Mr. Charles (Charlie) F. Davis, age 91 of Grand Haven, passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2022 at Lakeshore Assisted Living. He was born on June 22, 1931 in Muskegon, MI, to the late Thomas and Alice (Ploughman) Davis. Charlie graduated from Muskegon High School and went on to graduate from Muskegon Junior College and the University of Michigan L. S. A. Education and Graduate Schools. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army in Germany from 1953 to 1955, during the Korean Conflict Era. Charlie married Iris Hitsman in Grand Haven on August 19, 1960. She preceded him in death on October 5, 2008. Charlie taught English and Developmental Reading for 34 years in Grand Haven Public Schools, where he was also a Department Chair for 10 years. During his tenure, he also directed three Junior Class plays. He was a charter member of the Grand Haven Civic Theater where he acted in plays for 10 years. Charlie was a member of the Grand Haven Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, elder, liturgist, and an usher for over 50 years. He was a member of the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28 in Grand Haven, as well as a life member and past Master of the Noachite Lodge 507/Muskegon Lodge 140. He was a 32nd degree life member of Scottish Rite Grand Rapids Valley, past President of the Muskegon Shrine Club, and past Director of the Muskegon Shrine Clown Unit. Charlie enjoyed being "Chuggo the Clown" at Shrine Circuses and Parades for over 20 years. He also took handicapped kids to Chicago Shrine Hospital for Children and Cincinnati Shrine Burns Hospital for children. Charlie is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Duke) DeLeeuw of West Olive; son, Jeffrey Davis of Holland; grandchildren, Erin (Damien) DeLeeuw-Arbelo, Ian DeLeeuw, Cy (Crystal) DeLeeuw, Sophia DeLeeuw, and Tiana Davis; sisters, Kay (James) DeVries and Jan Thornton; and many cousins, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iris; daughter-in-law, Brenda Davis; and brother-in-law, James Thornton. The Funeral Service for Charlie will take place at 11:00 a. m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Troy Hauser Brydon officiating. Full Military Honors to be performed by the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be at Grand Haven Township Lakeshore Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church or Lakeshore Assisted Living Homes.
