Jo Ann (Milam) Pickens, 82, of Roane County, WV was called home to be with the Lord unexpectedly, but peacefully, at her home on November 26, 2023; after a wonderful house filled visit with her family for Thanksgiving. She was born on January 25, 1941 to the late Loetta Savannah Fisher Milam Shaffer and Joseph Herman Milam. Jo Ann was a devoted Christian who loved Jesus and her family and was known to all as a kind and gentle soul. She was a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother and aunt. Her love for her family was unmatched. She was a very patient person. To help explain level of patience, Jo Ann was a Kindergarten Teacher for 30 years at Holz Elementary School in Charleston, WV. Her family joked that it took her that long to graduate Kindergarten, but she had a passion for teaching and loved children. She especially enjoyed reading to them. Some of her hobbies throughout the years included cake decorating and gardening, which she was known for her "scatter method" with flower seeds; aka throw them out and hope for the best. She also enjoyed archery, thrift shopping, antiquing, painting, and sewing; in which she was known to be able to sew up an outfit the night before if needed back in her day and her accessories always matched it. Jo Ann mailed out birthday cards like it was her job. She loved football and NASCAR. (Go Dale!) She enjoyed many traveling trips to the beach, Dollywood and Amish Country. Jo Ann was very well known for her delicious cooking skills; whose biscuits will be remembered eternally by all who were lucky enough to have them. She didn't have many recipes as she was very much "a little of this and a pinch of that" kind of gal. We will leave you with one of her go to's:Mawmaw Picken's No Bake Cookies 2 cups of Sugar 1/2 cup Butter1/2 cup Cocoa Powder1/2 Cup Milk1 tsp vanilla 3 cups Old Fashioned Quick Oats Place sugar, cocoa powder, milk and butter in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Boil one minute and remove form hear. Add peanut butter, vanilla and oats and stir until mixed. Drop heaping spoonful dollops onto wax or freezer paper. Wait until cooled and slightly hardened, if you can. Enjoy! In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Ann Milian Garnes; step-father, Harry Shaffer; grandparents, Barcey and Elbie Fisher Harrison and Renee Miller; son, David Henry Pickens; and with two infant children, Anthony Dallas Pickens and Latisha Darlene Pickens. Those left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of almost 65 years, Dallas Wayne Pickens; children, Herman Dewayne Pickens (Carol) and Scott Aaron Pickens (Melissa); grandchildren, Angela Pickens, Melinda Williams (Daniel), Scott Pickens, Dustin Pickens (Alissa), Hannah Cook (Kyle), Bethany Pickens, Noah Pickens, Dallas Pickens and Gracie Pickens; great grandchildren, Scott III, Cameron, Max, Savannah, Madilynn, Lexi, Sophia, Sadie, Skylar, Oliver and Leo; along with a host of other relative, friends, and church family. A memorial service will be at 1 p. m. on Saturday, December 2 at their home church, Peniel Community Church, 4718 Ripley Road, Reedy, WV 25270. In lieu of flowers, here are a few suggestions on how to possibly honor Jo Ann's memory: gift a child a book, volunteer to read children, mail someone a card, donate to a church or children's group of your choice (she loved Saint Jude's), use her "scatter method" to spread flower seeds, help out someone who is a little less fortunate than you, or other acts of spreading general kindness of your choice.
