Mr. Byrd was a resident of Apalachicola, Florida, moving from Ponce de Leon, Florida in 1966. He was Baptist by faith. He worked in shellfish rehabilitation with the Department of Environmental Protection Agency for twenty-one and a half years before retiring. He enjoyed fishing, watching wildlife, gardening, and growing grape vines. Burl is remembered as always being one of the most kindhearted people you'll ever meet. He loved to make people laugh. One of his favorite pastimes was playing good-spirited practical jokes on his family, friends and co-workers. Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his father and mother; one brother Roger Byrd and two sisters Wynette Hardy and Jerlene Ryan. Mr. Byrd is survived by one brother Daniel Loy Byrd; two sisters Lynette Edwards and Willene Minton; six nephews Audy Webb, Charles Bowden, Delwyn Byrd, Ronnie Hardy, Gary Ryan, Terry Ryan and four nieces Earlene Segree, Doralene Rickards, Gail Parker, Denise Byrd. Burl did not have any biological children of his own, but he was the "other father" to his devoted nephews and nieces who he loved dearly. And they loved and adored their Uncle Burl. From teaching them to drive to taking them fishing or for a swim, he eagerly spent extra time with each of them as often as he could. He was truly a caring and patient mentor to them all.
