Dr. James Robert Fillbrandt

Bakersfield, CA

With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to Dr. James Robert Fillbrandt, a cherished husband, father, P-paw, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. Jim, aged 87, departed peacefully at home after bravely facing a prolonged illness, leaving behind a tapestry of rich experiences and enduring connections. Born on June 7, 1936, in Winthrop, Minnesota, Jim was the only child of Elmer and Martha Fillbrandt. His formative years were marked by a passion for baseball, dreaming of pitching in the big leagues for the Minnesota Twins. While attending Minnetonka High School, fate led him to the MHS Drama Club, a perfect fit for his natural comedic timing, which sparked a new passion for the stage that would have a major influence on his life. Jim pursued his academic journey at the University of Minnesota, earning a BA in English and Theater, followed by a Masters in English. He furthered his education with a Ph.D. in School Administration at the University of Texas, Austin. Jim committed to serving his country for eight years in the US Army Reserves, where he rose to the rank of Captain, stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia, and Camp Roberts, California. He met the love of his life, Jeanne while attending the University of Minnesota; they were married on August 9, 1958. Jim and Jeanne made their first of several trips to Bakersfield in 1958 where Jim taught English at South High School. Bakersfield and the Kern High School District always drew them back, where they settled permanently in 1961. During his 40+ years with the Kern High School District, he served as an English teacher at South HS, English Dept Chair at Foothill HS, Vice-Principal at South HS, Director of Research KHSD, Principal at Bakersfield HS, and retired as Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Labor Relations in 2007. A Celebration of Life will be held at Stars Dinner Theatre, 1931 Chester Ave., Bakersfield, California on Sunday, February 18th, 2024 from 12-3pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a tax-deductible donation be made payable to the Kern Community Foundation, 5701 Truxtun Avenue, Suite 110, Bakersfield, CA 93309 or online at www.kernfoundation.org/GIVENOW for deposit into the Dr. James R. Fillbrandt Memorial Scholarship for the Arts benefiting Kern High School District students that have an interest in following a passion for theater arts on their journey into college.
