Carlis Jefferson McLeod Age 94 of Palatka, FL died April 24, 2019 after an extended illness at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center in Palatka due to natural causes. Carlis was born in Euchee Valley, Walton County FL December 20, 1924. He graduated from Walton High School in DeFuniak Springs. He was a World War II Veteran of the Army Air corps, serving overseas with the 330th Bomb group, 20th Army Air Corps as a Central Fire Control Gunner on B-29 Super Fortress bombers. His overseas assignment included 21 combat bombing missions to the Japanese Empire. After the war he remained with the military as a reserve officer, completing 20 years of honorable service and retirement with the United States Army Reserve Corps. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia, School of Forestry 'Class of 1951' in Athens, GA. His career in forestry started with the Georgia Forestry Commission in Bainbridge, and later worked with International Paper Company. In 1960, he moved his family to Palatka, FL where he worked for Hudson Pulp and Paper Corp. He was also employed as an Area Accident Prevention Manager for the Georgia-Pacific Company in Augusta and Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout his life he was active in the community, serving with the Boy Scout Program at Trinity United Methodist Church and North East Florida, St. Johns River Chapter. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bainbridge, GA and Palatka, FL where he taught Sunday school classes for several years. He was a member of the Bert Hodge Post of the American Legion, Member of the Society of American Foresters for more than 50 years, and Treasurer of the Veteran Memorial Plaza Committee where he helped construct the fountain in the Veteran Memorial Park on the St. Johns riverfront. In his retirement years he was a member of the Palatka Lions Club, serving as club treasurer. a charter member of the Putnam County Genealogical Society, and Okaloosa-Walton Genealogical Society. He was proud of his Scottish ancestry and published his family history in 2004, tracing his ancestry back to the Isle of Skye. One of his most enjoyable activities in his retirements was getting together for a weekly breakfast meeting with his retired co-workers and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Norman Alexander McLeod and Lena Gainey McLeod; three sisters, one brother Gerald McLeod, one nephew Kenneth McDonald, and one great- grandson Aiden Pitts. Surviving are his beloved wife of 70 years, Edna Taylor McLeod; Sister Mae McLeod McDonald, Daughters Sherrie McLeod Henry (Tom), Suzanne McLeod Seitz; Son Jeffrey Taylor McLeod; Granddaughters Melodee Flanders Pitts (Jody), Jordan McLeod Nazworth (Alan), Ashley Seitz Overstreet(Chad), Taylor Seitz, Elizabeth Seitz, and Alexis Seitz; Grandsons Justin Flanders (Heather), Nicholas McLeod (Amanda); and 11 Great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center, 6400 St. Johns Ave., Palatka, FL 32177. Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 1:00pm - 2:00pm at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka, FL. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Bro. Brad Hall officiating. Private burial service will be held at Euchee Valley Cemetery in Walton County, Florida on Monday, April 29, 2019 at 1:00pm.
