Madera, CA

Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend - Carol Denise Vayda, 73, 1950-2023 of Madera, CA passed away Thursday, August 10th 2023 in Clovis, CA. Carol was the first born child of the late Alfred Vayda and Irene Vayda (Yeno) born on March 23, 1950 in Bayonne, New Jersey. Her brother, David, joined the family and the four of them called Bayonne home with their extended family surrounding them. She was an alumna of Bayonne High School (Class of 1968), received her bachelor's and master's degrees in English and Spanish from New Jersey City University (Class of 1972), and a second master's degree in Bilingual Crosscultural Education & English Language Development from Fresno Pacific University. Carol was a passionate educator with a career that spanned five decades across the country from Matawan High School in New Jersey, Port Chester High School in New York, Yosemite High School, and finally 30 years of service at Madera & Madera South High Schools in California. She was also a Spanish instructor at Madera Community College. The care and commitment to both her native English and adopted Spanish became a bridge that brought her lifelong friendships, a love for the many Spanish speaking cultures, and a connection to her amazing students. Her students always helped to keep her feeling young and inspired. Carol supported many student organizations over the course of her career. But one truly stood out for her, the Madera Students for Life. Carol was the founding advisor of a passionate group of students, who brought this organization from concept to reality. Though culturally Carol was very proud to be a "Jersey Girl," secretly she was also part Californian - having relocated with her daughter, Rebecca, to the quiet foothill community of Oakhurst in 1987. She had a great love for the beauty of the natural world, especially the Sierra Nevada backdrop that she called home for many years. The rural community reminded her of camping trips of years past which she so enjoyed. An extension of Carol's love of nature was her love for animals, or anything with a "cute furry face. " Dogs held an especially important place in her heart and she fondly referred to herself as a "Dog Mom" to her two beloved chihuahuas Suavecito and Ixy and a "Dog Grandma"to Bug. Though there were many dear pets that came into her home over time. A loving and committed mother to her daughter, Rebecca, Carol could be found in the front row at countless stage performances or cheering from the bleachers for her daughter's soccer matches. Certainly most would recognize Carol at events as she was never seen without her trusty camera around her neck, complete with telephoto lens to capture the action. Carol would also burn the midnight oil with Rebecca helping with assignments to ensure her exacting standards were met before submission - because even her home was a classroom. Having left her family and friends on the east coast, Carol surrounded herself with a wonderful community of friends who became as close as family. Whether a weekly dinner and movie night, a monthly theatre date, concert experience or celebrating a big holiday - there were familiar, loving faces always gathered together. She was also known for her holiday celebrations which transformed her home into an immersive case study of the holiday itself. Carol loved exercising her creativity in outfitting not only herself but her little chihuahuas as well. They were always prominently featured in all of her holiday photo shoots. Carol also had a love language of gifting, and there was always a little something for everyone tucked away in her home, and many "just in case" gifts at the ready for an impromptu white elephant exchange or hostess gift. You could also always go to Carol for an event outfit or costume inspiration as she would be thrilled to welcome you to her many, MANY closets. Among Carol's joys in her retirement was spending time with her daughter and son-in-law at their home in Ventura, CA. She loved getting the chance to visit and explore the Ventura/Santa Barbara area with them - including wineries, historic sites, restaurants, and the calming energy of the ocean. It was truly a highlight for her, which also gave her the opportunity to celebrate holidays in the sunshine, help plan their wedding, and enjoy their first home together. When Carol learned that she would become a grandma, she immediately thanked God for answering her prayers, as this was the gift she had been, sometimes impatiently, waiting for. The welcoming of her grandchild, Antero, to this world was a truly magic moment for her and her family. Carol is survived by her daughter Rebecca Anne Evans-Nadella and her son-in-law Gopi Juhani Nadella, her grandson Antero Arjun Vayda Nadella, her grand step-son Kai Kavin Nadella, and her brother David Thomas Vayda. She was predeceased by her parents Alfred and Irene Vayda. To send a flower arrangement or to plant trees in memory of Carol Denise Vayda, please click here to visit our Sympathy Store.

Ruth Cunha

Ruth Cunha

Age - 91

December 7, 2023

Eleanor "Ruth" Cunha Ruth Cunha 91 died unexpectedly Nov. 28, 2023 surrounded by her children. Born in Fresno to Frank and Germina (Nunes) Santos, she was 9th of 11 children. Ruth graduated from Central High School class of 1950. Following graduation, she began work at Pacific Telephone & Telegraph as a long-distance toll board operator. During this time, she shared a small apartment in downtown Fresno with her older sister Velma. They enjoyed going out to the various Portuguese celebrations, and Ruth loved to dance. She would dance with anyone who came over and asked her, but there was a handsome young man by the name of Al that had caught her attention. They would dance and talk whenever they ran into each other. She gave him her phone number and he began to call and ask her out, but it was always on a Friday, never on Saturday. She suspected that she had a little competition, but they continued to go out and enjoyed each other's company. Then, one week he called to see if she was free on Saturday, and the rest is history. On July 25, 1953 she became Mrs. Alfred Cunha. Together they had 5 children. They were a farming family and started out small growing various seasonal crops and eventually planted walnut trees and then later almond trees. Ruth was a wonderful mother and a great cook. She was always involved in her kids' lives, serving as a room mother, or a chaperone, sometimes a nurse or whatever else was needed. Family was always an important part of her life, and often when the weekend rolled around, the family would pile up in the car and go visit with aunts, uncles and cousins. Her family remained a top priority throughout her life. She and Al were also involved in the community. They belonged to the Cabrillo Club and CPDES Hall and were members of St. Jude church. They spent many hours working on functions to raise money for various charities. They developed many good friendships with fellow club members and neighbors that evolved into traveling and camping friends. They loved to go on trips in their motorhome and had a great time visiting different states and seeing many beautiful places. Another passion they developed a little later in life was filling their yard with beautiful flowers. They would go to the nursery and come home with different flowers and plants loaded in the car, and then try to find someplace to plant them. But they loved to sit on their patio looking at the flowers and watching the hummingbirds zoom back and forth. The only thing that Ruth enjoyed more than being a mother to her kids, was being a grandmother. She was thrilled anytime that the grandkids were over and she would cook with them, play duck duck goose, go for walks in the orchard, swim or pretty much whatever they wanted! And more recently, she got her greatest joy from seeing the great grandchildren. They always made her day whenever they were around, and she couldn't believe how adorable and incredible smart they all were! In addition to her parents Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Cunha; son, Daniel Cunha; son, David Cunha; grandson Dustin Cunha; brother Herman Santos (Dorothy); sister Adeline (Al); brother Frank (Elaine); brother Ed (Olivia); brother Manuel; brother Clarence (Lena); sister Velma; brother-in-law Johnny Ramos; and brother-in-law Jess Negrete. Norma Vaughn

Norma Vaughn

Age - 81

December 7, 2023

Norma Jean Vaughn was born to John and Ruby Edwards on January 19, 1942, in Watonga, Oklahoma. The church was integral to the Edwards family, and like her other nine siblings, Norma was baptized at a young age at Ebenezer Apostolic Church in Madera. As a young lady, Norma enjoyed shadowing her mother in the kitchen. She learned how to cook and bake, which became her signature pastime. Norma attended Pershing Elementary School and Thomas Jefferson Junior High School before graduating from Madera Union High School in 1960. Following graduation, she attended Fresno City College. In 1962, Norma married James Earl Vaughn. To the union were born two children, Ronda Lynell and Terence Earl. Before moving back to Madera, Norma and James lived in several places, including Munchweiler, Germany; Portland, Oregon; and San Jose, California. Norma started her career as a paraprofessional for Madera Unified School District before being hired at Juvenile Hall. The kids there greatly respected "Miss Vaughn" for her sympathetic ear and voice of reason, and many of them credit her with changing their lives. She retired from Juvenile Hall in 2005 after twenty-five years of service. Following her mother's passing in 1992, Norma became the family matriarch. She upheld family traditions by hosting big family dinners at her home to celebrate birthdays and holidays. For each family gathering, Norma baked one of her unique desserts. She was known for her cobblers, 7-up cakes, chocolate chip cookies, apple crisps, and homemade dinner rolls. Norma was frequently the last to sit down and enjoy dinner because she wanted to ensure everyone was cared for and satisfied. She was selfless and genuinely concerned about how others were doing and feeling, which continued until she transitioned. As a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Norma was a natural nurturer and caregiver. Even at a young age, she cared for her younger siblings, and later, when her father and brother needed around-the-clock care, she didn't hesitate to put her needs second to theirs. Norma is preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Winton, Sanford, Willie, and Ruben Edwards; one sister, Loretta Edwards; three nephews, Will Lee Edwards, Arnold Ruben Edwards, Jr. , and Braxton Armstrong; and two nieces, Frances Hopson and Helen Amanda Edwards. She leaves to honor her memory, her husband and children; two sisters, Darlene Crowder of Phoenix, AZ, and Sandra Edwards of Madera; two brothers, Elvin Edwards (Tari) of Madera and Milton Edwards (Teresa) of Elk Grove, CA; five grandchildren, Sheena Vaughn of Fresno, CA; Anthony Logan (Madeline) of Fresno; Terence Vaughn (Bory) of Fresno; Johnathan Vaughn (Ashauni) of Fresno; and Ryan Logan (Shaneia) of Madera; fourteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. We will miss her humor and generosity. To know Norma was to love her. We will greatly miss her.Show more

Joseph Sullivan

Joseph Sullivan

Age - 86

December 1, 2023

ObituaryJoseph Edward Sullivan, 86, of Fresno, California, died November 12th, 2023, in Madera, California while residing at Madera Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was born on September 24th, 1937, to Leo Joseph Sullivan and Mary Isabelle Essex in Chicago, Illinois. Joseph was baptized on October 10th, 1937, by Rev. Edward S. Keough. He married Gwenneth Ann Teevens in Fresno, California on August 24th, 1979, service conducted by their close friends Father Paul Baxter and Father Redmond from Ottawa, Canada. Joe lived and attended grade school in Chicago, Illinois with his father, becoming a devoted Chicago Cub fan. Most summers he travelled by train to live with his mother in Arnprior, Ontario, Canada where he played baseball and met lifelong friends, one being Gwen Briscoe. After serving in the Air Force for 4 years, he resided in Fresno, California and in 1975 purchased his first and only home on North Nantucket Avenue working as a consumer electronics salesman. Four years later he married Gwen who moved from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada to Fresno along with her three children: Perry, Danny, and Cheryl. Shortly after marrying, Joe and Gwen established an Irish merchandise import business, named Sullivan's Irish Imports. This resulted in many trips to Ireland for business, and pleasure. They retired Sullivan's Irish Imports after more than 30 years of service. Church was one of several things Joe was very consistent with in his life, attending Catholic mass each week. He also kept in contact with his Air Force buddies, golfing friends, and old acquaintances from Canada. Joe was often on the phone in the evening catching up on their affairs, current events, or memories of yesteryear. Only his poor hearing and failing health kept him from this pleasantry. Early each evening for years before retiring Joe would take their two dogs, Cready and Clancy, for a drive to Bullard High School where he walked them around the athletic track while watching baseball practice. Inevitably, he would chit-chat with others about sports, the weather, or a political issue of some kind. He was a natural salesman, and his 'gift of gab' was not lost on strangers he came in contact. A fond memory of Joe and his furry friends. Joe is survived by his wife (Gwen Sullivan) and three stepchildren (Perry, Danny, and Cheryl), some family, and friends from the Fresno area, Arnprior, and the Air Force. He was preceded in death by his parents, relatives, and some longtime friends. Joe will be cremated and interred at St. Peters Catholic Cemetery in Fresno, California close to Fresno Chaffee Zoo where Gwen worked for 20 years as a docent. Feel free to post your condolences and any remembrances on the online guestbook.Show more

Joe Gomes

Joe Gomes

Age - 87

November 28, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband and father, Joe C Gomes. Joe was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Born on January 16th, 1936 to Raulino and Victoria Gomes, he was the oldest of four siblings. He was born on the small island of Flores in the Azores. His parents preceded him in death. At the age of 18, Joe joined the Portuguese Army where he made life-long friends. In 1959, he married the love of his life, Maria Esmenia Oliveria. In 1966, he moved with his wife and two small children to Madera, CA, to join his parents and siblings who had moved to Madera (insert X years earlier). Upon coming to Madera, he began working on the same dairy where his father and brothers worked and he had two more children. In 1976, Joe and his family moved in to town, in the home that Maria still lives in. At that time, Joe began working at the current day Mission Bell Winery southwest of town and worked there for 25 years. Upon his retirement, he helped Maria with her cleaning businesses. Outside of work, Joe loved to grow vegetables in his garden in their backyard. He loved to give anyone who stopped by a tour of the garden, which was usually full of corn, garlic, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, blackberries, oranges, and his favorite fava beans. He loved his family and greatly enjoyed when the kids and grandkids stopped by, usually so he could show them the garden. His doors were never locked, and everyone was always welcome in their home. Joe loved to talk to anyone and everyone who would listen, especially, anyone from his beloved homeland, old Portuguese army buddies, neighbors, childhood friends, and anyone that was even remotely Portuguese. He could go on for hours talking about old times, reliving old stories, the 49ers, his vegetables, and his family, usually driving Maria crazy in the process. Joe lived by his famous broken English quote, "Do the best you can, that's it. " Joe leaves behind his beautiful wife of 64 years, Maria Esmenia Gomes, four children Maria Hinkle and her husband Todd of Madera, Joe R Gomes of Madera, Bill Gomes of Madera, Joanne Gomes of Madera, four grandsons Haden Hinkle and his wife Katie of Fresno, Trent Hinkle and Scott Oueletta of Porter Ranch, Colton Gomes of Clovis, Brixton Gomes of Madera, three precious great-granddaughters Kennedy, Raegan, and Dakota Hinkle, his sister Mary Credit of Madera, and brothers John Gomes of Madera and Tony Gomes and his wife Mary of Fresno.Show more
