Nancy Sheldon passed away peacefully on December 1, 2023 in East Lansing, Michigan where she resided for most of her life and raised her family. She passed in the presence of her husband (Peter) and her two sons (Peter Jr and Matthew). Nancy was born in Muskegon, Michigan on July 24, 1939. Nancy was instrumental in so many people's lives. Her overwhelming positivity and ability to connect with people in a meaningful way were her greatest gifts. Her influence on adolescents and teenage children shaped many, many lives and her impact was, in so many ways, awe-inspiring. She attended the University of Colorado, the Free University of Berlin, and the University of Michigan where she earned her bachelor's degree, followed by a masters degree from Michigan State University. Nancy also had a major impact on the Lansing community. Just a few of the organizations she helped support, and in some cases lead, were Leslie and Charlotte High Schools (as a guidance counselor), the East Lansing School Board, the Junior League of Lansing, the YWCA, St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Ingham County Bar Auxiliary. Nancy is survived by her husband Peter of 58 years, her sons Peter Jr (Ruthellen) and Matthew (Amy), and her grandchildren Thomas, Jacob, Samuel and Sophie, as well as her sister Betsy (Walter), brother Tom, brother-in-law William (Judy), and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her father Stephen, mother Margaret, brothers James and Steve (Karen), and brother-in-law John. A memorial will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the University Club in East Lansing from 2:00 - 5:00 PM - open to all who would like to celebrate Nancy's life. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all of the Burcham Hills and Careline (hospice) staff for the excellent care and comfort they provided Nancy over the last 16 months. Their unwavering support is something the family very much appreciated. Most of all thanks to those of you who made Nancy's life the incredible tapestry that it was and that we celebrate now. Louis Marie Roger peacefully departed this world at the age of 95 in East Lansing, MI. Born on September 15, 1928, in Pointe-A-Pitre, on the island of Guadeloupe, Louis lived a life filled with love, dedication, and meaningful connections. Louis found his lifelong companion in Grace Roger (Manchester), whom he married on February 4, 1961. Together, they celebrated 50 years of marriage until Grace's passing on October 26, 2011. Louis worked diligently as a repairman for the National Cash Register Co. , leaving a legacy of hard work and commitment. He is survived by his loving children: Judy (Lee) Crabtree, Valerie Roger, and Gabriel Roger. Louis's legacy extends through his grandchildren, Melissa (Faucett) Harte, William Faucett, Josh Roger, and Libby Roger, as well as great-grandchildren Madison and Nevaeh Harte, Bruce Richey, and Finn Dudley. He also leaves behind numerous nephews and nieces. Louis was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Grace, and siblings Michelle (Roger) Azar (10/31/2018) and Jean Roger (September 2017), along with nephew Penny Azar. In honoring Louis's memory, the family suggests memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Association, a cause close to their hearts. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Provision Living at East Lansing for their dedicated care, providing comfort and support during Louis's final year. In the tapestry of life, Louis Marie Roger's thread has woven a story of love, resilience, and family bonds that will forever endure in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Jack Reinhold Piotter, 85, of Haslett Michigan, passed away of natural causes on November 28, 2023. Born on October 27, 1938 in Adrian Michigan, he grew up working on the family farm and later Jack went to work in his parents store, Duke's Market. Jack is survived by his wife, Bonnie Lou Piotter (Sweet), children Jeff Piotter, Denise Swartz (Tim), and Steven (Christine) Piotter. He was the cherished grandfather to Joel Swartz (Megan), Corrine Soave (Jason), Jeffrey Piotter Jr. , Madeleine (Jason) Piotter, Jeanna Piotter, and Reece Piotter. Jack also leaves behind 3 great-grandchildren Laylah and Melody Swartz and Marshall Soave. He is also survived by his sister Patricia Wisney (William) and brother James (Janice) Piotter and sister in law Kathy Piotter as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Jack was preceded in death by his parents Reinhold and Helen and brother David. Jack's educational journey began at St. Mary's grade school, and continued through Adrian Catholic High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He furthered his education at Western Michigan University earning both his bachelor's and master's degrees. He was a member of Delta Chi fraternity. Jack's passion for teaching and coaching led him to a 40+ year career beginning in the Kalamazoo and Portage school districts. In 1969 he made the move to East Lansing where he taught Physical Education, coached freshman baseball, and was the assistant coach of the varsity football team until his retirement in 2003. Through his career Jack had numerous accomplishments, including being part of the coaching staff of 1981 West All Star Football team. In 1986 he was inducted to the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 1991 he was part of the coaching staff leading ELHS football team to the State Championship. Notably, the 1973 ELHS varsity team along with his fellow coaches, achieved an undefeated season, leading to their induction to the Greater Lansing Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. Outside of his career, Jack enjoyed random road trips to discover different attractions or unique and good food. He also enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. Jack was a charter member of the Barton City Hunt Club. In memory of Jack Reinhold Piotter contributions can be made to the Saint Vincent De Paul Society and/or the Michigan Conservation Club. The family would like to extend gratitude to Jack's entire medical team and the staff and friends at Brookdale Meridian. Jack will be remembered as a kind-hearted, humble man who touched the lives of many through his Faith, teaching, coaching, and unwavering dedication to his family. Judith "Judy" Rau, age 84, passed away peacefully at her home in East Lansing, Michigan, with her husband Rich at her side on November 27, 2023. Born on May 17, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, to Thomas and Thelma Gates, Judy's journey through life was marked by love, kindness, and a deep commitment to her family and community. On November 22, 1986, she married the love of her life, Rich Rau, after the two met while working together at Bryant Heating and Cooling in Madison Heights, Michigan. Judy's life took her to various places, including East Lansing and Boyne City, leaving a trail of cherished memories and lasting connections. She was a devoted and longtime member of Martin Luther Chapel and served as the former president of the H. E. L. O. club, embodying the spirit of community and friendship. Judy is survived by her loving husband, Rich Rau, and her children, Steve and Yolanda Kassak and Andy Kassak. She also leaves behind her brother, Howard Gates, and a special friend, Jan Dressel. Judy is preceded in death by her sister, Marilyn Shepheard, and her parents. Judy's family truly gives thanks for the wonderful care she received from the McLaren Hospice Team over the last eight months. A memorial service to honor Judy's life will be held on December 6, 2023, at 1:30 PM at Martin Luther Chapel, 444 Abbot Rd. , East Lansing, MI 48823, with a one-hour visitation from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM prior to the service. Georgia (Baziotis) Valaoras passed away peacefully at Sparrow Hospice on November 27, 2023 at age 85. Georgia was born on March 27, 1938 at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing. Her parents, Nicholas Peter Baziotis and Olympia Demetropoulos, were immigrants from Greece who settled in the Lansing area. Georgia attended Sexton High School and Michigan State University. Georgia was a Sunday School teacher, sang in the church choir and was a member of the GM Juniors choral group. Georgia then married George Thomas Valaoras of Indianapolis on July 5, 1964 in the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Lansing. After their wedding, George and Georgia initially settled in Indianapolis. Over the next 59 years, George and Georgia lived in Warsaw, NY; Rolling Meadows and Inverness, IL; Alpharetta, GA; Chicago, IL; New London and Winston-Salem, NC; and ultimately Bath, MI. For over 30 years, the family maintained a home in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. At each location, with her keen sense of fashion and design, Georgia made each home a classic study in beauty, style and elegance. George's work required considerable international travel and Georgia thoroughly enjoyed accompanying him on these trips. Georgia deeply loved her husband, children and grandchildren. Her loving care and affection also extended to the many dachshunds who were always part of the Valaoras family. She is survived by her husband, George Thomas Valaoras; son, Dr. Thomas G. Valaoras, MD (Mari), Nicholas P. Valaoras (Kay), Libby Kirschner (Josh); six grandchildren, George and Kate Valaoras, Alexandra and Matthew Valaoras, and Charlotte and Caroline Kirschner; and sister, Koula Curtis. She was pre-deceased by her parents and younger sister, Penny Popoff. The family thanks the nurses, attendants and doctors at Sparrow Hospital for their care and attention. On November 23, 2023, Barbara Ann Honhart passed away at her home surrounded by loved ones. She was 81. Barbara was born February 15, 1942, in Anderson, Indiana. Barbara grew up in Hanover, Indiana, and attended the college of College of Wooster in Ohio. At Wooster, she earned a B. A. in psychology, and also met her husband, Fred Honhart. The couple celebrated their 57th anniversary last August. She later earned an M. A. and PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Iowa. Professionally, Barbara taught psychology at both Lansing Community College and Baker College in Owosso and Flint, Michigan. She moved into college administration at Baker, eventually becoming Vice President for Academics for the Baker College system. Among many professional associations, Barbara was involved with North Central Accreditation and was often asked to travel to small colleges to offer advice with program offerings and startups. Barbara was heavily involved in the community and her church. She volunteered with Cub Scouts, the Scheffel Memorial Toy Project and did after-school tutoring, just to name a few. She was a longtime member at People's Church in East Lansing. Barbara was a founding member of the Clarion Bell Choir at the church, and played with them for over three decades. She also taught Sunday School, and later served as an Elder along with other positions at the church. She was a woman of faith and believed in practicing the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Barbara enjoyed reading, traveling, going to shows, watching sports, playing with her grandchildren, and spending time with her pets. She was a huge Michigan State basketball and football fan, and would always treasure the trip she took with her family to Pasadena, California, in 2013 when MSU reached the Rose Bowl and won. One of her favorite places was Pickerel Lake in northern Michigan, where she vacationed annually with her family for much of her adult life. She is survived by her husband, Fred, her sister, Marilyn, her sons, David and Stephen, daughters-in-law Jena and Niki, and her grandchildren, Elizabeth, Abby, Katherine, and Matt. Services will be held at Gorsline Runciman Funeral home in East Lansing, Michigan on Saturday, December 9th at TBD Time.
