Frank A. Smith, 85, of McAllen and Boerne, Texas, passed away on December 4, 2023, surrounded by his family and friends at his home in Boerne. Frank Allen Smith was born on September 6, 1938, in Mercedes, TX to Frank and Olive Smith of Elsa, TX. He graduated from Edcouch - Elsa High School in 1957 where he excelled in football earning the nickname "El Toro" for his fierce running style from the fullback position. He was selected for multiple All District, All South Texas and All State honors over his high school career. In addition, he was very involved in FFA where he won several first-place finishes at the RGV Livestock show as well as serving as President and other officer positions. His fierce football play caught the attention of legendary Southwest Conference Coach, Jess Neely, who offered him a football scholarship to play for Rice University in Houston, TX. The nickname "El Toro" continued to follow him throughout the rest of his college career and later through life. As a Rice Owl he and his teammates won the Southwest Conference Championship in 1957 earning a trip to the Cotton Bowl followed by a trip to the 1961 Sugar Bowl against Ole Miss. Frank subsequently graduated from Rice in 1961. On December 24, 1960, Frank wed his high school sweetheart, Joyce Garrett, of Donna, TX and they returned to Elsa purchasing a Sinclair gas station and Goodyear Tire Business. The couple successfully operated this business for 9 years. In 1966, Frank acquired a Toyota franchise to supplement his gas station business. By 1970, the success of the Toyota business overshadowed that of the gas station prompting him to relocate to McAllen and establish Frank Smith Toyota. Frank was fond of saying that "he sold one car his first year in business but doubled sales every year after that". In following years, Hyundai was added to the business and both franchises won many national and state recognitions for Sales and Service achievements. Frank was a great supporter of his Rice Alma Mater, his local community and served on numerous boards and civic organizations. He paved the way and helped many local student athletes connect with various colleges and universities to pursue their collegiate careers. In 1994 he was inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame. Frank had a passion for country western, gospel country and mariachi music. For hobbies, he loved to water ski, snow ski, fish, and travel, but nothing gave him more joy than watching football and spending time with his family and friends. He was especially fond of his grandchildren and never missed a sporting event. Frank is survived by Joyce Smith, his loving wife of 63 years and his three children Roland Smith (Melissa), DeAnn Murphy (John), and Chase Smith. He leaves behind seven grandchildren Michael Smith (Kelsey), Erin Matej (Wes), Elise Keller (Wyatt), Audrey Smith (Cody Sanchez), Tate Murphy, Cole Murphy, and Theron Smith as well as five great grandchildren along with his only nephew Kenny Troppy (Susan). The family would like to thank his devoted caregivers. Ray Montelongo dedicated himself to Frank's well-being for the past three years. He and Solomon Nfor were not only caregivers but his constant companions and friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, December 11, 2023, at 11 am at Ebensberger Fisher Funeral Home in Boerne, Texas.
