loved doing psychotherapy and would often work 12-14 hours a day because talking with people energized her. She retired two years ago after 34 years at ACFC. Dee was a very loving and generous person who never met a stranger. She cared about and encouraged people to become their best selves. She loved to travel, especially to Hawaii or anywhere near the ocean. Dee began having health problems and discovered that her kidneys were failing. Her good friend, James Jerde, made the loving decision to donate one of his kidneys to her which added 15 years to her life. Five years ago, after a stroke, her health began to steadily decline. Her relationship with God helped her through the increasingly difficult health struggles and she remained a grateful friend. Dee entered heaven on September 12, 2023, after 6 days of hospice care in her home. She was preceded in death by her parents and both brothers. She is remembered by her nephews, Dan Greene and Jim Scott-Greene; her nieces, Kathy Greene {and son, Isaac), and Gina Vanasco; her sisters-in- law, Barb Greene and Mae Lewis; her friend, Joann Harder and daughters, Angie Harder and Alisa (Harder) Cox and her husband Jared, and children, Brody, Emery and Ella, and the whole Harder clan that she adopted as her second family.
