Herbert Payne

Age - 86

September 25, 2023

Herbert "Buddy" Glasgow Payne of Crewe, VA (and snowbird to Punta Gorda, FL) went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 23, 2023. Herbert was born on June 16, 1937 to Charlie William and Irene Hale Payne. He was seventh of eight children born to a poor sharecropper in Jennings Ordinary, VA. When his father, Charlie, died when he was just 16-years-old, he quit school in order to provide for the family. Since he had not been granted the same privilege of education, he valued education for his children and grandchildren, of whom he was very proud. As many know, there is no mention of Herbert without Gladys, no Buddy without Mamoo. They met on a blind double date when Gladys' friend fell ill and she filled in. The rest is history. It was true love at first sight: they courted for just three months before eloping in Gaffney, SC on February 16, 1957. They filled their home with two wonderful children, Wanda Kay and Dexter, as well as a beauty shop for Gladys. Herbert worked for 43 years at Norfolk Southern Railroad, eventually becoming an engineer before retiring. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing, fishing, slowpitch softball, and his vegetable garden. He grew Gladys' flower garden one season when she was sidelined due to injury so that she could enjoy the flowers. He would do most anything to bring love, sunshine and flowers into her life. Herbert would tell you the most important part of his life was his church and his faith in God. He was a long-standing member of Crewe Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and a pillar in the church as well as on the Baptist disaster relief. He wanted others to know the love of God, and he was a faith mentor to many. He was preceded in death by his beloved son Dexter Keith Payne, his parents and siblings James "Hatchett" Hatchett, Frances Seay, William "Pete" Payne, Doris "Dot" Covington, Norman Payne, Jean Strumb, and Mary Jane McBride. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, the former Gladys Pauline Kennedy; daughter, Wanda Kay Hunnings (Joe) of Blacksburg, VA; daughter-in-law Brenda Payne; beloved and devoted nephew Robbie Knight (Pam); grandchildren, Travis Hunnings (Michelle Balthazor) and Blakely Hunnings (Noah Vann), Caleb Payne (Sarah), Justine Patel (Gaurav), Bethany Giesel (Austin), and Emma Payne; and great-grandchildren, William Hunnings, Jack and Lucy Vann, Heidi Payne, Satya Patel, and August Giesel. Buddy never met a stranger and was a friend to many. "Well done, good and faithful servant" Matthew 25:21 Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P. M. , Wednesday, September 27, 2023 in Crewe Baptist Church, 400 E. Virginia Ave. , Crewe, VA 23930. Visitation will be from 12 noon until the time of the service. Interment will follow in Wards Chapel UMC Cemetery, 7818 Namozine Road, Crewe, VA 23930. Arrangements are by Joseph McMillian Funeral Homes of Crewe and Blackstone. In lieu of flowers, donations may go to Crewe Baptist Church, Men on Mission program. A special thanks goes to Amedysis Hospice and Dr. Jonathan Marston. www. mcmillianfuneralhome. com.
