John Thompson, 91 of Tremont Illinois, formerly of Grandview, Missouri passed away November 27, 2023 at the Hopedale Medical Complex in Hopedale Illinois. He was born on August 20, 1932 in Holden Missouri to John Thompson and Matilda Helfrich Thompson. He married his high school sweetheart, Wanda Fern Todd on June 14, 1952 in Grandview. He is survived by one sister, Elsie Jean Pattison of Garden Grove, California and one brother, Thomas Henry Thompson of Joplin, Missouri. Also surviving are his four children John M. Thompson (Janet) of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Steven R. Thompson (Morene) of Tremont, Randal S. Thompson (Lane) of Peyton, Colorado and Melissa A. Honnen of Scottsdale, Arizona along with 28 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren. His parents and his beloved wife Wanda preceded him in death. John graduated from Grandview High School in 1950. He was recruited by the legendary Phog Allen to play basketball at the University of Kansas; the first student athlete in Grandview to receive a Division I scholarship. He played two years at KU and was on the roster of the 1952 National Championship Team. After a career-ending knee injury, he went on to serve both active duty and reserve in the US Army. He and Wanda returned to their hometown of Grandview where they raised their four children. John worked for Hanrahan Asphalt Paving Company for 40 years. A man with remarkable talent, John was an accomplished athlete, avid outdoorsman, wood carver, taxidermist, gifted vocalist, musician, and stage performer. He played trumpet in the Lions Club brass band, and banjo in the bluegrass band, Crystal Road Limited, which opened for Grand Ole Opry star Hank Snow. He recorded his first studio album at age 84. John was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Grandview whose membership rolls included President Harry S. Truman. John sang in the choir and served on the Board of Deacons. Elected to public office, he served two terms on the Grandview City Council. In 2007, John and Wanda moved to Tremont where they quickly became cherished members of Northfield Christian Fellowship and the central Illinois community. Following Wanda's passing in 2015, John lived with Steve and Morene for the past eight years. Above all, John loved Jesus and counted it a privilege to have been adopted into His family and called into His service. His love for and devotion to his family, sense of humor, respect and loving kindness to others were hallmarks of his extraordinary life well-lived. A Celebration of his Life and Legacy will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 10:00 am at Northfield Christian Fellowship in Tremont, 411 West North Street. A graveside service for family and close friends will follow at the Dillon Cemetery.
