Catherine M. (Rourke) Sheehan, 82, of Longmeadow died Saturday, September 9, 2023, peacefully in the comfort of her home. Catherine, a daughter of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Dillon) Rourke was born in Springfield, MA on April 27, 1941. Raised in Springfield and the oldest of five children, she graduated from Cathedral High School and received her associates degree from Bay Path College, Longmeadow, MA where she served as the president of the Newman Club. She was a resident of Longmeadow for most of her life. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband John L. Sheehan, a sister, Christine Fiorentino, and a dear son in law, Thomas Collins. She leaves two sisters; Constance D. Noyes and her husband J C. of Bethlehem, and Alison M. Rourke and her husband Gerald Azzinaro of Boston, a brother, Joseph T. Rourke, Jr. and his loving companion Judith A. Stacy of Monson, a sister-in-law, Shirley Dorsey of East Longmeadow, and four children: Tracy (David) of Springfield, Jennifer of Springfield, John of Enfield and Amy (William) of Falmouth. She also leaves her nine beloved grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Catherine had five great grandchildren, and most recently, was able to welcome a new great granddaughter to our family. Catherine was a resident of Longmeadow for most of her life and her town brought her much joy; especially Storrs Library where she would go to read the New York Times each week, and her wonderful best friends that made up her book club that she was a member of for nineteen years. Catherine worked as a homemaker and dedicated much time to helping others. She delivered meals for Meals on Wheels and helped at the Longmeadow Senior Center providing rides to and from appointments. She spent many hours visiting with people who needed her, whether it was reading to a friend who had lost her sight or caring for her grandchildren where she always had an active role in their lives. Catherine was a friend to many and took this role seriously. She had a standing Tuesday night call with her oldest friend with whom she met in seventh grade. Catherine was extremely generous with her time and her love for those in her life. Catherine was always up for an adventure and enjoyed many trips to Maine and Cape Cod. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing card games where she would habitually have bragging rights as the winner. Catherine had the gift of making us all feel loved and touched by her many kindnesses. Visiting hours for Catherine will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023, from 9:00-10:00 AM at Forastiere Smith Funeral Home 220 N. Main St. East Longmeadow, MA. A funeral mass will follow at 11:00 a. m. at St. Mary's Church, 519 Longmeadow St. Longmeadow MA. Gino Francis Torretti, Jr. passed away peacefully on November 30, 2023, at JGS Lifecare in Longmeadow, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Ludlow on November 19, 1940, to the late Gino and Ida (Almeida) Torretti, and he remained a dedicated lifelong resident of Ludlow. Gino was a man of many talents and passions. As the founder and owner of Jolie Hair and Beauty Academy for over 20 years, he left an indelible mark on the cosmetology industry. His commitment to education extended beyond his own academy, as he also shared his expertise by teaching cosmetology at Springfield Technical Community College. Beyond the world of beauty and style, Gino was adept at working with his hands and found joy in carpentry. A proud member of The Moose Club in Chicopee and Unico, the largest Italian American service organization in the US, Gino valued community and camaraderie. His warm and friendly demeanor made him a cherished presence at the Ludlow Senior Center, where he cultivated lasting friendships over the years. Gino loved cooking, having learned cherished family recipes from his mother and honing his skills during the six years he spent in the Army National Guard. Gino spent cherished summers at his Cape Cod home for over 50 years where he enjoyed fishing and clamming. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 22 years, Michaele (Meunier) Torretti; his children, Kimberly Danio and her husband Peter of Monson and Gregory Torretti and his wife Jen of Greenwich, CT; his brother Dominic Torretti and his wife Deborah of Ludlow; 3 cherished grandchildren, Jenna, Alex, and Jeffrey; his nephews Nicholas and Nathan Torretti of Ludlow, along with other family members and many friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his nephew Dominic Torretti. LONGMEADOW- Ruth M. Marafioti, (92), passed away at home peacefully on November 20th, 2023. She was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 8, 1931 to the late Salvatore and Maria (Minisci) Avato. She graduated from the High School of Commerce in Springfield in 1948, and she worked at Mass. Wholesale Drug Company for many years. She was happily married to Antonio "Tony" Marafioti and cherished 47 years together before his passing on October 29, 2017. Ruth was active in her community and was a dedicated parishioner of the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Springfield. Ruth enjoyed traveling all over Europe and especially ltaly with her late husband Tony. She also enjoyed cooking and canning tomatoes and peppers fresh from the garden. She was known for her outstanding Italian cooking, and made from scratch cookies. ln addition to her parents she was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph, Cosmo, Daniel, and Frank. She leaves her two loving sisters Marie Chaban, and Laura Puppolo. She also leaves several nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Maryanne (Hart) Guimond, 65, of East Longmeadow, MA, passed peacefully November 19, 2023 at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA. Born in Springfield, MA on March 9, 1958, daughter of the late Edward, "Ted", and Gloria (Osborne) Hart, she attended Springfield Schools and graduated from Cathedral High School and Our Lady of the Elms College. Maryanne, like her father Ted, was an avid Notre Dame and New England Patriots football fan. She and her father made the trek out to the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Maryanne loved to spend time with family and friends and cherished her movie outings with her close friend Dale Serra. She also enjoyed gatherings with family for holidays and special occasions especially the Christmas holiday period when she decorated the house in electric candles and lights. Maryanne always looked forward to her summer vacations at Cape Cod with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband and best friend of 42-years, Frank Guimond III of East Longmeadow; her loving son, Frank Guimond IV, and his wife Denise and their sons, Frank V, Jacob, and Liam of Henderson, NV; her loving daughter, Nicole Lemonde and her husband Tim and their son, Ben of West Springfield; her sister, Donna Racette and her husband Roger of East Longmeadow; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her sister, Deborah Benoit and her husband Daniel. A private Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Church with burial at St. Michael's Cemetery. William (Bill) Shrout Lindsay, Jr. , 77, a 33-year resident of Naperville, IL and recently of Longmeadow, MA, passed away on June 14, 2023, surrounded by family. A 32-year cancer survivor, respiratory issues caused by the radiation that saved him eventually claimed his life. Bill was born on February 27, 1946, to Ruby Aleen and William Lindsay, Sr. in Lexington, KY. After graduation from Franklin County High School in 1964, he earned a degree in Industrial Management from the University of Kentucky '68. Bill married Rebecca (Becky) Miller in 1969 and they lived together in Kaiserslautern, Germany while Bill was in the army. During that time, Bill grew his signature mustache as a quiet revolt against authority, which he maintained for the rest of his life. Their family grew, with one child born in Indianapolis, IN and three children born while living in Cheshire, CT. Bill received his MBA in Computer Science from the University of New Haven in 1986. Over his 45-year career, Bill spent 26 working for Ryerson/Inland Steel before moving to AMCOL International and retiring in 2018. Bill was an active participant in MindSplash, Becky's museum exhibit company, crafting and installing exhibits for children's and science museums all over the world. Bill will be remembered for his sense of humor and his deep love of the natural world. He also loved coin collecting, woodworking, genealogy, taking walks with Becky, pun-filled t-shirts, and visits with his grandchildren. Bill valued his time with their Progressive Christianity group at Grace UMC in Naperville, their trips to Europe, weeks on Cape Cod, and any time he could spend in nature. Bill was predeceased by his parents and sister, Maribelle Howard. He is survived by his wife, Becky Lindsay, children, Sarah Bombich (Mike), Mark Lindsay (Alexa), Jenny Crews, and Kate Scher (Elliot), grandchildren, Nate and Julia Bombich, Jamie and Noah Lindsay, and Benjamin, Owen and Johanna Scher, nephews, Jason and Matt Schermerhorn, Blair Miller, Jeff Howard, and niece, Anne Miller Bretana. A celebration of life will be held at a later date (to be announced) where he will be interred on Cape Cod surrounded by the nature he so loved. Annabelle F. Vanderleeden, 92, of Amherst, longtime former resident of Springfield and Longmeadow, passed away on November 20, 2023, at home surrounded by family. She was born on August 17, 1931, in the Bronx, NY, to the late Thomas Michael Flaherty and Mary Louise (Guimond) Flaherty, both Holyoke natives. Annabelle was raised in Florham Park, New Jersey, and attended local schools and graduated from Madison High School in 1950. She went on to obtain a BA in English from Montclair State University in 1954. After graduating, Annabelle traveled the country, spending time in Nevada and Colorado before settling in Springfield. It was there in 1967 that she met her husband Hans, who she was married to for 55 years until his death in 2021. Annabelle spent much of her 34-year career in the Springfield public school system, primarily teaching 5th grade at the Carew Street School, New North, and Brookings Middle School. She cared deeply about her students, their success, and educational equity. Her teaching achieved national recognition and was featured in publications such as Instructor Magazine. She had a particular focus on ESL reading and writing, but also appreciated the importance of the arts, including ceramics and dance, in her curriculum. For many years, she performed square dancing routines with her students on WGBY's Heritage Corner. After her retirement in 1992, she continued learning and teaching, taking numerous trips to museums and historical sites, and judging children's writing competitions, among many other activities. Annabelle was also fortunate to travel abroad, including visits to relatives in Ireland and Holland. Once her grandchildren were born, Annabelle found a new batch of students. She taught them to read and co-authored a published short story with her granddaughter. In addition to being a voracious reader, Annabelle enjoyed trips to Old Sturbridge Village, walks in Forest Park, baking, and spending time with her friends and family. She had a terrific sense of humor and the gift of gab. Her generosity, laughter, and storytelling will be missed. Annabelle leaves her son Kevin of Amherst, daughter-in-law Jennifer, and grandchildren Emma and Max. She is also survived by her sister Sheila Filler of Yellow Springs, Ohio, three stepchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Thomas M. Flaherty. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Beacon Hospice, particularly Pam and Jess, for their dedicated care and compassion in Annabelle's final year. "Armen Tashjian, 101, of East Longmeadow passed away peacefully on Sunday morning of a brief illness of seven short days. Armen was born in Springfield, a son of the late Eghishe \u0026amp; Anna (Surabian) Tashjian, proud Armenian immigrants. He worked briefly for the Springfield Armory before enlisting in the US Army during World War II. After returning home, he met and married Shirley Samay and they enjoyed 57 years of love, happiness and memories. Armen worked as a professional commercial photographer working for Milton Bradley and Hampden Engineering for many years. He was an avid photographer and countless subjects including his garden and kids were his favorite. Armen was proud of his Armenian heritage and was a lifelong communicant of St. Gregory Armenian Apostolic Church in Indian Orchard. He volunteered his time tirelessly for the church in any way he could, playing the organ and piano for many events, helping with church dinners, the Fall festival, cooking alongside his wife Shirley and the annual Christmas party. He loved being around people and always had a smile on his face. Armen's beloved wife, Shirley passed away in 2015 and his dear brother Haig Tashjian in 2022. Armen leaves his sister Nancy (Ted) Sellarole and his longtime neighbors and dear friends Sharon Dandy and his "grandson" Colin Dandy. "Leah Kardos, age 93, of Longmeadow, MA, passed away on November 8, 2023. Leah was born on June 25, 1930, in Kingston, NY, daughter of Tina and Nick Schwartz. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Peter Kardos, and her parents. Leah is survived by her children: Glen Friedman (Cindy), Lynn Friedman, and Mark Friedman (Lynette), as well as her grandchildren: Zinnia Friedman, Peyton Friedman, and Talia Friedman. She was predeceased by her stepbrother, Eugene Schwartz of Nevada, and her ex-husband, Arthur Friedman of Cleveland, OH. Leah was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend to many. Leah\u0027s early years were spent in Kingston, NY and NYC, where she attended Kingston High School. She later pursued higher education at Western Reserve. Leah also had the opportunity to work at various places throughout her career, including Forbes Engineering as an Office Administrator, Rocky\u0027s Ace Hardware Main Office, and even spent a year as an artist at Disney after high school. In addition to her professional endeavors, Leah volunteered her time at SeniorNet, MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association), and ORT. However, her most cherished role was being a stay-at-home mom, dedicating herself to raising her children. Leah had a vibrant personality and a wide range of interests. She lived in Shaker Heights, OH, from 1950 to 1981, where her home became the \u0026quot;go-to\u0026quot; place for her children\u0027s friends to hang out. Leah and Peter eventually moved to Massachusetts in pursuit of new business opportunities. She was an avid reader of mystery books and enjoyed knitting and artwork. Leah also had a passion for animals and adored numerous pets, including cats, dogs, and even backyard birds, squirrels, and raccoons. Crossword puzzles were another favorite pastime of hers. Leah Kardos will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. Her legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will forever be a blessing.
