"Kenny" Carlow, son of John and Christina (Nansen) Carlow was born October 12, 1935, at his parent's farmhouse west of Bloomfield, Nebraska. He attended country school and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1953. Kenny served in the United States Army after graduation and was stationed at Fort Hood Texas before going to Germany. He enjoyed the time he was stationed in Germany and traveling around Europe. On February 29, 1964, Kenny was united in marriage to Arla Hilfiker at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Bloomfield. They were blessed with three daughters, Monica, Malinda "Mindy", and Angela. When he was young, Kenny worked at the Knox County Courthouse and the grocery store in Bloomfield. After his marriage he was employed at the Bloomfield Post Office for over 35 years, first as a postal clerk and later as the postmaster. Kenny's first love was his family. When his daughters were young, the family would take vacations from one coast to the other visiting relatives, hiking and especially fishing. They visited many national parks, Montana, Alaska, and other stops along the way. Kenny played in a bowling league and a softball league, it was a family affair going to the games and tournaments. Sunday drives were common when the kids were growing up. Since his days in the Army when he was stationed in Germany, Kenny had dreamed of visiting Germany with Arla, fortunately they were able to make his dream come true. They were also able to take a train tour from Colorado to California. Later on, Kenny's grandchildren and their events became very important to him as well. He would drop anything for his family and made time to spend with them. Kenny's second love was music, it was his life-long passion. His parents bought him an accordion from a traveling salesman when he was sixteen. He took lessons from Rudy Nielsen and Kenny played the accordion for the rest of his life, up until the past year. The first band he had was called Kenny Carlow and The Sundowners and later it was just the Kenny Carlow Band. At one time there were as many as seven different instruments in the band. Kenny's band played within a hundred-mile radius in northeast Nebraska and southeast South Dakota. He also played for polka church services. Kenny installed his love of music and polka in his children. Fittingly so, he met his wife at a dance. Kenny was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, The Ruritan Club, and served on the Bloomfield City Council. He loved Husker football and usually attended at least one game each year. Kenny loved playing sheephead at card parties, the family cat-especially Max 1, 2, and 3 and now Rusty. He enjoyed doing crosswords from the newspaper as well as watching and feeding neighborhood birds and squirrels. He is survived by his wife, Arla of Bloomfield; his daughters, Monica Vandergriend of Lincoln, Mindy (Bryon) Miller of Elkhorn, and Angela Carlow of Lincoln; grandchildren, Blake (Kristina) Miller, Seth and Drew Vandergriend (their father Larry Vandergriend), Noah and Avary Byers (their father Dan Byers); one great-grandson, Cameron Miller; Arla's siblings, Donna Blaschke, Ruth Harrington, Sherman Hilfiker, and Diana Cain; and many nieces and nephews. Kenny was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Everett Carlow, Clarence Carlow, Arietta Fredrichsen, and Vernon "Duke" Carlow; and brother-in-law, Roger Hilfiker. Memorials directed to the family will be used for the future Kenny Carlow music scholarship and for St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
