Sr Simmons

Sr Simmons

Age - 85

November 26, 2023

Sr. Phyllis Simmons, RSM, a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, died peacefully at The Meadows Skilled Nursing Center in Dallas, PA on Thursday, November 23, 2023. Born in Woodside, NY, Sister Phyllis was the daughter of Dorothy Flood Simmons and Frank J. Simmons. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1956, professed her perpetual vows in 1964, and was faithful to her life in Mercy for 67 years. A graduate of College Misericordia and The University of Scranton, Sr. Phyllis earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Elementary Education. She was a highly respected educator in the Dioceses of Scranton, PA, Rockville Centre, NY and Harrisburg PA. Sister Phyllis was an elementary teacher until 1972 when she was appointed Principal at St. Francis Xavier School in Gettysburg PA. Throughout her years of ministry, Sr. Phyllis was loved by many--but in a special way by the people of Gettysburg where she lived and served for nearly forty years. To those who called her "friend," Sr. Phyllis was the living embodiment of the Sisters of Mercy Founder Catherine McAuley's description of qualities most prized: "a kind word, a gentle compassionate look, and the patient hearing of sorrows. " Sr Phyllis was a kind and gentle soul, whose ebullient spirit made a difference in people's lives. She wore an easy smile that reached her eyes, so you knew the truth of her soul. Until the last few days of her life, she communicated through her eyes even when she was unable to speak. While she was in Gettysburg, Sr. Phyllis discovered her passion and talent for painting and creating icons. One of her first icons, hung in her Office, portrays St. Paul and reads "My Grace is sufficient for you. " Sr. Phyllis embraced these words from 2 Corinthians 12:9 and expressed their meaning in her boundless generosity and hospitality. Many of Sr. Phyllis's icons grace the homes and workspaces of friends and family. They will continue to be vivid reminders of her love and presence. Sister Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, Dorothy and Frank; her brother, Francis; her sisters, Dorothy Kelly and Margaret Simmons; and her dear friend in Mercy, Sr. Juliana Hazuda, RSM. She is survived by her nephews and niece, and many friends among the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Associates and throughout the Gettysburg area. The Sisters of Mercy wish to thank the wonderful staff at The Meadows, who generously cared for Sister Phyllis, and the Hospice of the Sacred Heart staff for making her journey Home as comfortable as possible. The celebration of Sr Phyllis' life will be Tuesday, November 28 beginning at 9:30am with visitation followed with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Mercy Center, Dallas. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton, PA. Memorial contributions in Sister Phyllis' name may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, PO Box 370, Dallas PA. 18612, or the charity of your choice.Show more
