Warren-McElwain Mortuary Warren-McElwain Mortuary - Eudora Chapel Rheva Victor Drummond passed away on Wednesday, November 22nd, just a few days shy of her 84th birthday. Rheva was born on November 24th, 1939 in Williamsburg, Kansas to Melvin Bradshaw and Modene Frakes. Rheva graduated from Highland Park High School in Topeka, Kansas and attended Friends University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources Management. Service to community and others was a constant theme throughout Rheva's life, both professionally and personally. She was a trailblazing female executive, working as a leader in several nursing and adult care centers across the state for over two decades before retiring as Administrator of the Eudora Nursing Center in 2007. Rheva failed at few things in life, but retirement was one of them. She started a second career at Walmart, where she worked from 2007-2013, when she successfully retired. Rheva married the love of her life, David Drummond, on September 27 , 2008 in Lawrence, Kansas. Rheva and Dave traveled the world together. Some of their favorite trips were to China, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. In China, they were thrilled to be able to climb the Great Wall. While the scenery and pandas were incredible, they found the food to be terrible. Determined to stay and enjoy the trip, they stuffed their pockets with Babybele cheese from the buffets each morning, which they subsisted on for the duration of the trip. In Europe, they traveled from London to Germany. On every trip, they left no cuisine untouched, and no unique cocktail unsampled. India was one of their favorite trips, where they got to meet some of the happiest and content people in the world and see the Taj Mahal. They didn't just enjoy international travel. Together, they managed to travel to all 50 states. Alaska was their 50 state, which they celebrated by seeing a glacier in Hyder, Alaska. The trip also included a stay at a brothel-turned-motel, whose history they discovered AFTER they had booked the trip to the tiny glacier town. New York City was Rheva and Dave's "place. " They went every single year until the pandemic, staying at the same hotel where they were well known and loved by all the staff. Rheva's commitment to serving her community was evident in her active memberships and involvement in numerous community and fraternal organizations. She was a 25 year volunteer with the Kansas Guardianship Program and her memberships to fraternal organizations included the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and Eagles Lodge #309, where she became the first female trustee. She gave generously of her time and money to the Eagles Lodge, both in the traditional form and also via the game room. Rheva's family, and friends that became family, will always remember how much she loved being involved in the Lawrence St. Patrick's parade. She was preceded in death by her son Greg, husband, Dave Drummond, parents, Melvin Bradshaw and Modene Frakes and brother Leroy Bradshaw. November 26, 2023

Warren-McElwain Mortuary Warren-McElwain Mortuary - Eudora Chapel Betty Jo Miller, 101, passed away November 24, 2023, at Presbyterian Manor in Lawrence, Kansas. She was born on a farm near Early, Iowa, on April 1, 1922, to Meryl and Helen Wadsley. She always enjoyed telling people she had a foolish birthday, having been born on April Fools Day. She attended elementary and high school in Early and was valedictorian of her high school graduating class. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education from Iowa State University, and later received a Master of Education degree from Arizona State University. She taught school briefly after graduating, and married Bryce Miller in 1945. Bryce took a job with Doane Agricultural Services, and they moved from Iowa to Quincy, Illinois, where sons Rick and Mike were born. In 1952 the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, so that Bryce could advance his farm management career in the arid southwest. Daughter Mary was born in Phoenix. In Phoenix, Betty Jo was always active, whether as a piano teacher, church leader, choir member, scout leader, bridge player or seamstress. She was involved with the Phoenix Symphony Guild, the Phoenix Cotton Wives, and Urban Ministries. She was a member of the PEO sisterhood since 1954. After Bryce died in 1973, she pined for her beloved Midwest and moved back to Iowa in 1977, unfortunately committing the unpardonable sin of throwing away her sons' baseball card collection when she moved. She moved to Lawrence in 1979 to be near her sister, and instantly fell in love with Lawrence. She lived near the University and found great joy in hosting international graduate students, opening her home to them. She continued to maintain relationships with many foreign students and even travelled to Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore to visit some in their home countries. She taught piano out of her home for many years and loved all her students. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed everything from doll clothes to quilts to tailored suits. She was actively involved with First United Methodist Church, PEO, Douglas County Home Economists, Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity, the Lawrence Music Club, the Salvation Army Auxiliary, and her Bridge Club. She continued to be part of a chamber music ensemble, Sine Nomine, even after she moved into Assisted Living. She lived at Presbyterian Manor for over 20 years and loved everything about the Manor. Betty Jo loved all people, never met a stranger, and lived a life of gratitude. She is predeceased by her husband Bryce Miller, her brothers Ivan Wadsley and Dick Wadsley, her sister Arla Clyatt, and her daughter-in-law, Adele DuBourg Miller. She is survived by her son Rick Miller; her son Mike Miller and wife Diane; her daughter Mary Bullis and husband Paul; her granddaughter Natalie Juneau and husband Peyton; her granddaughter Lee Bullis, her grandson David Bullis and wife Alesha Rimmelin; her great-granddaughter Rosemary Bullis, and many nieces and nephews.
