Age - 78

December 7, 2023

On Monday, November 13, Linda-Louise (Buklad) Schmidthuber passed away at the age of 78. Her departure leaves a void in the countless hearts enriched by her camaraderie, laughter and love. Linda was born in Miami Beach, Florida, and left her home town to live with her Grandma-Bernardo while attending college. After earning her degree in Liberal Arts, she joined the westward migration of the 60's to San Francisco during its heyday and the cultural revolutions. She was well liked in the Bay-Area community, formed many lasting friendships and had the opportunity to meet many famous entertainers during their formative years. Linda spent time working for Levy-Strauss and as an entrepeneur doing interior remodeling and decorating. She later moved to Illinois to raise her two sons and work for a local library. She was a life-long volunteer for animal welfare and the law-enforcement community. Her work with local animal shelters led to the rescue and adoption of over 300 cats & dogs in need. Prior to retiring, she proudly served as an Auxiliary Traffic Officer for the Berwyn Police Department. She also enjoyed her time reading from her extensive library of books. Always industrious, Linda constantly worked on various crafts and projects, creating decorations and clothes for herself and friends, using her prized Singer sewing machine she kept running for over 60 years. An avid music fan, Linda often listened to her extensive collection of Rock and Roll albums from bands old and new alike, including going to Ozzy Osbourn concerts with her sons. She enjoyed many daytrips and travels with her closest friends. Linda will be fondly remembered as a radiant and sharp-witted friend, loving mother and supportive figure to those around her. She had a gift for being able to brighten anyone's day and make them feel like the most important person in the world. She encouraged those around her to think outside the box and stay true to themselves. Prior to her passing, she was working on her autobiography titled "Not Born Bitch, Had to Learn" and the sequel ". . . and now Qualified to Teach". She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Elea Buklad (Bernardo), her brother, John Viano and her ex-husband Jerome. She is survived by her two children, Brett and Andrew Schmidthuber, her neices and her many close friends, including JoAnne Walker, Rhonda Romero, Rodney Hurd, Sheldon Harrison, Kathy Borucki Mastej, Amanda Carelli, Kyle Cronin, Sean Markel, Faruk and Tarik Rahmanovic, Rick and Sandy Toman and many others. In life, she reminded us not to mourn her, but to celebrate her. She is missed by all who knew her with a shared hope that we'll be reunited someday, somehow and somewhere, over the rainbow. "Happy Trails, Until we Meet Again". A memorial visitation and service will be planned for the near future. Please check back for updates.Show more

Marion Mende

Marion Mende

Age - 97

November 22, 2023

Marion Edith Mende , 9 7 years, passed quietly from this world October 23, 2023 of natural causes at home in Riverside, I llinois . The second of six children of George Alfred and Janet Fair (Crawford) Slater, she was born July 28, 1926 , on the family farm south and west of Pickford, Michigan. Marion was a happ y , kind and caring blonde - haired, blue - eyed girl who , alittle shy, was happier in the barn with her beloved father and animals than anywhere else on earth. Her dad passed when she was ten, which put a strain on the young family , yet theypersevered during those difficult years , living through the Great Depression as they did , by working together as a team. They became a tight - knit unit liberally dosed with humor, supportingand encouraging each other , learning and prioritizing early the bonds of family ; very much their legacy. A natural born caregiver, Marion dreamed of becoming a nurse and to that purpose attended Ferris State , but was called home almost immediately when a family health issue arose . She never returned to Ferris , and during those war - torn years , Marion worked at the War Memorial Hospital as a nurse's aide and as a telephone operator for Michigan Bell Telephone in Sault Ste. Marie. It was at a dance in 1946 where she met Francis Paul Mende, who literally swept her off her feet. Paul and Marion married the following year on July 5 th , and over the next six years produced afamily of four girl s . Paul worked for Union Carbide while Marion became a stay - at - home mom. A company transfer took them to the Chicago area in the early 1960's then to New Jersey fromwhich place Paul took an early retirement in the late 1970's . They instill ed strong family values and provided cherished memories filled with wonderful, crazy people and events. In the 1980's she and Paul began a second career in California working for ten years in the computer peripheral industry. An unbeatable team, t hey successfully controlled a multi - million -dollar inventory . After t heir second retirement ten years later, they traveled the country with three little Papillion pups eventually settling down in Brimley, Michigan ; home in the UP onceagain. She spent her life making others comfortable emotionally and physically offering whatever support she could , be it food, shelter , healthcare or more . In this way , Marion became the nurseshe always wanted to be . She was dedicated to her husband and family. In addition to being an accomplished seamstress, she dearly loved music (to listen, sing along or play the guitar a little),chocolate, the sun (though later in life became allergic to it), grew beautiful peonies and roses with a particular fondness for bleeding hearts , White Shoulders cologne, and the big freighters onthe Lakes ( though she swam like a stone ) . Small of stature , Marion's personality was large on grace and gratitude, embodying a quiet, smiling fairy godmother - like spirit who gave freely of her gifts. Marion's hugs are legendary and she meant every one of them , bringing warmth and shared joy to those she bestowed them on. She will be remembered for these alone. When she hug ged you, you knew you'd been blessed. Preceding Marion in death were her parents, her husband of 67 years, and three siblings, sister Jane ( late Edmund) Carr, Jack ( late Evelyn Kennedy) Slater, and Fred ( late Sharon Simmons Smith) Slater . Marion is survived by her twin siblings, Bob (Elaine Mattson) Slater of Pickford and Patsy ( late John) Sullivan of Dearborn, her daughters Jan (Doug) Reed of Riverside, Illinois , Barb (Mick) Jolley of Round Lake, Illinois , Patsy (Tom) Koenig of Riverside, Illinois , and Paula Kaye (late Paul) Rabidoux of Queen Creek, AZ, and the nephew she cherished as a son, Larry (Julie Lacoursier Walsh ) Peterman of Sault Ste. Marie, M ichigan , eleven grandchildren, seventeen great - grandchildren , six great - great grandchild r en, and a treasure - trove of nieces and nephews and their families . Marion will be remembered for all the right reasons. She was anangel on earth and deserving of those wings we assume she's now wearing . She remained kind, her love was great , and it was fierce.
