Massena, NY. Dr. Bruce Taylor Smith Jr. (87), of Massena, NY, passed away on October 3, 2023 at the North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his loving family. Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Phillips Memorial Home, 64 Andrews Street Massena, NY. Bruce was born in Syracuse, NY to Dr. Bruce Smith and Elin Macartney Smith on April 13, 1936 and grew up in Fort Covington, NY. He was a member of the class of 1957 at Hamilton College, Clinton, NY. Bruce then attended McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, earning his medical degree in 1960. In 1970, after a decade as a General Practitioner in Massena, Bruce returned to McGill for an ophthalmology residency. From 1973-1997, he had a private ophthalmology practice in Massena. He was a longtime member of Massena Rotary and served the Massena Memorial Hospital as a Board member and as Chief of Staff. Bruce is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Rosalie (nee Kent). They have three devoted children: Catherine Smith, Hamilton, ON, Stephanie (Mark) Luebbers, Princeton, MA, and Andrew (Melissa) Smith, Ithaca, NY. Bruce has the special love of eight grandchildren: Karen and Stephen Gross, Jonas and Max Luebbers, and Mia, Kevin, Scott, and Nathan Smith. He is also survived by his dear brother Dr. Robert (Carolyn) Smith, Massena and was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Douglas Smith. Anchored by the Adirondacks and the St. Lawrence River, Bruce was an avid outdoorsman who loved skiing, hiking, paddling, road cycling, and hunting, always with family and friends. He is a past member of the Massena Yacht Club and the Stillwater Club. Bruce, a lifelong hockey player, was a defenseman on his high school's state championship team. He was also a key member of the Hamilton and McGill teams before playing for years in the Old Timers' league in Massena. In 2002, at age 65, he was a valuable teammate on the gold medal-winning team at the National Senior Olympic Hockey Championship, in Lake Placid, NY. During retirement, he especially enjoyed traveling adventures with Rosalie to St. John, USVI and throughout the United States in their RV. Bruce was a gentleman and a gentle man who cared deeply about his community and his family. He will be remembered for his wisdom, his character, his playful nature with his family, and his smile. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Massena Hospital and the North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their care over the weeks before his passing. Massena, NY. Patrick C. Love age 73 passed away peacefully on Monday November 20, 2023 at Rochester General Hospital. Born in Ogdensburg, NY he was the son of the late Floyd and Mildred (Legault) Love. . We lost Pat unexpectedly, leaving behind an extended family and a life partner of 40 years. Patrick served in the Navy from 1969-1973 during the Vietnam War. He was a jack of all trades; having spent his life doing anything from making cassette tape cases at Michelex to moving furniture at Clopmans Furniture. In the end; the years of hard work made Pat enjoy the simple things in life; he loved the Madrid Park spending time walking his dogs and feeding the birds. To him nothing was better than a good western on TV; or taking a long ride with family to see family. A kind spirit; he helped take care of upwards of 20 stray cats who seemed to gravitate to him for they knew he was there to help. Humble, kind and caring; Pat you are loved and missed by all. Pat is survived by his life partner of 40 years Tracy Rupert of Madrid, two sons; Travis Love of WA and Donald love of WA. He was predeceased by a daughter Kristi Minh Love. He is survived by four brothers, Phillip Love; Edgar and Laura Love; Danny and Phyllis Love of Massena and Tommy and Wanda Love of Massena. Three sisters also survive. THERESA P. HIGGINSMASSENA- Theresa P. Higgins, 95, of 20 Kathleen Street, passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at the Massena Hospital. Theresa was born on October 30, 1928 in Mooers, NY, daughter of the late Richard and Mary Jane (Lucia) LaBier. She was a graduate of Mooers High School where she enjoyed playing basketball, dancing and she sang in her church choir. She married John B. Higgins at St. Ann Parish Catholic Church in Mooers, NY. John predeceased her on December 31, 2009. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. Theresa was a former member of the Elks Lodge in Massena. She was a homemaker and a very active mother, sewing costumes for her children. She loved raising her children and helping with her sister's children as well, doing whatever she could to help with school projects and activities. She always worked hard to throw the big family reunion every Thanksgiving, and she made amazing pies. She was always there to help her neighbors and she was even known to make her own wine years ago. Theresa is survived by her daughter Nancy A. Higgins of Massena; her three grandchildren, Heather (Ray) Merolle and their children Micayla and Caroline; Hayley (Matt) Kairewich and their children Lilly, Abby and Morgan; and Christopher (Melissa) Faubert and their children Hudson and Briar; and her dear friend Kathy Belangier. Besides her parents Richard and Mary Jane, and her husband John, Theresa was also predeceased by a daughter Cheryl J. Higgins Faubert; and sisters Lila (Carl) Rich and Beulah (Earl) Costello. There will be no public calling hours or funeral service. A Graveside service will be held Saint Joseph's Cemetery in Mooers, NY on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 10:00 AM. AKWESASNE - Belson Foster Jones, 73, passed away Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Massena Hospital after a lengthy illness. Belson was born on September 7, 1950 in Syracuse, the son of the late Foster and Pathenia (Gibson) Jones. He grew up in Onondaga where he graduated from Onondaga Central School. Following his graduation, he entered the United States Navy, serving his country as a corpsman until his honorable discharge. On April 8, 1988, he married Roxene Cook in Onondaga. Belson was a self-employed roofer before starting employment with the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, where he was a carpenter and maintenance technician. He had previously worked for the Mohawk Indian Housing Corporation. He was a member of the Akwesasne Death Benefits and enjoyed doing carpentry work, fixing things, and spending time with his grandchildren. Belson is survived by his wife, Roxene; his chosen children, David R. Mitchell of Maniwaki , Quebec and Chance L. (Michelle) Tarbell of Brushton; his grandchildren, Cohen, G, Anna-Marie, and Sundance Mitchell and Chezlynn Tarbell; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Patricia George, Nelson Jones, Sr. , Ronnie Jones, Sr. , Jeffrey Jones, Bruce Jones, Myron Jones, Sr, Blanche Jones, Diane Jones, and Noel Jones. Akwesasne: Selena M. Smoke, 93, of St. Regis Road, passed away on November 21, 2023 at Cornwall Community Hospital with her family by her side. Selena was born December 26, 1929 in Akwesasne, the daughter of the late George and Clara (News) Garrow. She attended St. Regis Mohawk School and later graduated from Massena Highschool in 1947. Selena married Edward Smoke on December 5, 1957 at the Methodist Parsonage. He later predeceased her on December 21, 2008. Selena worked at Warner Brothers as a seamstress, then later was a dedicated Homemaker where she provided for her many children and then later for her grandchildren. Selena loved hosting family gatherings, having all her family in one place until her family outgrew her home. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Akwesasne where she was a former Treasurer and Trustee. Selena was a proud charter member of the Akwesasne Library, which she worked with members from St. Lawrence University and other members of Akwesasne to establish and bring a public library to Akwesasne for future generations to enjoy. Selena also sat on the St. Regis Mohawk School board of education, where she advocated for equal representation on the school board for Mohawk students of Akwesasne, and later assisted in securing college degrees for those who wanted them. Selena is remembered as a mover and shaker for the members of Akwesasne in the 70's. She enjoyed taking her children to their many sporting events as well as gardening, line dancing and cooking. Selena also loved taking her husband Eddie to watch their grandchildren's sporting events, and loved holding and watching all the newest additions to the Smoke Family. Selena is also remembered lovingly for her strong and angelic singing voice, which she used often while singing with the Church choir, and Akwesasne Mohawk Singers as well as while cooking, cleaning, and reading. Selena is survived by her children, Larry (Sherry) Garrow; Terry (Linda) Garrow, Doug (Diane) Smoke, Carolyn (John) Francis; Edward (Rena) Smoke and Barbra (Mike) Smoke-Thompson, all of Akwesasne; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen Smoke; three sisters, Olive Simpson, Rebecca Smith and Angeline King; two brothers, Robert and Webster Garrow. Family and friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home in Massena on Monday, November 27, 2023 from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Funeral Services will take place on Tuesday at 11:00 am at the United Methodist Church in Akwesasne. Burial will follow in the Methodist Cemetery.Show more

DOROTHY A. JARVISMASSENA- Dorothy A. Jarvis, 79, of 17 Fayette Road, unexpectedly passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Dorothy was born on February 3, 1944, in Malone, daughter of the late Donald James and Elsie Margaret (Savage) Peets. She was a graduate of Massena Central School and then married Gene Clarence Jarvis. The marriage ended in divorce. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and worked at Violi's Restaurant as a chef. She also worked at many other establishments as a bartender, where she was known to give many people a safe ride to their destination. She enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening and was very proud of being a men's softball coach. Her grandchildren were her life, and she cherished every moment she had with them and her family. Dorothy is survived by her three children Donald (Sylvia) Jarvis, Darren Jarvis and Nicole Garrow, all of Massena; seven grandchildren Amber, Jesse, Noah, Alex, Alan, Nathan and Dillon; seven great grandchildren Caydence, Mason, Haiden, Bentley, Brock, Margo and Eva. She was anticipating the arrival of an eighth great grandson Markus Beckstead. She is also survived by her five sisters Virginia Martin of Massena, Molly Locey of Cornwall, ON; Mary Langholz of Massena; Sue Dempsey of Massena and Jane Millerschin of Ogdensburg. Besides her parents Donald and Elsie, she was also predeceased by a brother Harry Peets. As per her wishes there will be no public calling hours or funeral services. Bergeron, 69, of 7 Judith Street, peacefully passed away after courageously battling brain cancer, on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at the North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Linda was born on August 29, 1954 in Massena, daughter of the late Joe and Pauline (Rafter) Scvarzkopf. She was a 1972 graduate of Massena Central School. She married Thomas L. Bergeron on March 17, 1973 at the First United Methodist Church in Massena. Thomas predeceased her on February 5, 2007. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and was a volunteer at the Nicandri Nature Center. She was a homemaker who took great pride in raising her family. She also worked as a secretary in the Massena Central School bus garage, as a clerk at Kinney's on North Main Street and at Pearle Vision. Linda is survived by her son Mark (Bridget) Bergeron of Massena; her grandchildren Adyson and Averie; her childhood friend Gail Benson and neighbors Mike and Joan DeRosie. She was predeceased by her parents Joe and Pauline, and her husband Thomas.
