Charles Avins Obituary

Charles Howard "Nudie" Avins, 87, widower of Margaret Barkley Avins, died Saturday, April 22, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family. Born September 8, 1935, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Russell Avins and the late Alpha Griffin Avins. He retired as a construction worker. He was an avid farmer and enjoyed his garden. He was of the Nazarene faith. Survivors include two sons, Dondi Avins (Lisa) of Sumter and Alvin Avins (Kim) of Manning; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; three brothers, Carol Avins, Melvin Avins, and Sammy Avins; and a sister, Inez Sinner. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Varner; and two brothers, Woodrow Avins and James "Bubba" Avins. A funeral service will be held at 11 A. M. Thursday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Kenny Griffin officiating. Burial will be in the Geddings Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Brian Avins, Dondi K. "Kelvin" Avins, Jr. , Cecil Varner, Roy "Bubba" Barker, Jr. , Michael Turner, Hayden Garris, and Blane Walton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P. M. Wednesday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Dondi and Lisa Avins, 4450 Nazarene Church Rd.
