"On August 31, 2023, Charlene Lolita VanMeter, of Crofton, MD, died peacefully at Anne Arundel Medical Center following an 11-year battle with thymus cancer. She was 67 years old. Charlene was born in Quonset Point, Rhode Island on March 29, 1956 to the late Charles William VanMeter and the late Lucy Wham VanMeter. While growing up, Charlene moved frequently due to her father's Naval Career. Charlene lived in Rhode Island, Virginia, South Carolina, Florida, Puerto Rico, and Washington state, before moving to North Carolina. There she attended the University of North Carolina. In 1978 she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. In 1981, she received her Master of Science in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University. Charlene moved to Maryland in 1978 to begin a career with the Department of Defense (DoD). In 1997, she transitioned to the private sector as a Systems Engineering consultant to the DoD. Charlene retired in 2019 to focus on her health and pursue her volunteer activities and hobbies. Charlene loved traveling and visited Europe, the Far East, and Australia, in addition to traveling throughout the US. Charlene really enjoyed photography, so her camera was a constant traveling companion capturing all her adventures. She was an avid reader and maintained an extensive library of her interests. She delighted in exploring new hobbies and was accomplished in needlework, piano, French, and gardening. Charlene's most cherished activity was playing with her cats. Always one willing to volunteer, she was a member of her homeowner's association and the Crofton Village Pool and Recreation Association. She volunteered at the Anne Arundel Medical Center as a patient advisor, and was active in her church, most recently serving as a deacon. Charlene is predeceased by her parents, Charles William VanMeter (d. Feb. 6, 1984), her mother, Lucy Wham VanMeter (d. 5/25/1988); and her younger brother, Charles (d. 3/6/2015). At 1 pm on September 20, 2023, a funeral will be held at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park, MD 21146. In lieu of flowers, Charlene requested that any memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society and Anne Arundel Medical Center, 20001 Medical Parkway, Annapolis, MD 21401. "

Barry Jay Frankel, 82, of Crofton MD died suddenly at his home on September 24, 2023. Barry, the son of Mildred and Joseph Frankel, was born in New York City on June 2, 1941. He was the oldest of three brothers, Larry (Wilmington, North Carolina) and Robert (deceased). During his teenage years, Barry was highly active and accomplished, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, serving as a summer camp counselor, and even becoming the class President during his senior year at Syosset High School. After graduation, Barry attended the University of Buffalo and then on to Brooklyn Law School. Shortly after graduation from law school, he entered the U. S. Army and served as an Officer in the Army Corp of Engineers, volunteering for duty in Vietnam. Following his time in the service, Barry practiced law in New York City before returning to public service, where he spent the next 33 years working for the real-estate division of the Army Corps of Engineers. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards and honors, ultimately achieving the designation within the Senior Executive Service, one of the highest ranks in civilian government service. Shortly after returning from Vietnam, Barry married the love of his life, Marsha Harris from Long Island, and they have been happily married for over 55 years. Barry is survived by his wife; two children, Janeen Spaulding (married to Peter Spaulding) and Brian (married to Kimberly Frankel); six grandchildren Joshua, Madison, Haley, Morgan, Sarah, and Breann; and brother Larry. He is preceded in death by his mother Mildred, father Joseph, brother Robert, and beloved dog Bella. Throughout Barry's life he enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, and spending time talking with anyone he came across. He never met a stranger, if you crossed his path, you were friends for life. In retirement, Barry spent his time woodworking and creating items he could share with others. Known for his caring and compassionate nature, Barry loved engaging with people, making them smile, and offering words of advice, whether they wanted it or not. Barry Jay Frankel's life was one of service to his country and community, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him. The family will accept visitation at Hardesty Funeral Home on Thursday, October 5, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by military honors and a memorial service.Show more

Paul David Williams of Crofton, Maryland, passed away on Friday, July 28, 2023 at the age of 80 with his family by his side. Paul was born on December 26, 1942 to Fred and Viola Williams of Madison, WV. He had wonderful memories growing up in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia with his sister and brother, Flora and Ben. Paul developed his love of the outdoors, hunting, and bathing in the creek growing up in West Virginia. He left home at 16 to work in a nursery in Ohio. He loved gardening, we always had fresh vegetables and usually a fruit tree or two. Paul joined the Navy as soon as he turned 17 and served 4 years on the U. S. S. Beale and made several Mediterranean tours during those years. He completed his high school education while in the Navy. After serving in the Navy, Paul worked for the Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO) as a building engineer. He stayed there for 30 years, retiring in 2000. After retiring from PEPCO, he worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He worked there for 5 years and retired in 2005 for the last time. In 1966, after the Navy, Paul moved to Maryland where he met his future wife, Diane. Paul and Diane were married on June 12, 1970 and celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary this year. His son Derrick was born in April of 1975. The years that followed Derrick's birth were full of fun, joy that children bring. Virginia Rosinsky was added to the family. Paul was a great Dad, not just for his own biological child, but for any child that came his way. When his shift allowed Saturday morning breakfasts were a neighborhood hit with trips to the dump in the back of his pickup. In 2007, Paul and Diane moved to Pennsylvania where he worked on his golf game. In the last tournament he played, he and his golf partner won the tournament which he was really proud of. He developed many good friendships while he lived in Pennsylvania. Then came the grandkids: Alaina, Mack, and Lily. The pull of family tugged at him. Those three were hard to resist and in 2022, Paul and Diane moved back to Maryland. Paul is survived by Diane, Derrick (Tammie), Virginia (Alvin), Alaina, Mack, and Lily, and lots of nieces and nephews. There will be a Memorial Service will be held at Grace Church in Lanham, Md. Sergeant Major (Retired) Paul A. Kerestes, age 93, of Crofton, MD, (formerly Saylorsburg, PA) passed away peacefully at his home on July 13, 2023. Paul was born January 19, 1930, in Mount Carmel, PA to Michael and Irene (Minzer) Kerestes. Raised in Mount Carmel, he attended Mt. Carmel Area High School playing football, which would become a lifelong passion for him, returning when able to see his team play well into his 80s. Paul was a humble man, providing 45 years of selfless service to this great nation, starting in 1949 by his enlistment in the United States Army. His 30-year military career would find him serving in post-WW II Japan as an engineer assisting in reconstruction, with the 77th Special Forces Group (Airborne) as a Special Forces Engineer in Laos on Operation White Star, conducting counterinsurgency operations, again in 1969 with the 5th SFG(A) Mobile Strike Force Training Command (MSFTC) in Vietnam, and later serving with 10thSFG(A) in Germany. During his military service, he met and married his beautiful wife, Elisabeth. After retiring in 1979, Paul found a successful second career at the United States Postal Service working in Allentown, PA. Retiring again in 1994, Paul enjoyed woodworking, ornithology, gardening, reading, and spending time with his family in the Poconos. Paul is survived by his twin grandsons, LTC(R) Paul Kopelen (his namesake), SGM(R) Robert Kopelen, and grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by a sister-in-law, Dolores Kerestes of Mt. Carmel, and numerous nieces and nephews. Paul is preceded in death by his wife, Elisabeth (Spiegler) Kerestes, and daughter, Elizabeth McMillian; sisters, Irene Gribbon and Margaret Parilla; and brothers, Stephen, John, and George Kerestes. Paul was a Lifetime Member of the Special Forces Association, the Disabled American Veterans (D. A. V. ), and a member of American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert and VFW Post # 2110 in Mt. Carmel.
