Carol Friend Purdy Giavara, daughter of George and Delia Friend and formerly of Fairfield and Stratford, died peacefully on October 6, 2023, at the age of 89. Carol was born in Stamford on December 24, 1933, and was raised in Darien. As well as a loving mother and grandmother, Carol was involved in the PTA and various activities at her children's schools over the years. She was also a member of the St. Thomas Ladies Guild and the Gaelic American Club. Along with spending time with her family, Carol enjoyed attending Sunday Mass, shopping, was a fan of the UConn Huskies women's basketball team, and loved playing on her bowling team the "Early Risers". She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Purdy, son Donald Purdy and his wife Kathleen, and her daughter in law, Elaine Purdy, all of Fairfield. She is also survived by her brother James and his wife Marion, of Darien, her sister-in-law Jeannine Friend, of Norwalk and her grandchildren Sara Purdy and her husband Eduardo, Carolyn Purdy, Melissa and Christopher Purdy and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husbands, Edward Melville Purdy and Arthur Giavara. She was also predeceased by her son David Purdy and her sister Geraldine and her brother George. A funeral service celebrating Carol's life will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at 11:00 a. m. at Lesko Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center, with Rev. Victor Martin officiating. Internment services to follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield. Friends may greet the family on Tuesday morning from 10:00 a. m. until the time of services.

Michael Aleksa, 78, of Fairfield, Connecticut, passed away on November 3, 2023. Born in New Haven, CT on August 6th, 1945, Michael was a loving husband to Nancy Aleksa and a devoted father to Hilary Harwell and Jason Aleksa. He was also a cherished grandfather to Tanner Harwell, Mason Harwell, and Evelyn Harwell. Michael is survived by his brother, Eugene Aleksa; and sister, Carolyne Sakonchick. He was preceded in death by his father, John Aleksa and mother, Caroline Aleksa. Michael was a selfless, hard working and thoughtful man, who found great solace and joy in his creative pursuits. Over the years, he played guitar with the Stonehill Trio, took up oil painting and drawing, restored vintage Volkswagens with his son, built beautiful furniture pieces for friends and loved ones, and tried his hand at jewelry making and metal-smithing. After completing his higher education at the University of Connecticut, Michael embarked on a successful career as an Electrical Engineer at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft from 1969 to 1982. Following his time at Pratt & Whitney, he took over the operation of Advance Heat Treating Company, a business he led with dedication and passion until his retirement in 2013. A visitation to honor and remember Michael will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023 from 10:00 - 11:30 a. m. at Larson Funeral Home (Now located in the Lesko Funeral Home Building), 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center. Family and friends are invited to attend and pay their respects. Interment will follow at Beaverdale Memorial Park, 90 Pine Rock Avenue, New Haven. FAIRFIELD, CONN Gregory Michael Ripka, age 51, of Fairfield, CT, passed peacefully on November 23, 2023, after a courageous two-year battle with colon cancer. Greg was born in La Grange, IL, to John and Bernadine Ripka and grew up in Westport, CT. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Kimberly Massa, their daughter Abby, both of his parents, his brother Mark Ripka and his wife Kate, his brother Brett Ripka and his wife Kristen and their two children, Emma and Josephine. Greg was a graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, CT, with a degree in History. Following college, Greg held various roles as a research analyst managing fixed-income portfolios. Most recently at Genworth Financial as a Director of Corporate Credit Research focusing on High-yield bonds and the Energy sector. Greg loved history, music, art, architecture, interior and landscape design and was an avid fly fisherman and voracious reader of history. He will be remembered for his incredible resilience, contagious optimism, outstanding work ethic, intellectual curiosity, and ability to make people laugh. Greg was characterized as protective and loyal by his family and will continue to serve as an inspiration to those who knew him for years to come. Irving Glazer, age 102 of Bridgeport, CT died peacefully November 29, 2023 at The Springs of Watermark, 3030 Park Avenue Bridgeport, CT. Irving was the son of the late Hyman and Anne (Bader) Glazer and was predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Visselle, in July 2023. Irving was a graduate of Harding High School in Bridgeport and graduated from the RCA School in New York City as a television repair specialist. Irving's future career was interrupted by World War II when he was drafted and became a demolitions expert in the amphibious forces storming Utah Beach during the Normandy Invasion, June 6, 1944 forever known as D-Day. As a proud veteran, Irving never spoke of his harrowing experiences in Normandy until the 50th anniversary when he and his fellow WWII veterans were asked to speak to the students of Central, Harding and Bassick High Schools in Bridgeport. It was then that Irving relayed to his family about what he was trained to do and how he was part of what would be called The Greatest Generation. Upon returning from the war, Irving began his career as a television repair specialist and eventually opened his own business on Madison Avenue in Bridgeport. After several years, he had come to realize that he needed a more fulfilling profession, and engineering was in his sights. He began his career at Perkin Elmer, then moved on to Data Products of Wallingford with the goal of obtaining his degree in electrical engineering. While working full time, Irving attended Bridgeport Engineering Institute night school part time for seven years graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering at the age of 54. Irving leaves to cherish his memory his incredible family, his three children, Alfred Glazer (Irene) of Monroe, CT, Cheryl G. Green (Samuel) of Trumbull, CT, and Scott Glazer (Lisa) of Ansonia, CT. His legacy will carry on through his grandchildren Matthew Green (Lindsay) of Trumbull, CT, Jonathan Green (Emily) of Fairfield, CT, Adam Glazer (Perry) of Milford, CT, Leah Taylor (Timothy) of Colorado, and Jeffrey Glazer (fiance, Meilyn Madrigal) of Hamden, CT. Irving is also a great grandfather to twins Ethan and Felix Green of Trumbull, CT, born on his 69th wedding anniversary. He was an amazing Uncle Irving to Howard Glazer (Chrissy) of Tennessee, Robin Burney (Peter) of California, and Victoria Glazer (Michael Visconti) of Oxford, CT and a special "Uncle Irving" to Stephanie Lowenthal (Robert) of Massachusetts and Elka Kessler of New Jersey. Irving was also predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law Charles and Annette Glazer and brother-in-law, Pvt. Alfred Gold, killed in action during World War II. Peter "Pete" Trifiatis, 75, of Fairfield was reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, Carol Janine ("Jan"), on the early morning of November 23, 2023. Pete was born in Fort Riley, Kansas on July 22, 1948 to the late Peter and Nina Trifiatis. He was also predeceased by his identical twin brother, William, and his older sister, Dorothy. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Bissell, her husband Brian, their two children, and his son, Peter Trifiatis, his wife, Jennifer, and their two children. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family members. After completing his Master's degree, Pete had a long and successful career in technology sales for which he won multiple awards. A man of deep, yet quiet faith, Pete was an active member of Fairfield Grace United Methodist Church for many years. At different times throughout his life, Pete could be found coaching his kid's soccer team, leading an Indian Guides meeting, dressing up as Santa for a church function, or teaching a Sunday school class. Pete was also an avid reader of Fantasy and Science Fiction novels. His greatest joy, however, came from his family, especially his grandkids. Janet Clayman died peacefully on Thursday November 23 in Stratford, CT at the age of 92. She is survived by her brother Hy Crandall, her children Tova (Bob Spaulding), Stephanie, and Adam (Caroline Heffron), and her grandchildren Rebecca, Teja and Raven. She was predeceased by her husband, William Clayman. She was born Janet Lee Crandall to Sol and Tillie Crandall of Crisfield, MD. After graduating from the University of Maryland she moved to New York, where she worked as a lab technician while living at the 92nd St Y and taking full advantage of the cultural offerings of Manhattan. There she met William Clayman whom she married in 1955. Following a lifelong passion, Janet taught middle school science in Norwalk, CT for many years. Even in retirement she continued educating by assisting other teachers on their field trips to the beach. She loved being outdoors, and walking to see the birds at a nearby sanctuary was one of her favorite activities. Her curiosity and love of learning were evident in her love of travel, museums, music, and singing. Her husband referred to her as the "Energizer Bunny" because of her boundless energy and enthusiasm. She volunteered with the League of Women Voters, and participated in classes through Learning in Retirement, as well as clubs dedicated to writing, reading, genealogy, and Yiddish language. She always had a new fact or book recommendation to share. A graveside funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at 12:00 pm at Beth El Cemetery 225 Richards Avenue in Norwalk. Raquel Zapata Rivera, age 98, formerly of Fairfield, CT, beloved widow of Luis A. Rivera, Sr. , passed away peacefully at NorthBridge Health Care Center in Bridgeport, CT on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. Born in Ponce, Puerto Ricco on September 16, 1925, the daughter of the late Pedro-Juan and Anna Zapata, she and her husband came to the United States and settled in Fairfield in the early 1950's. Raquel worked at Casco Products Corp. in Bridgeport for forty years before her retirement. A devout Roman Catholic, she was an active parishioner for many years at St. Peter's Church in Bridgeport. Raquel had taken cosmetology courses and loved singing Spanish love songs with her husband. They were married for 69 years at the time of his death in 2012. Raquel is survived by her loving and devoted son, Luis 'Tito' A. Rivera, Jr. and his wife Cynthia Hornyak Rivera of Bridgeport, with whom she resided for the past ten years; four sisters, Alma Batalla of Bridgeport, and Elba, Maria and Edith of Ponce, P. R. ; five beloved grandchildren, Sheelah Buedinger (Bill) of VT; Alexandra Lepore (Chris), Danielle Rivera, Kristen Rivera (Jason) and April Rivera all of CT; six cherished great-grandchildren, Alex, Hanna and Abigale Buedinger, Meghan and Collin Lepore, Neena Spinelli and Harper Bunce; many nieces and nephews; and her devoted caregiver, Gloria Zelaya who provided great care and compassion to Raquel for almost ten years and to whom we are eternally grateful.
