Paulina Poncik, age 87, of East Bernard passed away peacefully on February 15, 2024 in a Wharton nursing center. Paulina was born on June 19, 1936 in Bay City, TX to the late Robert and Mary Ruether Talafuse. Paulina was raised in Bay City and attended Bay City High School. She married Frank J Hlavinka, Sr. in 1954. He preceeded her in death on May 20, 1974. She later married Edward Poncik in 1980. He also preceded her in death on September 24, 2016. Paulina worked in banking as a branch manager for many years. She enjoyed baking and sewing.Paulina is survived by her son, Frank Hlavinka, Jr. and wife, Renee of East Bernard; daughters, Barbara Havemann and husband, Charles, and Catherine Adams of Wallis, grandchildren, Cody Haveman and wife, Casie, Justin Haveman and wife, Candi, Sheila Sturdivant and husband, Forrest, Casey Adams and wife, Tamara and Jared Hlavinka, great grandchildren,Peyton Haveman, Emily Haveman,Ryder Haveman, Isabella Havemann, Gabriel Adams, Greyson Adams, Taylor Archer and Reagan Archer, Cody and Colton, along with numerous brothers in law and sisters in laws, nieces, nephews and friends.Paulina was preceded in death by her parents, husband and her siblings: Albert Ruether, Pete Talafuse, Rosie Janssen, Mary Marshall, Louis Talafuse, Albina Jones and infant Charlie Talafuse along with numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 20th, 2024 starting at 9 a.m. with a Mass Celebrated at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard, Tx with Father Charles Ostiwah officiating. The Rite of Committal and Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Mark was born on October 28, 1976 in Wharton, TX to Carmen Longoria and the late Marcus Longoria. Mark graduated from Boling High School in 1995, and then went on to study Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin, where he was also a proud member of the Longhorn Band. After graduating with his Master’s Degree in Fine Arts, he started his first job at Bay City ISD as the High School Assistant Band Director, kickstarting a 24 year career that led him to become the Director of Bands for Bay City ISD. Mark was a devoted educator who truly loved music and sharing that love for music with his students, leaving a long-lasting impact. He loved trips to the casino, Bingo nights, and all the fun times with friends. Mark is survived by his mother, Carmen Longoria, brother and wife, Philip & Chandra Longoria, niece and nephew, Caylee and Carson Longoria, and grandmother, Mamie Silvas, Aunts Rosa Morris and husband, Michael, Gloria Duncan and husband, Mark, Diana Rodriguez and husband, Alex, Isabel Llanes, Minnie Gomez and husband, Richard, Mary Longoria and husband, Henry, Juanita Llanes and Lori Enriquez and husband, Eloy, Uncles Refugio Silvas, Jr., George Silvas, Sr and wife, Sue, Gilbert Silvas and wife, BrendaRudy Lanes and wife, Martha, Chris Llanes and wife, Maria, Michael Llanes, Leroy Longoria, Richard Longoria, and Larry Longoria along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Jerrry Louis LaitkepJerry Laitkep, 77, of Wharton, passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2024 at his residence following a brief illness. Jerry was born on June 5, 1946 in Wharton Texas to the late Willie Jacob and Annie Hlavinka Laitkep.Raised around Wharton, he graduated from Boling High School in 1964. Jerry served our country in the United Statrs Army Reserve for several years. OnSeptember 30, 1967, he married Julia Ann Martin in Wharton. Jerry worked as a heavy equipment operator for several years and also owned and operated Jerry’s Paint Service. He learned to fly at an early age and loved taking out his 1946 Luscomb when he could. He loved going to car shows, listening to 50 and 60’s music and spreading the word as a pastor with Lane City Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward John Laitkep and Wilford Joseph Laitkep. He is survived by the love of his life of almost 56 years, Julia Ann Laitkep, son, Jerry Wayne Laitkep of Wharton, daughters, Lisa R. Martin of Boerne and Dana Jean Laitkep of Galveston, brother Tim Laitkep.Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 6 after 5 pm at the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at 2 pm at Wharton Funeral Home with burial to follow in Evergeen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. She was born on November 18, 1952, in Wharton, Texas to the late Emil and Agnes Hainey Miska. Theresa was raised in Wharton and graduated from Wharton High School with the Class of 1971. She graduated from Sam Houston State University with a degree in Criminal Justice and pursued a career with Child Protective Services for over 25 years. She married Freddie Siska on May 24, 1975 in Wharton. Theresa lived her life according to the teachings of the Catholic Church and the Bible. She lived a life of service not only to God but to her family, friends, and community. Theresa enjoyed teaching CCD, volunteering as an Eucharistic Minister, listening to polka music, and spending time with her family. She also had a love of dogs which was evident in her Pomeranian, Bella, who never left her side. The family would like to thank Rebecca Jimenes and Paula Eldridge for all their love, care, and support. She is survived by her husband, Freddie Siska of Wharton, son, Justin Siska and wife, Heather of Wharton, daughter, Cori Kopecky and husband, Kevin of Needville, brother, Frank Miska and wife, Linda of Sweeny, and her grandchildren, Abigale, Sloane, Hannah, Riley, and Reagan. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 9 am at Holy Family Catholic Church with rosary recited at 9:30 am. The Funeral Mass and Rite of Committal will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Holy Family Catholic Church at 10 am. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. She was born on March 29, 1925 in Hallettsville, TX to the late Joe and Shauna Gomez Pesina. Juanita was raised in the Wharton area. She married Luciano Pena in 1943 in Wharton. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1989. Juanita enjoyed playing Bingo, spoiling her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She loved making tamales and made them until her 97th birthday. Juanita adored watching her Spanish Novellas and sharing stories of her childhood. She always prided herself on being indepandant. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her children, Mary Lucio, Benito Pena and Jesse Pena. She is survived by her children, Alice Pena, Amelia Gonzalez, Lucy Mirales, Lupe Ottino, John Pena, Ernest Pena, Eugene Pena, Roy Pena, 35 grandchildren and 55 great grandchildren. Visitation will be at Wharton Funeral Home, 515 Boling Highway, Wharton, Texas on Friday, January 19 after 5 pm. Rosary will be recited at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Sam Appassi at Holy Family Catholic Church, on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 12pm. Paul Thomas Clements, Sr., passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at his home in Wharton. He was born on July 31, 1939, in Millville New Jersey, to the late Walter and Elizabeth Dilks Clements. Paul was raised in the Millville area and graduated from Millville High School. He married Nellie K. Hannah on April 21, 1961. Paul served honorably in the United States Army. He enjoyed living in the mountains of North Carolina. Paul worked for DuPont chemical for over 30 years as a safety inspector. He enjoyed watching football, doing yardwork, hunting and fishing in his younger days, and his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a spiritual man that loved to discuss the Bible with his minister and members of his family.Paul is survived by his loving wife, Nellie K Clements of Wharton, daughter, Tammy Lynn Clements of Asheboro, North Carolina; sons, Paul Thomas Clements, Jr. and partner, Rick Mason of Ashville, NC and Richard Mark Clements and partner, Arturo Montero of Wharton; grandchildren, Kelly Lynn Probert, Amanda Sue McCain and husband, Aaron and Russell Maness, and great grandchildren, Adeline and Anabelle. Robert Garza, 68, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2024, at a Wharton hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born on July 13, 1955, in Edna, Texas to the late Andrew Garza and Eusebia Garza. Robert was raised in Edna and graduated from Edna High School. He later served our country in the United States Army National Guard. On April 24, 1987, he married Aline Marie Webel in Ganado. Robert worked for Jackson County Electric Service for over 39 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, doing yardwork, watching westerns on TV and spoiling his grandchildren. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sylvia Garza.
