Carolyn Denise Campbell, 50, of 268 Swallow Ct. , Ringgold, VA, passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at Cone Health Wesley Long Hospital, Greensboro, NC. Born January 29, 1973, in Danville, VA, she was the daughter of the late Carroll Pierce and Brenda Griffin, who survives. In addition to her parent, she is survived by one sister, Brandi Griffin and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends at the residence of her aunt, Darlene Zamora, 326 Swallow Ct. , Ringgold, VA 24586 A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 3 PM from Glenn Hill Baptist Church. Gene Ray Hawker, age 87, of Danville, VA passed away Friday, December 1, 2023, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Hawker was born September 16, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, VA to the late Ray Edward Hawker and the late Macie Daniel Hawker. He was happily married to his loving wife, Patsy Jean White Hawker, who survives, of the residence. Mr. Hawker was of the Primitive Baptist faith, and he worked for over 40 years at Disston, Inc. After their closure, he worked an additional 10 years at Dan River Mills, Inc. before his retirement. He is survived, in addition to his wife, by two sons, Micheal Anthony Hawker (Teresa) and Raymond Edward Phelps, both of Danville, two brothers, Neal Hawker of Richmond, VA, and Mark Hawker (Linda), of Danville, and a sister Dale H. Norton (Roy) of Blairs, VA. In addition, he is survived by three grandchildren, Christopher and Jonathan Hawker, and Richard Phelps. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hawker was predeceased by four sisters, Nancy H. Moyer, Hazel H. Moyer, Dianne H. Powers, and Jeanett Compton, as well as a brother Ryland Hawker. A visitation will be held on Sunday, December 3, 2023, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Norris Funeral Services, Mt. Hermon Chapel, Danville, VA. Geneva Corns Ferris, 93, of Danville, VA, went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. Geneva was born May 12, 1930, in Stuart, VA to the late Elijah Corns and the late Elva Lawrence Corns. She was married to the late Jacob Woodson Ferris, Jr. Geneva worked for many years in Dan River Mills, Inc. as a weaver. She was also a loving mother and devoted wife. She is survived by one son, Malcolm Jerome Ferris (Deborah). She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-great grandson. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by great-grandson, Blake Skyler Laughhorn. A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 1:45 p. m. , Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at Norris Funeral Services, West End Chapel, 511 Church Ave. , Danville, VA 24541. Nancy Ritchie Hopkins, age 68 of Danville, VA passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at her residence. Mrs. Hopkins was born August 20, 1955 in Charlotte, NC to the late Betty Allen Richie and the late Boyde Franklin Ritchie. She was married to Rev. Joseph Steven Hopkins. Mrs. Hopkins was a member of Pathway Church, and was devoted in her faith in Jesus Christ. She graduated from Cabarrus Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse. She retired from Moorehead Hospital, working in the OR and post-surgical care units. She will always be remembered as a kindhearted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to all who knew her. In addition to her beloved husband of the residence, she is also survived by three daughters, Shari Miller, Kristie Janik (Cody), and Laura Motley (Jon); four grandchildren, Olivia Miller, Micah Miller, Ryder Motley, and Leighton Motley; three step-grandchildren, Cole Underwood, Sydney Underwood, and Anna Motley; and two brothers, Steven Ritchie (Tammy) and Allen Richie (Angie). The family would like to acknowledge and extend their gratitude to Commonwealth Hospice, and special thanks to Irene Fitzgerald for her loving care of Mrs. Hopkins. Donnie Ray Spencer Sr. , 74, passed away on November 24, 2023. He was born in Danville, VA, on September 25, 1949, to the late Vivian Stutz Stirewalt and the late Aaron "Bill" Spencer. He is survived by his loving wife of many years, Mrs. Rebecca Thompson Spencer. Donnie was a member of Central Boulevard Church of God. He also taught Sunday School at Brookdale Senior Living and taught a Bible class at Bright Leaf Place Assisted Living. He worked for 36 years as a bridge inspector for Norfolk Southern Railroad before his retirement. Donnie also proudly served his country in the U. S. Air Force. In addition to his wife, Donnie is survived by a son; D. J. Spencer and wife Carmen of Danville, VA; a daughter; Janelle Spencer Gammon of Danville, VA; four grandchildren; Kayla Spencer Fisher and husband Craig, Karli Tate Manley and husband Nathan, Sophia Spencer, and Jacob Almashy, and two great-grandchildren; Sadie Mae Manley and Atlas Almashy. In addition to his parents, Donnie was predeceased by a brother; Aaron Bill Spencer Jr. , and a brother-in-law; Butch Thompson. In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Upoleon Williams (Karen) of Roanoke, VA, Sylvester Williams (Simone) of Huntersville, NC and Rodney Williams of Atlanta, GA; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Joyce Martin (Samuel) of Martinsville, VA, Tiny Williams (Ernest Wooding) of Danville, VA and Judy Wilson (Roger, Sr. ) of Myrtle Beach, SC; one brother, David Williams (Maggie) of Cascade, VA and a host of other relatives and friends. Born April 13, 1967 in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late Jack Halstead, Sr. and Judy Thurston, who survives. He was married to Dianne Hairston Halstead, who survives. In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include four daughters, Sheridan Wilson, Donica Ojomo (Olumide) and Keshawna Hairston all of Danville, VA and Monica Tolliver (Rowland) of Richmond, VA; four sons, Justin Halstead of WI, William Davis, Jr. , Deon Hairston (Cue'Bion) and Gregory Hairston, Jr. all of Danville, VA; eighteen grandchildren; two sisters, Karen Halstead of Roanoke, VA and Terry Halstead of IL; one brother, Steve Halstead (Sirena) of MI and a host of other relatives and friends. Mr. James Cook, age 88, of Danville Virginia, went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at his residence. Mr. Cook was born on October 5, 1935 in Danville, Virginia to the late James and Eunice Cook where he lived most of his life. He was a meat cutter and retired from Midtown. James served in the U. S. Army and was a faithful member of Riverview Baptist where he was a trustee as well as a Sunday school teacher. Mr. Cook is survived by his wife, Shirley Cook; son, Brent Cook (Jodi); daughter, Gena Walker (Jamie); step-son, Marcus Vincent (Jayne); sisters, Jane McEwen and Terry Clasby; grandchildren, Jill (Sam), Rachel (Richard), Christopher (Katie), Luke (Kathryn), Joshua, Carrie (Ben), Jamie (Brian), Stevie (Matt), Shana (Craig), Dylan (Brittney), AJ; and 12 great-grandchildren. Born September 21, 1970, Steven Allen Stamps departed this life on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at the Sovah Medical Center in Danville, Virginia. He was the son of Leevoine Law and was known by his family as "Stevie Dee. " Steve attended Danville Public Schools and was employed by Rock-Ola Cafe and Raywood Landscaping. Steve was the team manager for the George Washington High School football and basketball teams for over 40 years. He was dedicated to the team and was at practices and games; rain, sleet, snow or hail. Even as his health began to decline, he remained committed to his beloved G. W. Steve was a member of the Silver Creek Baptist Church. Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents, Reverend Theodore and Catherine Stamps; aunt Kathy Towler; uncle Andre Stamps and cousin Dwayn Towler.
